Clear and Simple As the Truth
question
Theory and practice

If you have any doubts about what "classic prose" is, reading this book will dispel them all. As you would expect, the book is beautifully written, but one its most valuable features is that it is replete with a fantastic variety of examples to explain each point made by the authors. In addition, the solid and simple structure of the book make it very digestible. The authors describe the principles of classic style across five components--Truth, Presentation, Scene, Cast, and Thought and Language. The last section in the book--The Studio--gives readers ample opportunity to test what they have read via a number of exercises. And if you are thinking "multiple choice," you will be disappointed! The exercises are deeply thought provoking. Even if you fall short of writing ideal classic prose, reading this book will make you a better writer.
