I think at some point in the early planning Kaz asked whether the Menagerie was sending a group, and it was stated that they didn't think so, but that may have been the White Rose, I don't have my book in front of me.

 Shadow Business Discussion
-What was the moment you became absolutely hooked?
Definitely at the Parley meeting. I loved seeing Kaz show how he already knew everything going on behind his back and I love how he bluffed about setting fire to Elise.

-Would you have accepted Van Eck's proposition? What would tempt you to take such a risky job?
I am not sure I would have accepted it. Money is definitely not a motivating factor for me. It would have to involve saving loved ones.

-Is Kaz a sympathetic character?
He comes off as hard and unyielding but just from the way he bought Inej's contract and the way he is with her makes me believe he is sympathetic.

We're loving your answers to our questions for Part One! Feel free to keep answering if you haven't had a chance to respond yet or have something to add.

Are you ready for the next set of questions....

Part Two: Servant & Lever
1) Which member of the crew do you think had the best introduction and why?
2) Which character do you admire/dislike the most? Who do you relate to the most?
3) As more crows are added to the crew, how does it change the crew's dynamic?
4) What's the coolest design aspect of the Ice Court? What do you think is most daunting in trying to breach it?

I think it was the White Rose Kaz was asking about.

SPOILER

By the way, I actually thought that Joost and Anya would appear more when I started the book lol

message 113: by grace (new)

grace (grace3) 1. I thought Inej's introduction was the coolest, the way she handled the parley situation was really great
2. I really admire Inej, how she was taken from her family and then kept as a slave, but learned to become "dangerous" and still has ambition to do something really great with her life. I remember at this point really disliking Matthias, I just thought he was unnecessarily mean and grumpy. I understand why now, but at the time I was not a part of the Matthias fan club. I relate most to Wylan, for the obvious reason that I too would have no idea how to deal with this.
3. I definitely think the (SPOILERS!!!) river underneath the whole thing is the coolest

message 114: by [deleted user] (new)

I think the Kaz had the best introduction because it showed both the good and bad of his character.

My favorite character is Inej because I like how she is able to assess and handle a change so well. I also like her because of the lengths she goes through especially when she [SPOILERS] decided to wear the outfits used by workers for Heleen.

I don't really like Wylan's character and introduction because he seemed like he didn't contribute much to the story and could have been easily replaced by a different thing that can give Kaz leverage over Van Dan.

message 115: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Reads (minxreadsalot) Part 1:

-What was the moment you became absolutely hooked?
After the parley when Kaz had been abducted by Van Eck....had to know where this story was going to go!

-Would you have accepted Van Eck's proposition? What would tempt you to take such a risky job? No, money is not a motivator for me. I would only have done such a thing if a family member hung in the balance. Then it would turn into the movie Taken.

-Is Kaz a sympathetic character?
No, he is broken and layered with agony. I am hoping that he may have some character growth in the next book. I ache for him and want more for him.

Part 2

1) Which member of the crew do you think had the best introduction and why?
For me it is Kaz, no matter how long it has been it is his story that remains freshest in my mind. It is not that often that we are able to truly understand a characters turn from good to broken in the detail we get with Kaz's character.

2) Which character do you admire/dislike the most? Who do you relate to the most?
I admire Inej, dislike Matthias and relate to Nina the most.

3) As more crows are added to the crew, how does it change the crew's dynamic?
It becomes less of a crew and more like a family.

message 116: by Azia (new)

Azia | 2 comments Part 1:

1) What was the moment you became absolutely hooked? Honestly, I was hooked by the first line: "Joost had two problems: the moon and his mustache." Just glorious. But I was absolutely hooked during the parlay scene. It showed just how ruthless Kaz could be.

2) Would you have accepted Van Eck's proposition? What would tempt you to take such a risky job? I'd like to think I would, just so I could go all Ocean's Eleven, but I probably wouldn't. Waaaay too risky.

3) Is Kaz a sympathetic character? Oh definitely. He hides behind his snark and conniving attitude, but inside he's just broken and severely damaged. I can't wait to see how he grows in this book, if he ever does.

Part 2:

1) Which member of the crew do you think had the best introduction and why? Honestly, I'd say it was Kaz. His backstory hasn't really been revealed by Part 2 in contrast to the rest of the characters. We don't know why he wears gloves or why he doesn't like to be touched just yet. The mystery of it all makes his character seem the most interesting.

2) Which character do you admire/dislike the most? Who do you relate to the most? I admire Inej the most. She seems to have a good head on her shoulders. I really dislike Matthias, for obvious reasons. And I relate to Nina the most.

