Quantum (quantumkatana) Goals
A spreadsheet is far more usable than links spread out over many posts. For instance, it is centralized, and easy to scan and sort.

In a cursory perusal, I don't see any other GR writing groups providing this kind of easy-to-use service, so it would be another selling point to join the group (if a goal is to grow the group).

We would mainly use google drive, which is free up to 5gb per account. We could use the Resources discussion folder. In it we could have a locked post w/links to our resources.

Advantages
* Any document in Google drive can be self-managed and crowd-sourced. That is, anyone can directly add their resource to it and edit the spreadsheet as much as they want. They don't even have to log in.

* It can be managed on the honor system.

* People can periodically download it to their own computer just in case the online version gets fubar'd--although it does have version control.

* If too many people start modifying it and we need to impose some procedures, then it could be locked down and the editing and viewing limited to certain email addresses.

* Google drive allows storage up to 5gb. But the 5gb limit per account isn't limiting in any practical sense because each member could host some of the files and I seriously doubt that every member who wanted to host this group's resource files would hit the 5gb limit--unless we start hosting thousands of pictures.

Here's an example of a resources spreadsheet that i created on google drive:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/...

Right now, it's stored under my google account, but at some point we could move it to a wealth, writing, world google account.

Action Items
If people, especially the mods, think that this is a good idea, then we should have an FAQ post and point existing members to that FAQ as well as advertise the FAQ and Resources links.

An ad for the FAQ and Resources should be prominently displayed in the group description.

In addition, when new members come on board, it would be good to let them know about those two postings.

Annie Arcane (anniearcane) Noooo, thank YOU for the brilliant thinking!! Just FYI I moved this sucker over to Resources too.

@Mr Nik and Miss Tara: If I'm creating a hurricane here with my anal retentive organization, tell me and I'll stop hahaha!! No, really. Tell me. Please.

Hugs,
Ann

Quantum (quantumkatana) Where are you considered putting the guidelines? Maybe another sheet in the spreadsheet would be convenient & maintainable?

message 6: by Annie (new)

Annie Arcane (anniearcane) @Mr Alex: Nah, I think I'll put em in the pinned and locked thread. I don't want guidelines to be changeable by everyone...

*trades in Katana for thigh highs (own these) and cat-o-nine-tails (don't really own this haha)*

Tee hee.

message 7: by Quantum (new)

Quantum (quantumkatana) Ok, that is a good point.

Also, on my drive into work, I remembered hat it would be a good idea to add the link to the web-published version. That way people won't have to worry about accidentally modifying the spreadsheet.

Annie Arcane (anniearcane) Done and done.

Quantum (quantumkatana) Thx, Ann! This is so great! No more scrolling thru miles of posts.

Too bad the web version doesn't allow sorting on the columns.

Maybe at some point we could add Marie's list of promo sites, if Marie doesn't mind. On a different sheet, methinks. I can do that over the weekend or maybe tonite or tomorrow if I'm so inclined.

Quantum (quantumkatana) Ideas are a dime a dozen. It's the driving that gets you where you want to go.

Ian Miller | 1857 comments I am in. If it is of interest, one resource I use is Jutoh. This is paid, but was quite cheap when I purchased it. I complies ebooks, and as far as I am concerned makes a good job and is easy to use. Not only that, but when I had trouble with compiling some scientific stuff, they went out of their way to develop new versions (three!) to get over my difficulties.

Annie Arcane (anniearcane) @Mr Ian: Thank you for the suggestion! We're just getting the spreadsheet and guidelines in place now. Stay tuned...

Hugs,
Ann
