I have had some people ask me about my use of the word ´thingy´in a regency novella. I hope people do not find it incongruous. The word originated in the 18th century, along with the similar, ´thingamajig´and ´thingamabob´. It is (and was) used to denote something one doesn´t know the name of. (Garner´s Modern English Usage by Bryan Garner).
