To the Americans: since this book is an assigned reading in American schools, it would be interesting to know what you'd learned about it at school even if it was a long time ago ;-)
To the other English native speakers: is it an assigned reading as well?

Well it wasn't assigned reading when I was at school we were more into Hardy, Priestley et al.....and I first read Gatsby along with other great American novels in my twenties. Absolutely loved the depth and beauty of the prose then as I do now. A joy to read.

Thanks, Jenny. You are absolutely right. I wouldn't have read this book ever should it not have been one of Bowie's favourites. What a mistake it would have been!
I was utterly dazzled by the beauty of the prose as you've justly described and by the incredible depth of the storyline and the book's characters. A masterpiece!
