A Thousand Splendid Suns
question
recommendations: books about being a voice for the voiceless

Hello all,
I am a high school English teacher, and I need some book suggestions. I have taught A Thousand Splendid Suns for several years now, and it's amazing, but it doesn't appeal to all students. I emphasize the theme of being a voice for the voiceless/standing up for what you believe in.
This year I want to offer the students a choice to either read ATSS or one of several others that are also about that same idea. I've been Googling and wracking my brain, and this morning it occurred to me--Goodreads! So, does anyone have recommendations? I mainly teach 11th and 12th graders. Thank you so much!

Hi Rhonda,
This year I have read Strumpet City, The Grapes of Wrath and Oliver Twist.
Although these books are set in the past, the issues that the characters face are still rampant. "Strumpet City", though set in the early 1900s, could have been written about Dublin today.
"The Grapes of Wrath" gives a voice to the refugees, forced out of their homes. The very same is happening to the refugees fleeing to Europe. They must leave their homes and are treated like second class citizens when they reach a new country.
It's so sad to see that decades later, so many people are voiceless and the same problems are arising.
