Now we've done a couple of Group Reads cycles since I took over as mod, I've come up with a few guidelines for nominations to help avoid any confusion. If you have any you'd like to add or feel very strongly against, please say so!
Distinction between MH and Non MH Read.
Unless members would like to start narrowing down the Non MH category to specific genres (which I'm completely open to) we can keep this quite simple. To qualify for the MH Read, it has to be about mental health in some way. Fiction or non-fiction, doesn't matter, but it does have to be obvious from the description that it is about mental health. Anything else can qualify for the Non MH read.
No self-nominating
I appreciate we have a lot of authors in the group, however if you are looking for reviews and feedback, Author's Corner is the place for that. Group Reads is an opportunity for us to explore and discuss other literature. I'm particularly keen that it does not become a vehicle for self-promotion, particularly if authors then do not participate in the group as a whole.
Please consider titles that are widely available and not too expensive
It's hard to have a concrete definition of 'not too expensive' given that we have members from across the world, but in order to be as inclusive as possible, please choose books that are likely to be freely available in the major book retailers and websites (Amazon is usually a good indicator). This often also means they're likely to be available at a local library for those who can't afford to buy the title. If anyone has a maximum price they'd be willing to pay, please do say so to help give the rest of the group guidance in nominating.
Please vote for a title you want to read!
Votes will remain anonymous and I'm not going to turn into the Group Reads police, but if you do vote, please do vote for something you are likely to read. Otherwise, we can end up in a situation where a title wins and then only a couple of people (who might not have even voted for it) read it and participate in the discussion.
As always, I welcome feedback on any of the above, this group is for all of its members to enjoy and participate in. We can see how we go with the September/October window and review towards the end of the year if needed.
Thanks all and happy nominating!
