There is a separate field for series so it should not be in the title field at all.
In my experience, I have left it blank and the system auto fills in correctly

Because the series display is currently not complete across the website, meaning that the hyperlinked series does not display in all areas / pages of GR while if it is in the title field it does.

If the series isn't in the title field, then it isn't searchable. This can be very important for some books that have common titles.

Readers not only do not see series info displayed, for example, on site search results; they also don't see the series information on their bookshelves or if they search their bookshelves using the series name. The series field is not a display option/column under "my books."
"Optional" might be a confusing way to say it. Maybe "not required" is a better way of putting it (particularly for old timers who at one time on goodreads were required to put series info in titles in order to put the book correctly in its series).

Can't believe I forgot that. Especially important when the U.S. and U.K. versions have different titles (other language variations as well, but Harry Potter came to mind first).
Italian and Spanish don't resort the filing characters.French sometimes does.
English and German usually do.
