Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 973 comments I am wondering if anyone is keeping their current version of Windows and not upgrading to version 10.

I updated Hubby's laptop, but not mine. I'm concerned older programs might get blown away. I didn't notice this happening on my husband's laptop. It did take more than 24 hours to install Windows 10... old system.

J.D. Cunegan (jdcunegan) | 240 comments It keeps asking me to upgrade, but I haven't. I've heard some people having issues with Scrivener after upgrading, so I've decided to stick with Windows 8. I probably won't upgrade to 10 until I buy a whole new laptop.

I'm definitely not upgrading - I'm on Windows 7 still. I disabled auto-update some years back, and never regretted it. It still functions very well, and is still supported by MS.

I have concerns around the recent news articles on the Windows 10 privacy record, and the mandatory updates worried me as well.

J.N. Bedout (jndebedout) | 115 comments If you want nobody to spy on you, you probably have to run Linux--not windows, not mac OS...

I'm deferring windows 10 until I replace my pc.

message 5: by Christina (new)

Christina McMullen (cmcmullen) In all fairness, Windows 10 runs a lot more efficiently than 7 did on my old machine. If I hadn't decided it was thirsty back in January, I'd probably still be milking years out of the old thing.

message 6: by Joe (new)

Joe Jackson (shoelessauthor) I'm not planning to. Windows 11 will be out in a couple of years anyway, so whatever.

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

I tried Windows 10 and hated it. With Windows 7 I've learned over the years where everything is on my computer and how to access it. Windows 10 put a hard-to-penetrate idiot wall full of gadgets and geegaws between me and the stuff on my computer, and it took weeks to figure out how to get around it. I never did overcome it completely.

I like Windows 7; I'm used to it. I know where everything is. Finally I got an unwanted app, and had to reformat my hard drive to get rid of it. Eureka! Windows 7 was back! I gladly kept it.

K.R. Reese (authorkrreese) | 41 comments I had Windows 8 and 8.1 previously then upgraded my entire laptop and it came with Windows 10. I haven't had any problems with it; it runs smoothly compared to 7 and 8.

Angela Maher (angelajmaher) | 43 comments I still use XP, lol, but need to upgrade soon. It's rapidly becoming too clunky.

G.G. (ggatcheson) | 2491 comments I just updated window 7 to window 10 today. Last day to get it free is on the 29th and we all know how costly that will be if we needed after the final date so...

I waited as long as I could. I hate changes. lol

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 973 comments Ken,
Based on what you wrote, I now doubt I upgraded my husband's laptop correctly. I thought I would see a blue background with some random square menu. I do see that, but also see his old wallpaper AND icons. It's like he's got a combo upgrade?

message 13: by Christina (new)

Christina McMullen (cmcmullen) When I upgraded from 7, the only changes were to the start menu and there was an added tray on the right for notifications. It didn't have the app panels anywhere except on the start menu.

Joseph Ferguson | 40 comments I've tried a few times, but it never actually gets there. I'm fine with 7 anyway.

G.G. (ggatcheson) | 2491 comments Yeah there is a problem with some partitions (system reserved partition). Hubby had to fix something on the computer for it to finally go through.

Lisa Emme (Lisa_Emme) | 212 comments I'm afraid to upgrade because I use some freebie aps (notepad++ and J-edit) for my publishing and I can't figure out if they are compatible. Does anyone else use these?

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 973 comments Joseph wrote: "I've tried a few times, but it never actually gets there. I'm fine with 7 anyway."

Joseph, I had that problem Sunday afternoon through Tuesday morning. I had to disable the firewall for it to finally come through.

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 973 comments Lisa wrote: "I'm afraid to upgrade because I use some freebie aps (notepad++ and J-edit) for my publishing and I can't figure out if they are compatible. Does anyone else use these?"

Lisa, So far I only know Gimp does not get blown away when 10 is installed.

However, if anyone has the "starter version" of MS Word and Excel for 2010 ONLY, installing Windows 10 WILL delete the software and even if you have the disc, it is not compatible for some reason (like they want you to spend hundreds for a new version). All other versions of MS Office are compatible.

Ugh. Thanks for mentioning that. I'm using Office 2010. It came loaded on my laptop and I don't even have disks.

i use notepad++.

notepad++ should run on windows 10. very few users have reported issues, but some have:

https://notepad-plus-plus.org/communi...

i'm going to upgrade to win 10 this weekend. i upgraded my mom's laptop back in May and it's working well--although she's a pretty basic user.

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 973 comments Lisa wrote: "Ugh. Thanks for mentioning that. I'm using Office 2010. It came loaded on my laptop and I don't even have disks..."

Lisa, If you have the entire suite of Office 2010, you are all set. If you only have Word and Excel, that's the starter version and will be deleted.

To check what you have, please do the following:
1-Right click on your Word or Excel icon or menu item
2-Click on Properties
3-On the Details tab, look for the file name. If it's Microsoft Word 2010 Starter Version.Ink, that's what you have.

T.L. Clark (tlcauthor) | 727 comments I'm not! I just clicked on the 'turn down the Windows 10 free upgrade' message the other day (it kept trying to install it even though I kept refusing).

a) I don't like anything that pushy
b) I've heard so many people having problems

I simply don't want to lose all my precious files so am sticking with my Windows 8.

Allan Walsh | 64 comments Hi Lisa, I use J-Edit, scribus and Calibre (all free apps) with windows 10 and I have not had any issues so far. I held off on Windows 10 as long as possible because when I previously took the 8.1 free upgrade, none of my drivers worked with it and my laptop got stuck in a continuous loop. I had to pay to revert back to windows 8. Thankfully no issues with windows 10 so far.

