I read this book in 1992 or 1993. It is set in a dystopian society although the time (future or past) is unclear. The world is very polluted but it is rumored that either Idaho or Kansas is still clean. There's a teenaged boy trying to travel there and he is soon joined by a teenaged girl. A couple things I clearly remember are: Them finding a young girl who only has one eye & she is sort of mute, she doesn't talk but she does sing, they take her with them. They meet a lady who's rich and has a barge and she invites them to travel with her. She has lots of food but some of it has maggots on it but she still eats it. At some point robbers jump on board and try to steal the rings from her fingers, but they won't come off because she's overweight so they cut her fingers off. At the end the boy seperates from the girls for some reason and continues trying to get to Idaho or Kansas. I can't remember anything about the title and I think the cover was pretty plain.
