I did that years ago.

I actually touched the footprints!

Yes.

Apparently, it is something daughter No. 1 has inherited from me - when giving directions 'turn right'. 'No, not that one - the opposite one.'

Well, if you don't ask, obviously you don't need to know,

Awesome! East Africa is magical.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments We were in the Serengeti, heading toward Lake Natron when I insisted we detour to Oldivai Gorge. The other couple we were on safari with weren't convinced about doing the detour but were very pleased we did, afterward.
We never did make it to Lake Natron, though.
The road there tore up our tyres so we had to turn back. Spent a very interesting several hours in a scratty village while half the men there cobbled our tyres together well enough to make it to the nearest tyre place.
I recall dancing with the village children.

Ah, the good old days.

That brings back memories. Never made it to the Serengeti, but we drove from Asmara to Axum once with a group of people in two 4-wheel-drives. Literally in the middle of nowhere one tire (sorry for the US spelling here!) literally just exploded. The road was pretty much crushed stone, but we later learned that a mechanic back in Asmara had inflated the tires to 44 psi when they were rated to 30! We left the vehicles in Axum and flew to Gonder, then came back through Lalibela and saw the churches carved into rock. All three cities were amazing.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments You're making me homesick for East Africa. :(

Saw a French news report on Eritrea the other day. Although it mostly chronicled how screwed up the government there has made the place, it brought back lots of memories and reminded me how much I liked living there. It's run by authoritarian jerks, but the people and the country are wonderful.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Sounds like home.

I'm assuming you mean Azerbaijan, not Canada! lol

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I dunno. Canada has had its fair share of jerks.

David Manuel | 1112 comments Harper always seemed like quite the jerk to me. In fact, Eritrea's Isaias Afewerki is probably not as big a jerk as Harper. But Isaias is a bit more authoritarian. Can't speak to Aliyev in comparison. Waddya think, Patti. How do you rank order Harper, Isaias, and Aliyev on the jerk scale. And where does Chris Jerk fit in?
