Chapter Three Discussion Thread

Gonzalo (bookponder) | 18 comments I loved Tempers flashbacks about Dassem Ultor. This is my first ICE book and I don't mind the writing at all. Very fun read and glad to be back in the Malazan world.

‘The Hounds and I are akin. Slaves to Shadow in our own ways. But I thank you for your concern. Now you must go.’

I have some theories on who Edgewalker is, so this is definitely spoilery. (view spoiler) That conviction has grown with reading The Kharkanos books.

‘Well, the breaking of the Sword leaves Surly next in line for succession. Dassem, and the two others of the Sword who survived the battle, died that night. Some say Surly had a hand – or a Claw – in that breaking and in those deaths, but that is neither here nor there.

So that could certainly mean that Temper is one of those survivors as he was at the Seven Cities battle where Dassem fell and was hunted by the Claw.

It certainly seems that there is a convergence, with the mention of someone high up arriving as a 'she' and the Bridgeburners being there, it all points to Surly being in town. We know that Artan is one of many who think Kellanved is back in town to reclaim the throne, but Oleg claims he is after a different throne and plans to lose it all to win it all.

And the witch Agayla, is obviously way more than a wax witch. To turn away the soldiers during the purging by talking with a Sargent in the BridgeBurners has me suspect she is an ex-mage of the BB, probably retired.

There was certainly a lot going on in this chapter. But it now looks like everyone is making there way up to the Hold. BB being told by a ghost to get up there means they are working with a mage of some kind you'd imagine.

I am sure you are used to that reading anything Makazan.

Scott Hitchcock (lostinthewarrenofchaos) | 163 comments Yes but in the main series usually every chapter answers one question and open a half dozen more.

Carl | 36 comments Probably my favourite chapter so far. The shadow moon is bringing in some pretty strange things. Kind of a weird horror atmosphere in this book.

Eugenio | 108 comments Just finished chapter 3. Very eventful but Kiska just keeps getting tied up and injured! She keeps talking about wanting adventure, but by Burn does she end up tied up the entire story?!?

The theory that her Aunt may be a BB is interesting! I like it and will keep that in mind as I keep reading. If she is a BB, she will ride in at the last moment, rescue everyone, then use a Moranth munition and blow the place to hell. Oh wait that other BB did that already in that tavern with the hound!! Can't go doing that all the time now can we (FYI sarcastic comment)

Temper fighting with a hound, while getting maimed in the process wasn't what I thought would happen, but he isn't dead until his body has passed through Hood's Gate! That hasn't stopped everyone but is a start!

Onto Chapter 4!

Eugenio | 108 comments Oh yeah, and who is this "water-proof, StormRider-proof, Iceberg-proof" fisherman?!? You'd think with those skills he'd at least have a show in Vegas!

I have no suspicions just enjoying that little side story, which I suspect will tie in

Yes, she wants to prove herself, she wants to become an agent, originally a claw. So she can get off the island.

Eugenio | 108 comments I think she wants to just experience things. Like any child they want to play with the fire, but then realize that their parents (or in Kiska's case Aunt) were just protecting them from something dangerous.

It was hinted at early, and as I am reading further on in the book (and not wanting to be too spoilery) Kiska seems compelled to be out. Compelled to what is out there. Yes she wants to be a claw, a thief, an adventurer. But for me I felt like she had to be out there with those things of legends, like it was calling to her.

Yes I agree with that. She definitely shows more than just potential in being a courier. There are plenty of hints about her abilities. Like jumping over roof tops, as a kid never being found at hide and seek, but finding others. The fact that Agayla took her in, rather than throwing her in the sea and tried to protect/teach her.
