Vavita Yeah! Can't wait!

message 3: by Mehmet (new)

Mehmet | 1241 comments Me too, sounds like a emotional thrilling ride. Just hope it is a good book. I read Horns by Joe hill and really liked it, so got that as a plus.
Its also interesting that its from a woman perspective. Not read a lot Armageddon scenarios from a female point of view.... although Brian keene did female characters in the Rising series. So there are some, but not many.... unless someone can correct me ?

Jonathan Echevarria (gabrielzero) | 862 comments I'm here guys. Thank you for inviting me. It has been a long time since I have read a horror novel. I am a little rusty and I am excited to start reading again.

message 5: by Kaisersoze (new)

Kaisersoze | 294 comments Reckon I'll accept Johnathan's invitation to join you guys, if that's okay?

message 6: by Mehmet (last edited Aug 22, 2016 01:39PM) (new)

Mehmet | 1241 comments Hello Jonathan old buddy, I have read only 4 horror books this year, but as usual around September time I start to want to read more horror ! So it good for us both to dust off together.

Of course Kaisersoze, welcome to our buddy read for The Fireman. I add your name. Be nice to do another buddy together as our last one was fun, Swan Song !

Sorry guys for the delay response, had a busy day together, but really am glad to be reading this book as a buddy read.

message 7: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 450 comments Are you planning on a certain number of chapters or pages per day? I've still not had chance to read this book yet so joining a buddy read would give me a great push to read it.

message 8: by Mehmet (new)

Mehmet | 1241 comments No chapter or page limits Jennifer, just read at your own pace. You like to join us ? You are more then welcome ^_^

message 9: by Mehmet (new)

Mehmet | 1241 comments I tend to do most of reading at night after work, so i am not the fastest of readers, unless i am on holiday !

message 10: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 450 comments Yes please! I'm looking forward to it!

message 11: by Mehmet (new)

Mehmet | 1241 comments Ok added your name Jennifer and wish you a grand welcome to our buddy read ^_^

message 12: by Vavita (new)

Vavita I am done with Part 1. it is really interesting! I hate Jacob!

message 13: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 450 comments I'm looking forward to this buddy read, and it'll probably be my make or break book for Joe Hill.

I first discovered him when I spotted Heart-shaped Box on the horror shelf in Waterstones, and had no idea he was King's son. That book was quite good, a really good idea, but the execution wasn't great. The original version of my avatar picture has moving scribbles over his eyes, Craddock style. The version of him in my head is terrifying.

Horns was a vast improvement, an excellent story.

Then it went all downhill with NOS4R2 (as it's called over here in the UK). I was massively disappointed with that book. Not scary at all, and pretty dull.

So, The Fireman will be the decider on whether I continue to buy his books when they're first released (like I do with his dad) or whether I wait for the library copy, or buy it paperback.

message 14: by Mehmet (new)

Mehmet | 1241 comments I starting the book soon also Vavita ^_^
This will be my second book of joe hill. I have read Horns, which i enjoyed a lot. Got his other books on my kindle, just not read them yet.

Zero | 4 comments (Jonathan Here. Different Profile.)

So far I am liking the book very much. Like my buddy Mehmet I am a slow reader. I enjoyed Heart Shaped Box, Horns, NOS4A2, Locke & Key and most of his 20th Century Ghost Short Stories.

It isn't a surprise to me that Fireman is as good as the rest of his books. All of his work has a different feel and I enjoy how it never feels like a rehash of a previous story he worked on. I never go in expecting horror with Joe Hill despite some of his work being creepy in different kinds of ways. Fireman especially doesn't feel like a horror story, it feels more like a post apocalyptic fantasy. Though I only reached 200 pages and the story can change at any moment.

I wouldn't surprise me if I don't finish the book until November but I will try to keep up with everyone, It is a fun ride.

message 17: by Mehmet (new)

Mehmet | 1241 comments Just my thoughts so far ^_^

message 18: by Vavita (new)

Vavita Reading this book feels like watching a Jason Bourne movie. I don't want to miss any details and I cannot wait to see what happens next.
Not horror at all but interesting

message 19: by Mehmet (new)

Mehmet | 1241 comments Not horror, but disturbing nevertheless !

message 20: by Kaisersoze (new)

Kaisersoze | 294 comments I'm a big Joe Hill fan. Locke & key is my favourite graphic novel of all time (though I don't read many), I liked Horns, thought Heart Shaped Box started out as creepily as anything I've ever read, and adored NOS4R2. So I'd be surprised if I don't like this ...

That said, I think of him as more a fantasy author than a horror one. And apocalyptic seems to describe The Fireman. Though I'm only 40 pages into my 748 page volume.

message 21: by Jennifer (last edited Sep 07, 2016 05:56AM) (new)

Jennifer | 450 comments I'm only upto page 60 or so, so I'm waaaay behind a lot of you guys, but I'm really enjoying it so far.

End of the world books are everywhere these days, and I like the different angle this one is taking. I'm really happy that the dead stay dead haha.

The writing is really good, and it would be so easy to speed through this book, but I want to keep reading slowly and taking things in.

Hill has painted a good picture of Harper and Jakob so far. I feel like I can actually believe that these two are a couple, not just two people who live together.

