Brittany | 312 comments I read this book about 6 years ago. I can't remember if it was paperback or e-book. Female author.
The heroine and hero met years ago and had a whirlwind romance. Hero proposes to heroine and leaves to tell his family in person ( I think it's implied they are rich and snobby and wouldn't approve of her) alone, to ease the way before they meet her. He never comes back and she finds out she is pregnant. Fast forward 9 or so years and she tracks this man down because he is the only one who can help get her daughter back. She doesn't want to ask him, but has no choice. She doesn't understand why he left and is still mad at him obviously. (view spoiler)
I don't recall why the girl was kidnapped, possibly the kidnappers knew who her father was and wanted money? Not positive. I do remember the hero finds her near water, perhaps a dock warehouse or something, and dives down under the water and comes up through the floor of the room she is being held and gets her out that way. I remember him telling her to practice holding her breath so he could tell if she'd make it back to the surface.

Brittany, can you tell us more about the heroine and hero -- their jobs, family/friends, hobbies, etc.? Their daughter is about 9 years old?

Location - U.S./England/country, big city/small town/region?

Brittany | 312 comments I don't remember their professions being mentioned at all. I also don't remember the h's family or friends mentioned. The only mention of H's family I recall is the beginning part where H has to go break the news to them about his engagement as he knows they won't be happy about it. The story mainly focuses on the 2 main characters and their search for their daughter and recapturing the relationship they lost years ago.
The daughter is older than toddler age and younger than teenage. I got the impression she handled herself well despite the kidnapping and being scared. She seemed like a mature and strong young girl.
Definitely took place in U.S., the daughter was held near water, so I'm assuming part of the story takes place in a coastal town - maybe the gulf? I'm not sure.
Their search took them from place to place, but they didn't travel cross country or anything.
One other part I remember is the h getting upset at herself for finding comfort in H's arms in a motel room while her daughter is out there somewhere.
Also, she tells him the girl is his daughter, but I don't think he believes her at first because he doesn't remember her, but she proves she knew him somehow - I think by showing him a ring or something he gave her that had been his or someone's in his family? And that's how he decides to believe her and help her.

Brian by Glenna Sinclair - Sheila's suggestion

Brittany | 312 comments Thank you, but that's not it. Similar plot, but the book I read was published at least 5 or 6 years ago, possibly more, though cell phones were mentioned, so it was written within the last 15-20 years. Also the time apart was no more than 10 years or so.
This book sounds good, though!

Amber (Daisymau) (daisymau) | 1912 comments Night Moves by Sandra Canfield? It's been years since I read it, but I remember that it took place in one of the southern states.

Brittany | 312 comments That book has the closest description I've found, Amber, thank you. Only thing is he is the one who 'betrayed', not her, though it was unintentional due to amnesia. I'll be reading this one, too, though. Thanks!

Dee (austhokie) | 638 comments 72 Hours - i think had a child being kidnapped, but can't remember if son/daughter

Brittany | 312 comments I checked those lists before posting here, but I'll check again and see if anything rings a bell. Thank you for the links!
Thanks for the suggestion Dee, but that's not it. The kidnapped child is a boy in 72 Hours and it was published too recently.

Dee (austhokie) | 638 comments it was originally published in 2006, not 2015 ;)

In New Orleans, though they only met six weeks ago and she still mourns the death of her beloved mother, Paige Reynolds and Johnny Yarbrough share vows of love. He asks her to marry him and she accepts. He gives her his deceased mother's ring to show he is seriously, but tells her he will face his tyrannical father by himself when he informs the old man.
Seven years later, Sally McGowan shows Paige a charcoal sketch in which she had to have been the model. The signature is that of Jay who allegedly died three years ago, but to Paige he died when he never returned for her

Brittany | 312 comments That's it! Thank you so much!
