Walter Spence (walterspence) | 573 comments Currently on page 32. Having a bit of trouble getting into it, and I'm thinking this may be due to the use of the present tense narrative. I have no objections to that style, used it in my most recent manuscript in fact, albeit sparingly with only one character, and that when using the first person. But the constant use with the third person is starting to feel a bit awkward.

Anyone else have any issues with this? Or is it just me?

Teri | 28 comments Read this one a few months back - he nailed the voices of the teen boys. Have only watched the first episode of Stranger Things, so can't give an opinion yet on the similarities.

Latasha (latasha513) | 11983 comments I'm listening to the audio book and they have just found the last journal pages. I've seen (and love) stranger things but so far this reminds me of Dark Places. I think that's the name. The one by Gillian something & it's about Libby & her brother. We read it in the group last year.

message 54: by Jody (new)

Jody I liked this book and did not like it. Not a fan of the narrative at all, but was an okay story. Picks up in middle and continues to the end. Beginning was tough to get through.

aPriL does feral sometimes (cheshirescratch) I got my library copy today, and starting tonight.

Shannanigans (shananigans13) Found at local library. Wanted to read this since i read "head full of ghosts"

message 57: by Latasha (new)

Latasha (latasha513) | 11983 comments I'm finished. I didn't hate it but it wasn't my favorite either. I still think it's more like Dark Places than stranger things.

aPriL does feral sometimes (cheshirescratch) Meh. Did not like it. I liked what the author tried to do, though.

Jennifer | 450 comments I'm about 3/4 of the way through, and I'm enjoying it. I was gripped from Page 1 and tore through 100 pages or so. The momentum has worn off a bit as it seems like Tommy is gone forever, so the urgency has gone. But, I guess that's kind of the case in real life, loads of hype at the beginning and then it tapers off.

I've not seen Stranger Things yet so I don't have the comparison, which sounds like a good thing if people are enjoying the show more.

I am past half-way and I am liking it. I think he really captures the suspense and horror of a parent whose child is missing. I also thought the way the three remaining family members (including grandmother) started tearing one another apart was terrifyingly real.

Arnold does add urgency. The disappearance takes on a more mysterious tone when he is brought in.

Kelly | 26 comments Really enjoying this one so far, about 25% in. I'm really bummed about the ebook version, though, and how difficult it is to read the note pages.

message 62: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 450 comments Well, I really enjoyed that book. It's probably not really horror but it did make me feel a lot of suspense.

The characters seemed realistic and likeable to me, and I really felt for them.

The only negative I can think of, and it's just something minor, is that it seemed like from quite near the start that they had decided that Tommy was gone. It made the urgency decrease a little, but it was still a great story anyway.

This is the first time I've read this author and I'll be looking out for other books by him.

For another book, try Head Full of Ghosts. I liked that one.

Kim Rox | 41 comments Based on the (mostly) great reviews of this book, I was really excited about it. The premise sounded promising and never having read anything by this author, I had high expectations of delving into something new and fresh. Perhaps that was my mistake. I disliked this book so intensely, that by the time I put it down, I was ready to chuck it into a blazing inferno whilst laughing manically and dancing a jig (crazy, right?). On a positive note, the mention of "Stranger Things" on Netflix has sparked my interest; I just might have to give it a try.

Kendall (kendalln) As usual I am late to the party and still waiting on my copy to come in. AHHHH. Hopefully I will get it before the end of the month.

Hi. I finished the book and I agree with the people who said it was more thriller. There really wasn't much of a horror aspect to it.

message 69: by Rockchickjo (new)

Rockchickjo I read A Head Full of Ghosts and I really enjoyed it. I bought this book last week and I'm hoping it's going to be just as good if not better!

Kelly B (kellybey) | 630 comments I'll finally be starting this book later today. I'll wait and read the comments after I finish it.

message 71: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 26 comments Finished this one the other night. While I wouldn't necessarily throw it in the horror genre, it really did give me the creeps when I was reading it at home alone or in the dark after my husband fell asleep. That could be mostly due to the fact that I'm already kind of afraid of the dark, but the thought of faces outside my window, man - I could not hide deep enough under the blankets.

Kelly B (kellybey) | 630 comments Just finished.

After reading the comments in this thread, I thought this book would be a "meh" to "good" for me; to my surprise, I found that I loved it!

I did find it scary, and would (and did on my Goodreads shelves;-) classify it as horror. The (view spoiler)

I didn't see much of a resemblance between this book and Stranger Things, other than the boys hanging out together, and the suburban/woods setting.

I had issues with the narrative for the first few pages, until I got used to it. Then I didn't notice it anymore.

Kendall (kendalln) Whoo Hoo, this book is in my hands and I am about to get started!

message 76: by Kendall (new)

Kendall (kendalln) I finished this in the wee hours of the morning. It held my attention enough to not want to put it down but I didn't love the story. I enjoyed the creepy factor and the suspense but the story itself not so much. I agree that it is much more a suspense book than a horror book. It was creepy though. I will admit to jumping at the slightest noise in the house as I was reading.

I totally agree with you on that. There was no good reason for it. Well, there is never a good reason to kill someone is there but you know what I mean.

Gayle (OutsmartYourShelf) (outsmartyourshelf) This book was ok but not as thrilling a read as I expected. I felt like the paranormal side of it was ramped up through the first half of the book, and I anticipated it playing a big part in the ending, but then suddenly..it all felt very pedestrian. I have A Head Full of Ghosts on my TBR list and will still probably give it a go.

I liked Head Full of Ghosts much better. It was the first book I read by Tremblay.

message 80: by Nitzan (new)

Nitzan | 4 comments My copy had a LOT of grammatical errors in it, but nobody else mentioned it in any of the reviews. I'm starting to think I got a bad/earlier edition or something. Did anybody else notice all the mistakes?

message 81: by Rob (new)

Rob Sharp | 74 comments I don't recall any errors, none that leapt out at me anyway. Where did you get yours from?

message 82: by Nitzan (new)

Nitzan | 4 comments Ordered it from bookdepository.com. It's the Titan Books paperback edition.

message 83: by Mitch (new)

Mitch Meredith (mister_m_reads) | 7 comments I really enjoyed this book. Took me about a week to finish it. One of the best books I've read in a while. I highly recommend it!
