I like writing in coffee shops but I always feel bad if I sit there for too long and don't buy another coffee!!
I thought the coffee shop would work for me, but now realise that a quiet space at home is my best bet. Coffee shops offer too many distractions and are better as a source of inspiration and people watching. I am more likely to scribble short observation notes on people's mannerisms and conversation clips in those kind of locations.

I wonder if writers tend to fall into two camps - those who need activity and sound around them (Jung called them Extroverts) and those who need quiet (Introverts)? I'm definitely the latter - can't write or even read properly with chatter/radio on! Whereas my husband loves his open-plan office...

Based on Jung's theory then, I suppose I fall into the Introvert category where writing is concerned, but in 'life' and outside my own front door I would consider myself an Extrovert. Any explanation for that? :(
I write just about any place. I finally figured out how to write using my kindle for when I'm away from home, but I prefer to write at home--kitchen table, breakfast bar, couch, my sunroom off the bedroom. I am home alone all day so less interruptions. I need quiet to get started after each interruption-hubby trying to carry a conversation (the nerve of him), eating to satisfy that growly tummy, sleep-or should I say, lay in bed and think about what I'm going to write in the morning ...
But once I get going on a scene, there could be bombs exploding around me and I wouldn't notice.
The most interesting observation I've made is that I always think I will get so much writing done while I'm on vacation. All that time sitting on the beach, on the balcony of our room, the plane ... but I have yet to master that.

Thank you for your interesting comment. Jung reckons we're innately either Introvert or Extrovert and we 'learn' the opposite in order to better manage our life situations. Is one more natural to you?

I can block out noise if I'm into a scene but hate interruptions lest my train of thought get blown to bits. When I write at home my husband also likes to interrupt and I have to hush him until I can finish what I'm writing. Wish I could write on the bus but I get bus sick if I look down at my laptop.
