Terence Mahoney | 2 comments This trade paperback had a cartoon drawing of a sphinx and a prominent question mark on the front cover. There was a discussion of an old carnival trick called "The Missing Chinaman"--visitors were asked to count how many figures of Chinese men were mounted to a wheel. The wheel spun and one of the men was missing. The book challenged readers to figure out which figure disappeared, and where he went. The answer was given of course. There were old magazine contest cartoons where people were shown doing something ordinary and discussing it and readers were challenged to guess what famous name was being hinted at (a man was telling his wife he was sure to lock their front door so their home would be safe; the answer was Sherlock Holmes). There was a drawing of Mars strewn with canals that intersected at spots marked with letters. One was challenged to go from one spot to another in an order that spelled out a message. It was "there is no possible way".

Was it part of a series?

Did you read the book in the 90s or in a later decade?
Hope this gets solved. This is a book I would love to read.
