Honestly, I don't think in a particular person who is the blame in this novel. All the characters has their own tragedy, Tom, Isabel and Hannah. The life is hard, specially after War World I. The world wasn't the same before that and the author show us this since the begining with Tom. So, I think, nobody is guilty, they just take wrong choices.
