The movie Heavenly Creatures is based on the crime

THAT said - I had the best time in Atlanta on a Walking Dead Tour with the actor who played T-Dog as part of our group

I used to have a bit of fear for clowns...now, I loathe them..

message 106: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 18818 comments I finally buckled down and started researching the killer-clown epidemic. Apparently, in the USA there has been only a single arrest of a maniac in a clown suit (in KY). In the UK, interestingly, I found half a dozen.

If the LAPD is busy as little bees because of a crime spike, they might not have anyone free to do the reporting. That's a defect in the UCR. If it were all downloaded automatically the reports would be more accurate.

I have a friend who works in law enforcement in South Carolina. I've been bugging him for details. If I get some, I'll share with you guys. I cannot share stuff that could jeopardize the case, but little tid-bits are fair game!

Chained for months in a Konex container and abused at will by a serial killer. Yeah, I can't imagine what she's been thinking and how she felt when she was rescued. So happy she survived, but I can't imagine she will ever be the same or how she was before she was abducted...

VERY unlikely she will ever be the same. But it should do her a world of good to denounce him in open court.

Shelley | 1225 comments That's the second close call I have heard about lately. There's that case in Ohio where the victim called 911 whispering because her abductor was sleeping! They found dead bodies at the site, etc. Shawn Grate is a serial killer and she was rescued. It gave me the chills hearing her 911 call.

Fishface | 18818 comments Here's a heartening statistic I learned at a recent training. When I was a social-work intern in the early 1990s, a police study showed that 1 out of 4 females experienced sexual violence before the age of 18. (They couldn't get good figures for males because they report it even more rarely than females do.)

Well, sir, the figure is now -- due to better child protection measures across the board -- only 1 in 10, and that includes both males and females.

Yay! That's awesome. Huge difference.

message 121: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 18818 comments The key change was not warning children away from "strangers." The new rule is to never let anyone ever be alone with your child -- even another child, because plenty of those are dangerous to their peers.

message 122: by Shelley (last edited Nov 07, 2016 01:16PM) (new)

Shelley | 1225 comments Sad but necessary. The pre-school/day care my grandsons go to have cameras and my daughter and son-in-law can see them whenever they want. I can't ... just the parents can and it's a secured access, etc. It's tight security to get into the building. I have to show my picture ID if I come to pick them up and only after they have had notification from the parents beforehand and confirmed it can I even get in the building much less leave with the kids. I like it that way.

I don't do it very often. Once or twice a year maybe. We don't live close to them. The staff watch the grandsons' reaction to me as a final check.

Really? All the homemade beer I have tasted, I didn't like. BUT it does sound like fun to try. We have a local micro-brewery. I might make a beer run before tonight so I can feel a part of the "in crowd". :)

MAybe the homebrewer didn't follow the directions precisely? Or maybe the beer got infected. Being clean and sanitary is absolutely crucial for a finished product that tastes good. I've done stouts, IPA, double-IPA, a light ale, and I just bottled some holiday wheat beer...It's fun

I barely have enough room to boil water for pasta much less brew beer! I did help a friend brew brown ale once. I much prefer just going to get craft beer at Noble Grains and such.

i'm a huge craft beer fan too. I just squeeze enough room out to make the beer before my wife gives me the "stink eye."

NYC has several breweries and in New York you can get a growler filled any place that fills growlers. It's quite nice, good fresh beer without having to make it yourself, it's the city girl way! #bellezastyle

I am allergic to Hops so I get stuffy and sneezy when I have beer so despite liking the taste, I rarely indulge. So I prefer wine

message 142: by Fishface (last edited Nov 08, 2016 11:52AM) (new)

Fishface | 18818 comments Oh, homemade beer is usually disgusting. I had a dorm-mate who used the communal kitchen to brew up these nightmarish concoctions that made the whole building smell like sweatsocks stuffed with rotten oranges. But Violin Monster -- the only beerlike substance I've ever liked -- is made by a microbrewery in Ann Arbor. Not cheap, either.

message 143: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 18818 comments Well, this is kind of infuriating. I'm now reading Only In New England The Story of A Gaslight Crime and could not figure out what TC story it is based on -- a rich lady in an obscure, inbred New England town is murdered, and her son, a senator, falls under suspicion. I thought, what a great test for Borowitz's Blood and Ink: An International Guide to Fact-Based Crime Literature, and what did I find in the index? Nothing. What am I finding online? Two things: jack and squat. And Jack left town.

message 144: by K.A. (new)

K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) | 1297 comments Are you sure it's really based on a TC or, maybe it just kind of got an idea from a TC somewhere? Books tend to play fast and loose with their claims to fact...

I can't be sure, of course. And not knowing what details he might have changed if it is a true case makes it hard to look up. Did he change the year? He certainly changed the names of people and places. I assume it really did happen in New England because of the title of the book and the rich character of the place where he does his investigation. But that doesn't narrow it down much. There must be a grillion and one disused hotels in out-of-the-way coastal villages in New England. And he may have changed an old farmhouse into a hotel, or who knows what. The author may have changed around the sexes, for that matter. An island may have been made into a peninsula. Who knows?

I wonder how that would compare to Arbor Brewing Company's Mackinac Fudge flavor. Which I haven't tried.

message 147: by K.A. (new)

K.A. Krisko (kakrisko) | 1297 comments Hmm. Haven't tried that either. Must take a look at the local booze joint.

message 148: by Fishface (new)

Fishface | 18818 comments I think they only sell it during the Mackinac Island open season; it disappeared out of the stores her just as the Violin Monster, sold only 3 mos a year thru the end of October, was appearing.
