need help finding an old textbook from AP american history

im looking for a book we used in AP american history from '97 or '98 for essays. each week you had to write a paper on an article. it was a narrative history type book. chrono order. there was one piece by bart de las casas. john smith and i think but not sure , one from ben franklin about how he tried his hardest to be completely virtuous. if i remember correctly it was a small to medium sized book. perhaps black was on the cover and back with an old map on the cover. thin paper. maybe 200-300 pages. greatly appreciate any help. thanks
