I read this book recently. It was one of the worst books I have ever read. It was poorly written with no structure. To me it was just a string of endless ramblings of a depressed teenager Holden who just hates life and people. I mean he literally hates everyone he meets in the book.

I understand the meaning of the book: That people shouldn't lose their innocence over time. But Salinger fails to make this point through his character Holden since he is arrogant and dumb and is really much worse than all those fake people he encounters in the book

It was so bad I actually didn't feel like finishing it.

The point of the novel is not that people shouldn't lose their innocence, it's about how everyone eventually will. Holden is whining, annoying, and unlikable because he refuses to grow up, choosing to distract himself with childish games to avoid to topic all together. In fact, it causes him to have mental problems, hence the rambling and inconsistent narration style; there are two Holdens, the one telling the story in the present and the one who experienced it in the past. The story is simplistic on the outside but actually has many layers that need deep thought to find and understand. I didn't like it when I first read it either but once I started to deconstruct what Sallinger was trying to say I find yourself wanting to read it again.
