Excellent post, Martyn. I also like your attitude about verisimilitude in writing. Not nearly enough authors pay attention that little pea under the mattresses of readers! One should never underestimate a readers ability to spot the lack of verisimilitude (not to be confused with reality).
As to A.J.'s question, like you, I write anywhere and everywhere...;o)

Bob D'Eith (bobdeith) | 9 comments I write on the commuter train. I have written two books on the train. Two clear hours a day. No kids. No work. No distractions. It is wonderful. Thanks for the post!

Victoria Zigler (toriz) | 2898 comments I end up coming up with ideas and creating scenes in my head anywhere and everywhere, and I'll write just about anywhere, but most of my writing does end up done either while laying on my bed or sitting at my desk these days.

Belle Blackburn | 166 comments In bed. It's the comfiest place I know.

Christine Tryon (CSTryon) | 15 comments In my home office. It has the most comfortable office chair ever! I had to designate a time of day that I could write without it interfering with my day job and when I wouldn't be interrupted by my family.

I stay up late A LOT! I prefer writing in the afternoon after my workout and before dinner. One hour of pure bliss on a consistent basis most days of the week.

A.J. Waines (ajwaines) | 92 comments The 'write anywhere' people are very lucky!! I get ideas all over the place - that's different - they just pop up when I'm at the bus-stop, in the bath, watching TV etc. I have notebooks in every room of the house. But the focused writing - I NEED quiet!

Thank you, Lex.

When I write negative reviews on books which lack verisimilitude, I sometimes get authors complaining that they 'write for entertainment', but I always reply that I was not entertained by their lack of research.

Of course, I admit I'm a bit of a research addict. I have 1 autopsy scene in my first book, but instead of copying notes from 'CSI' or 'Bones', I persuaded a forensic pathologist to allow me to stand next to him during an autopsy, both because I was interested in the experience and because I wanted to write a 'real' autopsy scene.

For my current WIP, about a heroin-addicted nomadic pickpocket, I sat with addicts while they scored heroin, and I got a private course by a pickpocket.

And if I can't do something myself, I have specialists who explain in detail how to treat bullet wounds or dismember a human body.

I used to experience the pop up ideas, like you. I had note pads and pens in every room. But now, I just sit down at the computer and write or try to write.

Dreaming does happen everywhere; writers never stop thinking about a passage or plot they are working on, no matter where they are or what they are doing.

Carol Preston (carolap) | 29 comments I think about writing, and plan writing anywhere; in bed at night, on a bus, in the car, even while I'm at dinner with friends. Depends what ideas come. But I like to write in my office, with all my research and notes laid out on my desk, where I have complete quiet and solitude.

message 19: by J.h. (new)

J.h. Coates | 8 comments I have to write at my desk with notes and binders scattered around me in disarray. Seriously, I am surrounded in a sea of books, receipts, lined paper, printer paper, at least 3 calendars all with different messages on same days, pens, markers, flyers and I am currently looking at a fire alarm that should probably be up in the house somewhere. My lamp is missing the shade, I keep meaning to look for it but never do. I come up with ideas everywhere, I sometimes can even remember some of them by the time I get back to my desk to write. I’d love to write anywhere but I have the attention span of an Irish Setter and Beagle with a case of doggie-downs and would be more apt following a butterfly or some bubbles the kids blew in the backyard then actually get any real writing done.

message 20: by A.R. (new)

A.R. Simmons (arsimmons) | 63 comments I write at my desk, usually in the very early morning when the house is asleep and my mind is fresh. I take notes, outline, and plan on a legal pad. Somewhere in the first editing process, I construct a database of scenes to make sure that I know which characters know what and when.
Coffee is my "drug of choice." Give me a cup and a small square of dark chocolate, and I'm good to go.

You are very good - if I could get some dark chocolate in front of me when there is a coffee around, I'm not sure that I could stop at one square :(
Several squares would inspire me sooooooooooo much more!!! :)

Scarlett Finn (scarlettfinn) | 49 comments Great post. I blogged about this discussion because it got me thinking - scarlettfinn.wordpress.com I can write anywhere and this got me thinking about all the weird and wonderful places I've done it - kind of like looking back at all the places I've been naughty, lol.

Penny Ross | 26 comments I write on my couch most of the time with my laptop. I have background music on since it gets me in the zone. When the weather is nice I sit outside in my gazebo while I write. I love listening to the birds while I peck away at the keyboard. I find it restful yet inspirational.

I prefer a lap top for my novels and freehand for my children’s books. For my latest novel, ‘Stolen Spirits’ I sketched out chapter outlines freehand on recipe cards partway through the book. I have so many characters I got confused where some of them were during the murder.
