Ana is going to start reading Name of the Wind this week. I'll be along for the discussion. It's pretty last minute, but anyone who wants to join in is welcome. :)

So I'm not sure what happened to Ana reading this book, but I will keep the thread up if anyone else wants to read this in the future.

Don H.M (theayatollahofrock) | 23 comments I didn't much like this book at first because i wanted something lawrence of arabia and what i got was stand by me. But halfway through i put on the audiobook and this became one of my all time favorites.

Pat managed to capture the frustration of young naive teen idiots who think they're in love. Kvothe is a bit too full of himself, he is arrogant and thinks himself the smartest person in the commonwealth. The best musicians who ever existed don't describes their own songs with so much acclaim as Kvothe. He thinks he knows how everything is, that seeing him fail miserably at figuring out something simple like Denna turns from hilarious to sad over the course of the narrative. Name of the Wind doesn't bring anything new to the fantasy genre in terms of narrative or characters, it is brilliant for something much more subtle. Name of the Wind uses an entire epic saga to develop the red haired innkeeper in the present as he is now.

For exmple, Kvothe uses the most poetic and beautiful sentences to describe his lute skills, it hints at the fact that our narrator may not be all he claims to be. Denna and his interactions with her are like modern day romeo and juliet. but when he talks about his parents the writing style changes, he uses simple, more direct means to convey their loss, he becomes less full of shit. He thinks of Denna as an angel, and he ignores all the contradicting facts by saying some excuses that add up to Denna going out with every man in the bloody city but Kvothe is her special friend. Yet to Kvothe she is perfect and even i thought she was perfect. Until i realized that this hit way too close to home, and it seems Kvothe might just be delusional about her. It's obvious he still loves her and would crawl over broken glass to lick the tongue of the last man kissed her hand. Inversely, The loss of his parents affects modern Kvothe, alot more than Denna. He hates to bring up the topic and what he doesn't tell us reveals more about them his feelings towards them than a thousand empty words about the fact that he is friend zoned the most elusive prostitute that ever lived.

Simply put Name of the Wind has an entire layer that's hidden right in plain sight. If it weren't for the brilliant Audiobook i would never have ever noticed it and it's even better than people say it is.

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2348 comments I'll probably reread these if Rothfuss ever actually releases the third book.

Argh! I thought the third book was released! Now I know Goodreads users can rate unpublished books... :(

Hacen | 883 comments Sounds like he's as bad as George R.R. Martin. I still can't believe it's been almost six years *cries*

Tammie | 5948 comments I'm beginning to think the third book will never be released. He recently posted an update saying he has completely taken the book apart and started over on some of it.

message 20: by Hacen (new) - added it

Hacen | 883 comments Wow that doesn't sound good. I've been through it with Martin though so if I like Rothfuss' series I'll just have to deal.

message 21: by Laura (new) - added it

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments I hate it when you have to wait for a sequel. Got that from George Martin too. But I really thought the third book in this one will be published this year. It even has a to be available date on Amazon.

message 22: by Laura (last edited Feb 20, 2017 07:19PM) (new) - added it

Laura (lauradragonchild) | 6554 comments ok. just rechecked it and publication date has been moved to 20 August 2020. Not very nice..

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2348 comments And that's probably an optimistic date.

message 24: by Hacen (new) - added it

Hacen | 883 comments Wow how long has it been since the last book?

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2348 comments 6 years.

message 26: by Hacen (new) - added it

Hacen | 883 comments So as long as the wait for winds of winter. It's kind of crazy to me that it takes them that long to write a book when you have other authors of the same quality who can put them out in 1-3 years.

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2348 comments Yes, I read both of those new that year....

Sometimes I feel like us readers are being punked. Like, there's no Winds of Winter or Doors of Stone at all. Just a couple authors rolling in the dough from earlier sales and getting nervous that they might someday have to produce something.

message 28: by Hacen (new) - added it

Hacen | 883 comments Wouldn't surprise me. I definitely think Martin got distracted by game of thrones and all the attention that came with it. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for WoW but you never know what's going to happen.

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2348 comments We'll see. Mostly I try to stay optimistic and hope for the best. And meanwhile, read Sanderson ;)

message 30: by Hacen (new) - added it

Hacen | 883 comments Lol yes seems like you can always depend on Sanderson to publish something every year

Petrik (petrikleo) | 1546 comments Hacen wrote: "Lol yes seems like you can always depend on Sanderson to publish something every year"

with amazing quality!! :)

Tammie | 5948 comments I think it can be very risky for an author to take so long between books. There is a huge chance that people will just give up on the series and stop caring. I'm almost to that point with The Doors of Stone. I'm also not a re-reader so I will forget details after so many years, although I will look for recaps, unfortunately those are hard to find sometimes.

I'm with you – this was one of my favorite series (I loved it so much I joined the BN 100 club for hand selling so many of them when it first came out), but my enthusiasm has definitely bottomed out. I think what bothers me the most is that writing seems to be Rothfuss' lowest priority. I feel like he let me down in a sense. At least we know George RR Martin is actually working on the next book, he's just indecisive LOL.