3) As more crows are added to the crew, how does it change the crew's dynamic? They're such a ragtag group of kids with shady pasts and secrets, but I see the relations getting stronger among them. I see that they're becoming slightly closer and I sense a lot of love going around, but no one's gonna say anything about it until later.

message 117: by [deleted user] (new)

Part Two: Servant & Lever
1) Which member of the crew do you think had the best introduction and why?
Wylan because the rest of the crew doesn't understand why Kaz picked him and that he is pretty much worthless and it was fun to see how surprised they were that he is a Van Eck's

2) Which character do you admire/dislike the most? Who do you relate to the most? I admire the most and relate to Nina as she stuck around for Matthias and still wanted to get him out of prison. She seems like she owns up to her mistakes and wants to make them right. I dislike Matthias the most as he just seems to want to get away from them even thinking he will turn them in.

3) As more crows are added to the crew, how does it change the crew's dynamic? It is hard for them to gel at first but as they begin their trip to the ice court and the trials getting started, it seems like they are beginning to relate more to each other.

4) What's the coolest design aspect of the Ice Court? What do you think is most daunting in trying to breach it? I think the white island is the coolest design aspect. Getting out of the prison seems the most daunting and Inej having to climb the incinerator - YIKES!

message 118: by K (new)

K (bookswithk) | 10 comments 1) I think Inej had the best intro. I don't really remember much detail but I do know she was badass. I liked her immediately and thought she was amazing.
2) I admire Nina the most and in the beginning I really hated Matthais. I'd like to say I'm as cool as Nina and Inej but I'm totally Wylan lol.

message 119: by Sam | Queen Hera (new)

Sam | Queen Hera (sammyd15) Part Two: Servant & Lever

1) Which member of the crew do you think had the best introduction and why?

I'm torn between Inej's and Kaz's. Both showed the best qualities of them and how they achieve their goals using it... However, Inej's introduction showed also her fears, given her a more human approach, the thing that she almost didn't get to the second guard in time give her more appeal to me. Plus, she's awesome!

2) Which character do you admire/dislike the most? Who do you relate to the most?

Inej is my favorite character, there is no doubt in that. Like, top ten fav female character ever! She's awesome and so capable by herself! And relate... Kaz. I can be part Wylan too lol.

3) As more crows are added to the crew, how does it change the crew's dynamic?

I think they stop being a small group of teens with strange abilities and they started to become and actual team. It was no easy at the beginning, but they start to get along more and that makes them work better. I even see hints of friendship and more here and there...

4) What's the coolest design aspect of the Ice Court? What do you think is most daunting in trying to breach it?

I think the coolest aspect is the circular way of the Court and how the desing is so tight about security. Looking at the map I like how the White Island looks almost impenetrable and 100% secure. Plus it's so pretty. And the most daunting, of course, climbing 6 stories through an incinerator? That gives me the chills!

message 120: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey (bookgirlforever) | 8 comments 1) Which member of the crew do you think had the best introduction and why?
I think Jesper has the best introduction to show what kind of character he is. He loves fights and gambling and is quite humorous. You tell this all in the first chapter with him.
2) Which character do you admire/dislike the most? Who do you relate to the most?
I admire all the crew, but especially Nina. She is such a strong female character. She is a soldier and a friend. I also love just about everyone else in the crew.
3) As more crows are added to the crew, how does it change the crew's dynamic?
They are becoming closer already, just on the edge of impersonal. I love how they joke around with each other. Especially Jesper and Wylan.
4) What's the coolest design aspect of the Ice Court? What do you think is most daunting in trying to breach it?
I don't think the daunting thing is getting in, it's getting out. (SPOILER) Since I'm rereading I know they barely scrape out of the ice court in the end.

Hope you're ready for Part 3!

Part Three: Heartsick
1) Who do you trust the most and the least of the crew?
2) What are the crows strengths and weaknesses, how does it help or upset their plans?
3) What moment stood out the most in Part 3 and why?

message 122: by K (new)

K (bookswithk) | 10 comments The only ones I really trusted were Jesper and Inej. Kaz always had something up his sleeve and knew something we didn't so... I thought Matthais was gonna turn on them every time I read his chapters. I was looking for clues on how he could be fooling them all into thinking he was with them lol. I thought Wylan was secretly gonna still be on good terms with his father and ruin all their plans. I liked Nina though, it's just that when she started talking about killing Yul Bayour I got worried.

message 123: by Kelsey (new)

Kelsey (bookgirlforever) | 8 comments I trust Inej and Wylan, I distrust Matthias the most, he has some shady thoughts. I think their main strength is how well they work together in a crisis. Their weakness is their distrust in each other. If they were more open with each other a lot of problems would be solved. The moment that stood out most in part 3 was when they found the pyres. The way Nina reacts breaks my heart and the following discussion between her and Matthias is so interesting.

message 124: by [deleted user] (new)

Part Three: Heartsick
1) Who do you trust the most and the least of the crew?
At this point in the book, I still do not trust Matthias as he has so many thoughts about selling out the rest of the crew, but then he has the sweet moments with Nina towards then of this part where he seems like he has a heart. I trust Inej the most at this point as she seems the most genuine and real to those around her.

