message 1: by Lee (new) - rated it 3 stars

Lee | 35 comments I'm nearly done re-reading this; I bought & read it when it first came out (probably freshman year of college). I gave it 3 stars when I joined Goodreads, I'd give it 2 now.

The plot was OK, not great.

The characterizations of the main crew seemed neat at first, weaker now. There so many young-adult-level of secrets kept or things-unsaid that it stretched credulity for me. The non-regular characters were OK, if somewhat one-note.

The characterization of the rest of the setting, such as Starfleet or the Klingons, seemed out of sync with many other things I've read, as did the chronology of events relative to other books & apocrypha.

Bruce | 44 comments This was the first Star Trek novel that I ever read. I remember thinking that it wasn't that good and some characters felt off. The second novel I read was The Lost Years, which I liked better. So I read the first and last adventures of the five-year mission back to back. 25 years later, I've read over 300 Star Trek novels and am on a Star Trek books & comics podcast. And it all started with this novel. Fond memories.
