Katie-bree | 6 comments Welcome to Fair Crack of the Whip Proofreading and Editing! Bit of a mouth full, right? But it translates to ‘Give a fair chance or opportunity to someone.’ And that’s exactly what I do!

My name is Katie-bree and I offer a range of editing and proofreading services on most genres, charging competitive rates perfect for someone starting out, self-publishing, or an Indie Author.

I prefer to work on MS Word with Track Changes but can use other methods if required. My services include Developmental Editing, Copy Editing, Proofreading and Critique Services. A brief description of each is included below for reference. If you require more than one of these options then I will happily offer a package price. I generally prefer to provide a free sample of about 10 pages from the center of your manuscript for you to review my work and decide whether I am the editor for you.

I have already worked with many authors, and can provide my resume and references upon request. If you would like to know more or would like a quote please contact me on dontgrumblegiveawhistle@gmail.com

*Critique Evaluations - this is where I read through your story highlighting any potential problem areas and assessing the overall readability. It is similar to a beta-read only more in depth. Usually I review chapter-by-chapter with an overall analysis at the end but can modify to suit.

*Developmental Editing – This is performed while your work is still young. Here, I will collaborate with you to ensure your manuscript develops with the intentions, voice and style that you seek to obtain. I make suggestions on readability, character development, content, use of dialogue and sensory description, narrative voice, pacing, and language. I will work with you answering any queries and brainstorming whenever you require it. I do not correct grammar or spelling at this stage as it is too early in the process to do so correctly.

*Structural Editing/Copy Editing – A Structural Edit is similar to a Developmental Edit only it is performed when you have a manuscript already near completion. I focus on refining your writing, re-ordering and restructuring in order to tighten the story and improve readability, clarity and accuracy. I alert you to any inconsistencies regarding plot, character development and speech. I assist you with your language usage and in creating believable dialogue and plotline. Copy Editing is basically line editing and comes after a Structural Edit. It corrects grammar, punctuation, spelling, word usage, etc. I will suggest alternative words or sentences if I believe they will work towards your purposes better. I can do both of the above edits together, if you are happy with this arrangement and time permits, as the two often go hand in hand and, quite frankly, I can’t ignore a spelling mistake if I see one. However, if you prefer, I can also do one or the other separately. Other people may do this differently.

*Proofreading – I do offer proofreading services as well which is basically a final run through of your manuscript at its completion, to ensure there are no obvious errors and that the mark ups from editing have been applied. I do not like to proofread something that I have just edited, however, as I am usually too close to the work to perform it correctly unless there has been a suitable timeframe included.

Please note that these methods and interpretations are mine alone and some people’s may vary. Hopefully, however, they give you an idea so that you can plan what you would like to do with your story in its next exciting step on the road to publication!!