And I completely forgot about Locke & Key Kaiseroze! A fantastic series, and gorgeous artwork.

message 22: by Vavita (new)

Vavita This is my first Hill book. I will order all the others once I am done with this one.
I don't like his father's writing but I like his

message 23: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 450 comments Well, things have suddenly got interesting! The idea of getting Dragonscale is awful. Just imagine, you know that you're going to burn to death, but it doesn't happen straight away. It kind of sneaks up on you. I don't think I would be able to handle it, would you guys? I think I would seriously consider ending it all before the fire could take over.

(view spoiler)

message 24: by Vavita (new)

Vavita I would try to keep going till the end.

message 25: by Mehmet (new)

Mehmet | 1241 comments I would like to think i would fight it to the end, like my grandmother who fought the cancer she had right till it killed her. But i would get depressed and so very frightened.

message 26: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 450 comments Fighters like your Grandmother are really inspiring and strong! It would be nice to think I could be like that but I'm a massive wimp when it comes to the thought of burning alive.

message 27: by Mehmet (new)

Mehmet | 1241 comments I do not consider you a wimp in that regard Jennifer, fearing such a thing is normal, as it is scary.

message 29: by Zero (new)

Zero | 4 comments Enjoying the book a lot still. Didn't get the chance to read much yesterday. Not sure how this will all turn out for the main characters and who the main antagonist will end up being. That is one of the great things about Joe Hill. He has a way of misdirecting and not making it obvious where the story may lead.

message 30: by Vavita (new)

Vavita I am on page 400! Even took a day off work to read more (well, it is also the bday of the hubby but I will treat myself with some reading)

message 31: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 450 comments The use of the 'C word' made me laugh. I'm English and it's a really common swear word over here. Plus I'm use to working in a warehouse environment so the warehouse guys use it a lot.

I think the first time I possibly heard it on a US show was on Buffy, as Spike was British.

message 32: by Mehmet (new)

Mehmet | 1241 comments Yeah made me laugh too Jennifer, i could totally relate, not that i swear ( a lot ) but just funny to read british style swearing in a American book.

message 33: by Mehmet (new)

Mehmet | 1241 comments One creepy thing happened last night while reading. I am up to part 2

Spoilers for around page 400.

message 35: by Vavita (new)

Vavita I am almost done with the book. So much happening! I am going crazy.

message 36: by Zero (new)

Zero | 4 comments So much fun!

I got roughly 200 pages left.

I think I liked Horns better but Joe Hill still managed to impress me with this one.

message 37: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 450 comments I really need to catch up with this. I kind of ground to a halt when Harper got to the camp. But I've got a quiet week ahead, and it's really hot in the UK at the moment so I'll be staying inside on my lunch breaks so I'm going to get cracking again!

message 38: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Echevarria (gabrielzero) | 862 comments I have 100 pages left.

Personally I think I might like NOS4A2 a little bit better. But boy is it cutting it close, this is definitely going to be one of my favorite post apocalyptic stories. I even got a little teary eyed near the end.....

message 39: by Vavita (new)

Vavita 30 pages to go people!!!!!
There is a part which was too "romance novel-like" for my taste but still the book is superb!

message 40: by Vavita (last edited Sep 13, 2016 11:15AM) (new)

Vavita I am done! It is amazing! Thrilling until the very end!

(view spoiler) I have been pregnant and that is not the way! (view spoiler) That was the only thing that bothered me.

message 41: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Echevarria (gabrielzero) | 862 comments Up to page 674

I think this is tied with my favorite Joe Hill Book. The last end of the book blew me away and it reminded me of what I loved so much about Locke & Key

message 42: by Mehmet (new)

Mehmet | 1241 comments Only up to page 227, sorry guys I am reading slowly as having hectic time at work.

message 43: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Echevarria (gabrielzero) | 862 comments Mehmet wrote: "Only up to page 227, sorry guys I am reading slowly as having hectic time at work."

It is ok buddy. I never finished our Swan Song buddy read. It gives me time to go back and read it. I really liked that book but there was not enough time to keep up with everyone.

Take your time and enjoy the book. No need to rush.

message 44: by Mehmet (new)

Mehmet | 1241 comments Cheers my friend :-)

message 45: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 450 comments You're ahead of me Mehmet so don't worry. We'll get there!

I'm sure the other guys will still read our posts and comment!

message 46: by Mehmet (new)

Mehmet | 1241 comments I got day off today, so going to catch up on my reading. Feels like it will be another scorcher of a day Jennifer ! Very hot for a September.

message 47: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Echevarria (gabrielzero) | 862 comments I think if we are all caught up by the Halloween season we should go for a Brian Keene book. Maybe The Complex.

message 48: by Mehmet (new)

Mehmet | 1241 comments I be up for that Jonathan ^_^

message 49: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 450 comments I'm upto Page 300 now. I'm not overly interested in the story line at the moment, but the characters are really interesting. I want more Fireman!

message 50: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 450 comments I'm finally finished! I gave it a 3.5 stars. I enjoyed it, but I found it a bit too long, and it was very predictable, I saw the ending coming way before they did!