2) What are the crows strengths and weaknesses, how does it help or upset their plans? They have many strengths in their different abilities and some of them seem very bonded to each other and the mission. Even Wylan seems to be growing on them somewhat. Nina and Matthias are going to be a problem at this point. First it was because they could not get along, but now because they have made a secret deal to make sure Bo Yul Bayer does not get out alive.
3) What moment stood out the most in Part 3 and why?
To me, it was the story of Matthias and Nina. I loved the back story on them and how the truth came out about Nina actually trying to save him and not selling him out. He needed to know the truth.

-What was the moment you became absolutely hooked?
Right through the 2nd Chapter with Inej and Kaz and their relationship. And Kaz insane smart scheme for business.

- Would you have accepted Van Eck's proposition? What would tempt you to take such a risky job?
I sincerely would never accept such a job because I don't think I have any abilities who could be useful in a heist, and THE ONLY REASON I could ever take this kind of job, is if one member of my family actually is the one to be rescued. Then I could almost do anything.

- Is Kaz a sympathetic character?
Well... Sympathetic is not the word I would use to describe him, but I think he certainly deep down have a good heart. Though he is clearly able to do the dirty job to go where he want. And those 2 opposites aspects make him an amazing character to read.

message 127: by Sam | Queen Hera (new)

Sam | Queen Hera (sammyd15) Part Three: Heartsick

1) Who do you trust the most and the least of the crew?

I trust In the most, she's very reliable, and Nina the least, I can't figure out what does she wants and where her loyalties lay, I suppose. And the last chapter just confirmed that.

2) What are the crows strengths and weaknesses, how does it help or upset their plans?

They don't trust in each other capacities, I guess, and also some don't trust others as persons , so with all that unfriendliness around the plans can suffer a little. But they complement each other, even if they are to stubborn to notice.

3) What moment stood out the most in Part 3 and why?

For me it was the pyre and Inej and Kaz conversation (Kanej!). Nina and Matthias conversation was interesting too, but not so much for me.

message 128: by Mission Control (new)

Mission Control 1.) I trust Inej wholeheartedly. She's a very observant character, with a lot of very interesting thoughts and things she picks up from others, as well as deadly skill with a blade. She could very easily betray everyone if she wanted, but her loyalty to the team and especially to Kaz is unquestionable. Matthias is the one I trusted the least on my first read, and that hasn't changed during this re-read. He's a very volatile character, willing to help at one point and then ready to throw his teammates overboard (so to speak) the next.

2.) They're still just starting to figure out each others' skills and what works (and doesn't work) for them as a team. Trust is a big issue here. With Matthias and newcomer Wylan, as well as the stress and expectation over their mission, they're all walking very lightly around each other.

3.) I liked finding out more of the history between Matthias and Nina on my first read, but this time what stood out more to me was Jesper's first chapter (he's a very fun character), and also Kaz's conflicting feelings towards Inej.

2) We learn quite a bit of Kaz’s backstory. . . . Has it changed your opinion of him?
-Kaz's backstory explains why he is so cutthroat. We already loved him, but the backstory makes him more sympathetic. Do you agree?

émilie | 5 comments Part 2:
- Which member of the crew do you think had the best introduction?
I would say Kaz, right though the firsts chapters you can see that this character is the leader and that he have secrets you want to know about. But I think that Matthias had a great introduction too, we thought that he and Nina were in good terms but as they meet you know that their relationship are WAY more complicated than that!

- Which character do you admire/dislike the most? Who do you relate the most?
It's what's insane about this book, I LOVE EVERYONE OF THIS CREW. ❤❤❤❤❤❤ But outside of the crew I'll of course say Pekka Rollins for what he did to young Kaz.

message 138: by émilie (last edited Sep 20, 2016 01:18PM) (new)

émilie | 5 comments And I relate the most with Inzj, she is the one who is the coolest (well was) to her family. And she is a fierce of the nature, she like to surpass herself.

