Lizzie | 81 comments With the cost of books, I have limited myself to STO, Voyager, and Enterprise, the latter being that there are a lot fewer of them. I do like ST:D9 but haven't bought those. Occasionally, there are crossover books of one in each Star Trek series and I usually purchase those to read. I like DS9 but haven't invested in those due to budget considerations. There are also additional series such as books that "star" Sulu or Riker and some others that I have noticed but not read.

I would do a poll as I think it would be interesting to see the results, but I don't know how to set that up. (I know I could learn, but my computer usage is limited by my disability.) If anyone wants to comment, I am interested in if you pick a series because of which TV show you preferred or because of quality of writers being better in one over another, or because of preferring a specific character. I have friends who mock STOS but love STNG.

Erica (ericarustrian) | 7 comments I'm currently reading through the Voyager books. I started reading those because I love Voyager and it's by far my favorite Trek. I love to read about my favorite characters from the show.

When I finish with the Voyager books I plan to read other Trek, too. The plan is to read TNG from after the movies, DS9 relaunch and Titan (since that series have Riker and Troi in it, plus Tuvok from Voyager). It will take me a few years to read all of this, but that's just fine with me. :)

Titan because Tuvok a Voyager character is in it? or because you like Riker and Troi?

Both. But I guess mostly because I like Riker and Troi. That was how it started out. I heard about Titan being a series involving Riker being the captain and that he and Troi were on that ship together. So then I decided to read those books at some point. Then I heard about Tuvok being on the ship as well, and saw that as a good thing that would be interesting to read about.

Brandon Harbeke | 33 comments I prioritize my reading based on who the author is and the premise of that book's story. Authors like James Swallow, Kirsten Beyer, and Una McCormack get higher consideration, and there are others like Michael Martin who get moved to the very end of the line.

I tend to prefer books that explain lore from the series, continue past the series finale, or do something that would have been difficult or impossible to portray onscreen.

Based on those, I choose Voyager and Titan books the most, but I also love the TNG novels.

Assuming you were being serious...How about going through your shelves and thinking about what you liked best about each book or series? No need to continue the series or follow the authors who don't leave a mark.

Or get a library card. Or buy used books.

I buy used books, Star Trek and others. Bookmans is 1.5 hours away, but I go in there a few times a year and spend $100 at an average of $1.50 a book. Our town no longer has any bookstores, which is another problem. Other times, I buy them through the Amazon third parties.

I used to do that, a long time ago, when there weren't so many. Then it got out of hand - where do you put them all?

Bruce | 44 comments I switched to ebooks because my books were taking up too much space. And I don't want to get rid of them.

I read a lot of ebooks, but the Star Trek ones I still buy in print/paper. I resent spending the same amount on an ebook without anything in hand. The cloud might just disappear. My kindle is less than 6 months old and has a glitch which means i have to send it back to get a replacement and then reload everything again. My physical books could catch on fire, get flooded, or other catastrophes but I feel safer with them. My age is showing probably.

Worse, my favorite authors, like Lois McMaster Bujold, or series like Dune and Alan Dean Foster's Pip and Flinx, I still buy hardcovers.

Erica (ericarustrian) | 7 comments I prefer print books as well, and I'm 28. I like the feeling I get when I get to hold the book and see it as a physical thing on my shelf. :)

And for some reason I prefer paperbacks.

Ash | 1 comments I like DS9, TOS, TNG, ENT. Reading Typhoon Pact now.

Kevin Hughlett | 3 comments I am a huge fan of the original series, and not the alternate reality created by the new movies. The Next Generation would be a close second.

My daughter is 32 and prefers printed books too. She buys a lot of hardcovers. I suspect liking printed books is not as much an age thing; my fear of trusting the cloud probably is.

Stephane Lacharite | 1 comments I'm a new reader of Star Trek books. But I'm a great fan of TV series.

I begin to read with Dayton Ward novel : Elusive salvation. I do not finish yet, but it is very interesting for a first book.