Well, at least I know that I have the entire suite. Still not sure about the upgrade though. I guess I'll have to decide soon.

Thanks!

I was planning on making a final decision next week. If you don't mind updating the group about how the upgrade went this weekend, that would be great.

message 28: by G.G. (last edited Jul 22, 2016 09:06AM) (new)

G.G. (ggatcheson) | 2491 comments I've done the upgrade yesterday. I don't like the Microsoft Edge so my hubby reinstalled Internet explorer. Aside from that everything else that I tried worked fine: Office 2003 (which I prefer over 2010 Professional but I checked that version and it still worked. I also checked Gimp 2, Sigil, Calibre, and they loaded without any errors. I haven't checked other programs yet simply because I still need to learn how to navigate this thing. I only tried the ones I had pinned to the task bar and the ones on my desktop.

The hubby tells me he still has to update some drivers (I can't log into our home server for example) and there could be other programs that might give me troubles until then but I haven't found any yet.

Hope this helps.

Lisa wrote: "I was planning on making a final decision next week. If you don't mind updating the group about how the upgrade went this weekend,..."

When I first tried to upgrade I had to do it twice. It takes hours to complete, and you can use your computer during the process. So pick your time carefully. The first time, after it had nearly finished, it aborted, reloaded 7, and told me that I needed to reboot my computer in the safe mode and try again. I did it the next day, and it upgraded, but I had a problem trying to figure out how to get out of safe mode. Then I had to iron out several glitches, and spend several hours getting rid of stuff I didn't want. Wasn't long until I started missing Windows 7.

I didn't like Microsoft Edge, either. I run my browser inside a protective screen called Sandboxie, and it couldn't run Edge at all.

message 31: by J.S. (new)

J.S. Jaeger (jsjaeger) | 73 comments I actually just put the question of whether or not to upgrade out to my Facebook friends because of the nearing expiration date of the free offer. I received mixed responses but have decided to stick with 7 because I'm very comfortable with it. I'd heard so many horror stories about 8 that when Microsoft forced me to upgrade from XP (*sigh*), I jumped on a system that could give me 7. I don't like change> I also have the luck that of anything thing can go wrong with a computer it usually does for me. I'd rather spend my time writing then figuring out how to make 10 do what I need it to do.

G.G. (ggatcheson) | 2491 comments If this can help, my hubby had upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8 and hated it. He thought it was full of bugs, hard to navigate etc so when windows 10 became available for free, he took it, hoping it wouldn't be worse.
From then and on, he kept telling me that 10 was in no way like 8 and that I should go for it. Every time my favorite game would bug, he'd say that it didn't on his computer. However, I sometimes hear him swear after updates...so maybe it's not perfect.

We had been teasing each over the Windows. If he has a problem I tell him I don't and when I do, he tells me he doesn't. Anyway, with 10 not being offered free for much longer, I thought it'd be best to switch. My meager author revenue wouldn't pay for the windows upgrade if it become necessary.

As it happened to you, JS, I was afraid that at some point, MS would force me to update my Win7 and who knows what the new OS will be then. It could be worse than Win10. (Think Win8 for instance. /shivers)

GG You nailed my biggest concern about this debate and that is: when will MS stop supporting 7? Considering my luck with computers, I could see them announcing it next month and then I'd be stuck paying for 10 or something worse. LOL

I heard that support for Windows 7 will be withdrawn within a year...not sure how accurate that is.

Doesn't matter to me though, I'm sticking with Windows 7 as I have no interest in being a product tester for Microsoft!!

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 973 comments J.S. - I have the same luck you do with anything technical, which is why I'm holding back upgrading. I have the same concern as to when they will stop supporting 7 and what that would mean. Would it continue to run or would it no longer be secure and vulnerable to hacks? Decisions, decisions...

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 973 comments Lisa - Glad you have the entire suite. That's great! Good luck making your decision. I'm still undecided. Hubby hasn't used his laptop enough to know how it's working out.

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 973 comments Eldon, Thank you for that information. I didn't know they would disown 7 so soon.

Microsoft stated that Windows 10 would be the last version. No Windows 11. The fact that they are now moving to the monthly subscription fees for Windows 10, seems to support this.

So does that mean that everyone who got Windows 10 "for free" will soon have to pay a monthly subscription just to keep it?

For now it's only the enterprise version and up. Who knows what the future will bring.

G.G. (ggatcheson) | 2491 comments Just a side note. Make sure your motherboard supports the new OS. I am lucky mine is the same as the hubby because the company who makes it removes their drivers for windows 10 from their website (ASUS). Since the hubby updated his computer long before mine, he somehow got them and he'll be able to install them on my computer.

(Yeah, older computers but still runs better and faster than many of the newer ones so why would I change? :P )

Most things still work fine but Win10 is slowly removing programs that don't support it so...

I must agree! : D

Sam (Rescue Dog Mom, Writer, Hugger) (sammydogs) | 973 comments Early this morning (1 AM) I started the upgrade for Windows 10. According to the requirements test, my system is compatible. Now, (4:40 PM) I learned that Dell does not support our system having Windows 10. What does that mean? We will no longer receive updates from Dell for driver downloads. Now I'm worried about programs not working! Really concerned and unhappy. >: (

I upgraded a while back when it first started asking me to upgrade. I lost my Live mail, and they later replaced it, but I also lost my printer driver. Now that's driving me nuts. I'm about to call Lexmark. My printer is quite new, I don't want to buy another one.