- As more crows are added to the crew, how does it change the crew's dynamic?
The first is Matthias, and it changes things at this moment, one because he is like the outsider of this crew at this moment, he is not one to be trusted. And as for Wylan, even if is not dangerous as Matthias can be, the fact that he is a son's merchant make him a privileged compare to them all.
This 2 additions change some relationship, and create others, and it creates new questions, new secrets.

- What's the coolest design aspect in the Ice Court? What do you think is most daunting in trying to breach it?
The coolest design is the White Island with the Glass Bridge.
To breach through the Ice Court is already insane with the walls and the 2 or 3 checkpoint, but I think the most daunting is GETTING OUT!!!

message 139: by émilie (new)

émilie | 5 comments Part 3:
- Who do you trust the most and the least of the crew?
Great question! I think the one I trust the much is Inej and Kaz but for two differents reasons. Inej because she seems to be strong and she can fight, she is honest, and well I would definitely trust her with my life. Kaz, it is different. I know he hide stuff, but in a way he do it all as a part of a plan, he have tricks, and kind of always of solutions to get out of his problems.
The one I trust the least is Matthias, he always seems to be between two states, and we never know which one he is more in!!!

- What the crows strengths and weaknesses, how does it help or upset their plans?
Kaz weakness is his phobia, and his blindness for vengeance.
Nina and Matthias are each other weaknesses, plus Nina her need to protect Grisha and Matthias his attachment to the traditions of Fjerda. Jesper is his gambling addiction. Wylan is his lack of experience as a thieve or soldier. Inej her fear to return in the Menagerie.
Kaz strenght is his trick, and his will to do what's need to be done. Inej her ability to fight and climb. Jesper his ability with guns and his other one... (but he/we don't know it at this point). Wylan his skills to drawing, and calculations. Nina her grisha abilities as heartrender and a bit of healer. Matthias his strength and his knowledge of the Ice Court.
So the knowledge of Matthias could be both helping their plans and upsetting them. Kaz's weaknesses are more problematic for the crew because he doesn't really recognize them. As for the other, their weaknesses make them fight even more.

- What moment stood out the most in Part 3 and why?
The past of Nina & Matthias and the past of Kaz. We learn how and why Nina & Matthias are in the same time drawing to and fighting each other. We also learn what happen to the brother of Kaz, Jordie, and his reason of wanting vengeance against Pekka Rollins.

Yes, I love the character building and also how you can see they start to trust each other and become friends. I love the relationship between Kaz and Inej especially.

Part Four: The Trick to Falling

1) What did you think Kaz was up to at the end of Part 4 with Pekka Rollins?

Make him remember who he was and then kill him? I'm not sure what he did exactly, but I'm 100% sure he wanted to make him remember and care about everything that happened.

2) We learn quite a bit of Kaz’s backstory, what did it reveal about the person he is? Has it changed your opinion of him?

I love how his backstory revealed how his phobia begun, something extremelly personal. It gave him a more human side. My opinion didn't change a lot, I already liked him in the begining and I just knew there was more under his skin than that badass attitude.

message 141: by Moms POV (new)

Moms POV (momspov) | 3 comments 1) What did you think Kaz was up to at the end of Part 4 with Pekka Rollins?
- I also assumed that Kaz was getting such much deserved payback...but it would not be the way he hoped and dreamed it would be. Kat would have to rush the revenge and that does not seem like Kaz's style for a hatred that is almost a lifetime in the making. Needless to say i was taken back by what is alluded to be a quick but brutal death of PR.

2) We learn quite a bit of Kaz’s backstory. . ..."
His back story makes you hurt for the little boy that he should of been and angry at the world for the man that they created. Of course I say that wth all the love that I have for Kaz. He is that thoughtful, creative (in an underhanded way) thinking, brooding man that we all love . Though if the heroes of the book were the other side, we would hate because he does so many underhanded things for his own end...or so you are lead to believe.

With further explanations of his life, you understand his phobias and fears which only make him more endearing to the reader as they sympathize with him. As I loved him from the beginning with his cunning planning and skills, it did not change my opinion of him. It only made we want better things for the little boy living inside of him.

It won't be long before we start on Crooked Kingdom, eeeep!

Until then, let's discuss Part 5:

Part Five: The Ice Does Not Forgive
1)Ketterdam or the Ice Court?
2)What's been the biggest nail-biter moment so far?
3)A lot of things go wrong, foiling the crew's clever plans. What shift in their plan(s) did they handle the best/the worst?

message 143: by [deleted user] (new)

I love all the character building /relationship building. I think it only enhances the action sequences because it makes you understand why a character may do something.

Part Four: The Trick to Falling
1) What did you think Kaz was up to at the end of Part 4 with Pekka Rollins? I believe he wants revenge on Rollins for what he did to his brother. He wants to enact the revenge himself. He doesn't want it to come from someone else.

