I have to say like I thought he was in my head for chunks of it so I don't mind paraphrasing. If you look at it from a scientific point of view, it's recognizing that for hundreds of years people thought illness stemmed from imbalance and bad blood in the body. We would now say this is wrong. But who's to say that hundreds of years from now, our views on medicine will be perceived as equally ridiculous? From this question and generally considering our lives and culture in the context of the future, he considers what will and should last and what form it may be in. Since it's Chuck Klosterman, he looks at many areas of pop culture, including rock, television, football, etc. and also pulls in science and some less popular series. I agreed with his central thesis and some of the variations but others were silly or I just didn't care. As always, I appreciate that he can write it far more beautifully than I can express myself. I did think a couple of thoughts were very obvious (but again he's in my head), some I didn't much care about, and my main complaint was the ending. It got summed up in a paragraph at the end of the chapter. I was very, huh, it's over. Like that? I still like I Wear the Black Hat the best.
