Sushicat | 292 comments Going back to the original question, I personally think that no book should be on the list before it has been out there at least 10 years.

That's an interesting proposal. I do like the idea that a book should be able to withstand the test of time in order to be included on such a list. It makes me want to go back to the list and see which book on the list has the most recent publication date.

I agree with Jen, that's a great idea.

Sushicat | 292 comments I just checked - as the last edition was 2012, I listed all books published after 2002: 65 books (about 5% of the list), 14 of which only made the 2006 edition.
Looking at it from the other end:
Of the 130 books published between 1997 and 2006 61 were only in the 2006 edition and only 54 that are still included in the 2012 edition (I can't tell from my list, when they were added though).

I would add The Sellout and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell of the books I've most recently read. I remember thinking at the time that it's too bad a new edition isn't coming out. I really don't think there will be a new edition. I think the editors have moved on to other things.

But publishers never stop a series until it stops selling.

Maybe it's not selling enough to make up for cost of publishing.

I thought of that after I posted my comment. Once you have the book, would you really lay out the bucks for a new copy just to have the 10 or 12 changes? I want the changes, but usually could care less about what the book says about them. It very well may be a self-limiting endeavor.

Maybe they will embrace modern technology and make an app or allow the other app to be used and update that with new books. or maybe it's just because I would've an app that I am thinking that way lol

An app would be great but the editors refuse to work wth guy (Arukiyomi)who created the app, threaten law suits and won't help him now that he did all they asked. They do however work with him on the movie app, so maybe that's a better money maker.

The publishing world is strange. I'm afraid Taebaek Mountains may have fallen into a contractual nightmare as the company that signed to do the translation seems to be defunct - at least they don't seem to have updated their webpage in about 3 years. At this rate, I will get my Korean brushed up and read it in the original before they get around to the translation.

I agree that all books not translated should be removed from the list until they have been translated into English. That may be a little harsh but after all the book is sold primarily in the US and England so I don't think it is unreasonable.

:-)

This is "Random Comments" - If it has something to do with books it can't really be off topic.

Maybe you should stick to learning French and one day, I can lend you my French edition of the Taebaek Mountains :). From what I found, it appears that French is the only language in which a translation of this novel exists.

John Seymour Merci, mais mon fils apprend Korean, ma femme sait korean et je suis un peu rouillé, mais mon Korean est mieux que mon français. Mais, je vais continuer à étudier français - j'aime ça.

I apologize for the delay but I will be posting my BOTM questions (for Kidnapped) this evening. Hopefully that doesn't hold anyone up.