2) We learn quite a bit of Kaz’s backstory, what did it reveal about the person he is? Has it changed your opinion of him?  It revealed a lot about the person he is now versus the person he was then. He was optimistic and full of hope back then and now all he sees is the steps he needs to take to avenge his brother's death. You also see why he had such a hard time with any human touch. Imagine having to go through what he did at such a young age! It definitely makes you feel sympathetic towards him and to understand why he is the way he is.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this re-reading so far! There is so much I forgot and I love it as much as the first time.

Moms POV (momspov) | 3 comments Part Five: The Ice Does Not Forgive
1)Ketterdam or the Ice Court?
The beauty mixed with the high level of danger makes the Ice Court exhilarating, but there is a comfort to Ketterdam that you would never find in the Ice Court. It is more homey even with all the backstabbing, clawing your way to something in a town that makes its money on the more dirty parts of life, kind of way.

2)What's been the biggest nail-biter moment so far?
Kat in the water...I had many moments of wondering if he was going to come out of that sane or at all.

3)A lot of things go wrong, foiling the crew's clever plans. What shift in their plan(s) did they handle the best/the worst?
Oh there are so anythings that I loved - using the tank, swinging from tapestries, braking out glass that was supposedly unbreakable, gambling with Matthias' love and who he loves more..But the best and the worst was ruled into one with Nina taking the drug - she was incredible and the continue effort that it brings but knowing how it will ultimately effect her without a cure...not the best side effect of an incredible get away.

Part Five: The Ice Does Not Forgive
1)Ketterdam or the Ice Court?
The Ice Court is really cool, how it is put together and there is plenty if excitement and danger but you always have to be on alert. I would prefer Ketterdam as that is home and even though there is danger also, it is familiar.

2)What's been the biggest nail-biter moment so far?
For me, it was when Inej was trying to climb the incinerator and her shoes were melting into her feet and she couldn't grip with her hands and she was giving up and then it started raining and she was able to keep going.

3)A lot of things go wrong, foiling the crew's clever plans. What shift in their plan(s) did they handle the best/the worst? Kaz started all the mishaps with his taking time to see Rollins. It made the whole timing go somewhat awry. I personally loved how they got out at the end. Kaz figuring out about the root system of the Ash tree and the canal being beneath it was brilliant.

We've come to end of Six of Crows (noooooo)! It's been such a joy re-reading Six of Crows with you all and we can't wait to start reading Crooked Kingdom with you next week! It's gonna be sooooo goooood :)

Now let's talk about that crazy ending of Six of Crows!

Part Six: Proper Thieves
1) What was the craziest part of their break-out of the Ice Court?
2) OMG, that cliffhanger ending! What were your thoughts/feelings?
3) What did you think about Jesper’s betrayal?
4) What did you think of Kaz’s deal with Pekka Rollins?

Part Six: Proper Thieves
1) What was the craziest part of their break-out of the Ice Court? Boy that is a tough one! I loved how they went down into the hole where the tree roots were but the tank was pretty awesome too!

2) OMG, that cliffhanger ending! What were your thoughts/feelings? CRAZY!! It makes me really glad Crooked Kingdom comes out next week!

3) What did you think about Jesper’s betrayal? It was surprising. I didn't figure him to do that but at the same time, he owes so much to so many people and addictions make you do things you never thought possible.

4) What did you think of Kaz’s deal with Pekka Rollins? Sketchy - I still don't think Rollins is too be trusted but Kaz always seems to be two steps ahead of everyone.

CAN'T WAIT FOR CROOKED KINGDOM!!!

Sam | Queen Hera (sammyd15) Part Five: The Ice Does Not Forgive

1)Ketterdam or the Ice Court?

Even when Ketterdam is full of dangers I'd choose it before the Ice Court. The IC is beatiful but steril and cruel, if we count what horrors they have hidden there. Ketterdam is familiar and in there the crew has a reputation. I loved Djerholm though.

2)What's been the biggest nail-biter moment so far?

I'm torn between the climb through the incinerator and the moment when Inej and Nina had to pass as girls of the Menagerie and Inej got caught. I read those chapters so fast, I didn't stop at all.

3)A lot of things go wrong, foiling the crew's clever plans. What shift in their plan(s) did they handle the best/the worst?

I'm goint to start this by saying that I love Kaz and all his plans. He's my favorite character because he always has a plan or a solution, and the way he give every member of his crew small pieces of the big picture is awesome. I love it the tree part (you know what I'm talking about lol) and the tank part! I think they manage those twist pretty well.
