Hi Guys,
This month we will be reading The Drawing of the Three by Stephen King. I know I'm a little early setting this up but I'm just so excited to get stuck into this one. This is the second book in King's Dark Tower series so if you've not read The Gunslinger I'd advise doing so before the start of this read. I also tell people that The Gunslinger is very strange but stick with the series because it's totally worth it!
So, here we go:

Schedule:
Week 1: August 1-7: Argument - The Prisoner, Chapter 5: Showdown and Shoot-out, pgs 1-134
Week 2: August 8-14: The Prisoner, Chapter 5: Showdown and Shoot-out - The Lady of Shadows, Chapter 3, Odetta on the Other Side, pgs. 135 - 236
Week 3: August 15-21: The Lady of Shadows, Chapter 3, Odetta on the Other Side - The Pusher, pgs. 236 - 352
Week 4: August 22-28: The Pusher - End, pgs. 352 -end

Summary
On his journey across the Mid-World to reach the Dark Tower, errant knight Roland of Gilead, the Last Gunslinger, encounters three doors - each leading to New York. Here he joins forces with defiant Eddie Dean and courageous, volatile Odetta Holmes. And most confront deadly serial killer Jack Mort.

As the titanic forces gather, a savage struggle between underworld evil and otherworldly enemies threatens to bring an end to Roland's quest for the Dark Tower...

Masterfully weaving dark fantasy and gritty realism. The Drawing of the Three propels readers towards the next chapter.

And the Tower is closer...

The Drawing of the Three starts of where The Gunslinger finishes off. Roland is sleeping on the beach after catching up to the man in black and having his fortune read.
This book starts with Roland losing a few fingers, toes and valuable ammunition to the tide and the lobstrosities. On the verge of death he drags himself up the beach and encounters the first of , presumably, three doors. Enter Eddie Dean, the junkie with a monkey on his back. The Gunslinger was a very strange book but things get weirder still as Roland uses the door to view into, I presume, our world.
This is an interesting section as the western style meets the modern world. I like Eddie, he is charming in his own way. I look forward to seeing how Eddie makes it out of his drug running troubles and if he can help poor Roland.

So last week we encountered Eddie Dean, the junkie, and this week we see him start to redeem himself with a shoot out (for which he is naked), going cold turkey from the heroin and nursing Roland back to health by killing, cooking and feeding him the lobstrosities.
Then we are introduced to Odetta/Detta. So we have a recovering junkie, a cripple and the last gunslinger who is short a few important fingers. Now a very promising start on the quest for the Dark Tower.
I was really liking Eddie Dean and then he goes and freaks out at the possibility of some heroin from Odetta's New York. It set Eddie back in my opinion and undid all the cool points he scored for the naked shot out.

Susan (susanthomas) | 257 comments I finished this book a week or so ago. While I've not been a follower of King, I'm really enjoying this series. Throughly caught up in the Gunslingers quest!
I thought the section on Eddie Dean was the most compelling part of the book, while Odettas's story was the part that made me cringe.

I'm glad to hear you are enjoying it. It's a great series! I think the thing that bother me most about Odetta and Dean is how quickly they "fall in love", which is funny because I never blinked at it the first time I read this series. Anyway, I can see why you would find it cringe worthy!

I'm rereading them for the same reason. I love these books and I've been meaning to reread them so the movie was a good excuse.
