Our September group read theme is "From Bookish to Bad*ss". In other words, the lead character(s) is a scholarly, nerdy, bookish type who becomes an action hero over the course of the novel. Let's celebrate nerd power!

Other group read considerations apply:

1. One nomination per group member. The books must be nominated with a Goodreads link by clicking on 'add book/author'. If a book does not have a Goodreads link, it will not be added to the poll.
2. Books need to be readily available, ie, in print (able to buy new or in ebook format).
3. Books should have some degree of action/adventure content.
4. Past group reads are not eligible to be nominated again. The past group discussions remain open for members to comment. You may see the list of past reads here:

https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

5. Books must be either standalone or first in a series (or they may be later in a series if constructed to be read as a standalone).

The poll will go up on or around August 9th.

Jim (jimmaclachlan) I'll nominate Death of a Citizen by Donald Hamilton. Helm starts out as a middle aged free lance writer with 3 children, a wife, & a boring middle class life in this book which takes place 15 years after WWII.

Helm has been called the American James Bond & these were written about the same time. While Hamilton wasn't an OSS agent like Fleming, he did write for hunting magazines, so he is very accurate in his portrayal of guns & terrain. Only the game has changed. He used pieces of nonfiction articles he wrote on hunting moose in Sweden in the second book practically word for word.

Love the Helm books. I think so far as reality goes they're better than the Bond books. Sadly they suffer from being the victims of REALLY bad movies and TV.

This is one my favorite spy novels. IMO much better than Casio Royale.

You're right! The WORST. Apparently the producers of the movies decided they couldn't directly compete with the Bond movies due to budget constraints, so they decided to make them into comedies like Coburn's Flynn character. They were a awful.

The books are being republished now & in another year or so the last Matt Helm novel should be published. Hamilton wrote it before he died, but couldn't get it published since it had been so long since his last one. The first 10 are available as audio books from https://www.downpour.com, BlackStone Audio's consumer site. They're great.

I've listened to most of them. I hadn't thought about Helm for this topic. I'd like to see more people discover the books.

I think I will nominate The Inner Circle (Culper Ring, #1) by Brad Meltzer The Inner Circle.

I have been wanting to try this author, and I think this story fits the criteria...sounds like a fun read!

Melissa Krueger | 37 comments Thanks for inviting me. I'd almost forgotten about Goodreads until I found an email from the Book Huntress (love that alias).

Because it's political (but doesn't take sides) I'll nominate:
Death and Dark Money (Sabel Security #4) by Seeley James

Sorry the poll is so late. Finishing up my last week of summer school.

I'd like to nominate Zero Sight. This book is a little gem. It's only available on ebook though.

I've had this book on my kindle for a while now. It must have been offered free at some time. I guess I need to get busy and read it!
