I think finding an actor to play Will would be very hard because you'd need to find someone who can play a character who is mischievous, loving and distant all at the same time.

personally I would not like any adaptation of TID
It's really hard to find the right actor that can bring the amount of depth and layers that each character has in the Infernal Devices
I don't really have any... They already semi-ruined the TMI trying to make it into a TV show, I hope they leave TID alone.
Overall I agree, it would be better left alone.
I honestly don't like the idea because I like shadowhunters but I think the infernal devices is too special and I can't see a movie or a show about this series. But I've always imagined Tessa as Nina dobrev
Sorry Nina dobrev as Tessa. When she played Katherine she was amazing!
I think that Willa Holland would also be an awesome Tessa: 
Willa is what I physically imagined Tessa to be like -- she embodies Tessa's prominent features: grey eyes, brown hair, warmth, strength, passion, and love. However, I find an actor's acting ability to be more important than how closely they psychically appear to resemble the character they are acting. I don't know enough about Willa's acting, but I agree with Laura that Nina Dobrev would be excellent at playing Tessa, however, I feel as though she is trying to take up different roles after quitting from The Vampire Diaries. Regardless, I hope that whatever happens, if a TID adaptation actually does happen in the future, that they will nail it and that the casting will be really good.
I like Willa!. Also I said Nina Dobrev because I saw her on the vampire diaries and I think she's a really good actress and she could play Tessa really well
I kind of pictured Tessa to look like Emma Watson a little bit to be honest!
I love that Willa idea SO much! And personally, Dylan O'Brian will be my Will, we all know he can be mischievous and sensitive from him being Stiles in Teen Wolf. Jem will be more difficult.TMI, I love Jamie Bowell as Jace in the movie, Harry Shum Jr is great as Magnus in the tv series, I liked Kevin Zegers as Alec in the movie and also Matthew Daddario in the series, Alberto Rosende was a better Simon for me and also Emeraude Toubia as Izzy, but I also feel like both the movie and tv series did not live up to the potential of this series, so hopefulle they leave TID and TDA for us to enjoy on paper only, my imagination is doing just fine without Hollywood's influence.
My actor Will is Florian Neuville.I know he isn't a real actor but I saw a picture of him online and instantly thought Will...

Maybe they could dye his hair black and made it curly it would be perfect. If they want his eyes to be bluer than give him contacts. It's just his face.

So I personally think having brand new actors come in would be amazing (sorta like with Harry Potter.) Personally though I've made a vow that if there is ever a casting call for a roll near me for TID then I would go! I can absolutely connect with the character Tessa on both a appearances and physicality scale. But if I didn't get the part then it's no biggie! We all gotta start somewhere!!
Please respect Cassie's wishes and keep Jem Chinese or half-Chinese please, everyone~I'd personally really like Blu Hunt as Tessa (she'll be playing Mirage in The New Mutants; idk but Tessa Gray and her backstory and powers just really reminds me of an X-Men character?? haha) and Yixing Zhang as Jem (Operation Love made me like good cry tbh and he's a musician so he could portray that side of Jem convincingly). Neither of them are particularly well known as of right now, though Blu will probably get bigger with New Mutants and Yixing has a huge fanbase in Asia (for the box office clout)
Also no one heard it from me but Chittaphon Leechaiyapornkul (y'all I spelled his name out like that in one go without looking anything up, proud?) would make a really nice Magnus Bane, heck he loves cats, has cat eyes, has like a 60% chance of being gay, flamboyant and fabulous and snarky and hotthough ofc if there's an indonesian actor we go with that first out of principle because i can't stand whitewashing or treating Asian countries as interchangeable (but admittedly, Thai is at least Southeast Asian as opposed to all the East Asian fancasts) over all else
My Tessa Grey is Emma Watson or Nina Dobrev, My Will is going to be Joshua Anthony Brand, he is a perfect Will Herondale for me, Jem is going to be Anothony Neely.

I always imagine her as Tessa
Let’s leave TID alone, because the only way to do this series well is if they get the perfect actors in looks and character which is going to be really hard, and they usually mess it up with adaptations, so let’s just leave this one alone. All these characters are so complex and this series is so complex, they will never be able to get it right on screen as we hardly see anything complex which is considered young adult with a romance included also.