I liked that one too. I think the author does a good job. If you like the author's treatment of the characters and Star Trek world, I suggest
That Which Divides (Star Trek) by Dayton Ward and From History's Shadow by Dayton Ward

George | 4 comments I try to alternate between series, reading one or two books from each series, but I would have to say that my favorites are the Original Series and Next Generation.

I have 10 boxes of Star Trek books in my storage room. I had to make room on my 20 shelves (3 feet each), I did keep out the Eugenics Wars because I want to read it a 3rd time.

Considering my daughter has claimed some of my science fiction as her own and absconded with it, that I donated my Star Wars, Quantum Leap, and other TV series books in July, I am at the point of double stacking the shelves again. Another 450 books on my kindle. 98% is sci fi. Some of these books, including Star Trek series, I have owned since I was 17 (40 years ago), and they have moved from NJ to TX to NM to AZ to WI and back to AZ.

Your need to prioritize - eventually the budget forces one into it. I used to own a collection of legal thrillers, Patterson, Grisham, Kellerman, and so on. I donated them to a library when moved in 2006 and switched to just reading them from the library.

Your need to own books, I totally approve of because it helps justify my own!

a.l.s | 3 comments The first book i read of the star trek books was generations from tng. I loved it, expecially the charecter of data but actually was not aware it was based of a tv show (i was in 3rd grade). In 5th grade i stumbled upon reruns of tos randomly one day and fell in love with the show, expecially spock. After that i was a big tos fan. I still buy and occasionally read tng book. I do enjoy them but my loyalty still remains with the original series

Amelia (amelianichole) TOS is hands down my favorite series to read. There is something special about the original crew that just isn't there for me in the other books. I only like TNG books with Q in them. :P

I actually prefer TNG as a tv series, I like VOY, and am coming to terms with DS9. ;)

The latest movie, Star Trek Beyond, felt like one of the TOS novels to me. It rekindled my love of Star Trek so I finished the last of the unread Star Trek novels on my shelves in the last couple of days.

Daniel (danintennessee) | 12 comments I'm alternating now between the 'A time to' series and New Frontier. Mostly these just keep getting better and better. If I have any complaints about the former it would be that I expected a more coherent story arc. They are connected and I'm only on 'A time to Harvest, but I'm hoping that a more complex plot develops to connect the series. Im reading two ST novels a month. It's a joy.

Bree (breezybree) | 3 comments I dabble in the TOS and TNG books but ALWAYS read the Voyager Relaunch books. If someone says they enjoyed a story, I typically will give it a go. But I have re-read most of the Voyager relaunch books more than once. Full Circle and A Pocket Full of Lies being favorites. Other favorites would be the Dark Matters trilogy by Golden that was in the Voyager numbered books and the Legacies trilogy that came out last year for the 50th.

message 25: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | -5 comments I'm a huge fan of TOS TV, movies, and novels. The reboot movies were exciting, but feel more like a blockbuster action flick. I truly enjoy the novels cause it captures what TOS tv shows and earlier movies were about. I enjoyed TNG shows and films, and one day will probably read a few novels in future. I don't buy many books though. I prefer print over ebooks unless not available in print. Usually I'll buy the novel if it was something I really enjoyed. Like Spock's World or Reign in Hell: The Exile of Khan... I'm sure as I get older, I might be spying eBay or Amazon for good deals to decorate a book shelf of Trek novels I've read. For now, library does a pretty good job obtaining novels in print or ebook for me so I don't have to spend any money. Even if they don't currently have a copy, you can recommend to library. Maybe when I get more novels under my belt, it will be more difficult.

W On TV,I liked TNG more, but in books I prefer Voyager.

That's interesting. I usually find that the TNG fans are not much interested in Voyager. I always preferred Voyager over TNG.

The different types of fans when going to Star Trek conventions back when TNG and Voyager were both on the air was interesting. They were definitely separate camps.

message 28: by R (new)

R Me too, DS9 was also my favorite series. I've read a lot of NG but enjoy DS9. After reading randomly, I got Avatar books, just started book 1.. so excited to have the series continue!

message 29: by W (new)
