Annie Arcane (anniearcane) @Mr Tim: I can't say if it was a tongue that slipped but something sure did... *bad girl smirk*

It's official. This thread has been ruined.

Nik Krasno | 19865 comments Empires are ruined and timid states appear on their debris...

Yeah, not connected to anything, I know, and I haven't even been drinking today

Tara Woods Turner | 2063 comments Literary debauchery. Wilde would have been proud!
As for texts and emails in books I hate to say it but E.L. James actually managed it nicely.

Nik Krasno | 19865 comments I feel I can reinstate my thread on use of emoticons and emojis in writing from elsewhere, especially in well-researched scientific works -:)

Annie Arcane (anniearcane) @Miss Tara: re "E.L. James actually managed it nicely."

*grumbles* True... *grumbles*

@Mr Nik. Your smileys always make me, um, smile XD

Dude got stabbed in the forehead but he's still happy. Or...maybe that's WHY he's happy... *GASP*

Hugs,
Ann

Steven Moore Tara and Tim,
Wilde's story is on a par with computer pioneer Alan Turing's. Wilde is another famous Irish writer and figures prominently in Dublin's Writers Museum (see pic at my website), poked fun at the British upper class, and was persecuted for his homosexuality. Of course, in some societies, he would have lost his head. We have come a long way in respecting the rights of others, but there are still battles to be won.

Nik Krasno | 19865 comments What's readers' concern, after all? -:)

message 59: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8079 comments As a new reader of this thread - I went back to the beginning - I'm very concerned . . . that there's not more of it. Where are you guys?

message 60: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 19865 comments What about you: do you try to cover major bestsellers or look for books that would most certainly suit your literary taste?

message 61: by G.R. (new)

G.R. Paskoff (grpaskoff) | 258 comments Nik, I commend you on trying to kick-start this thread, and setting it back on track, but after reading through it from the beginning I can't imagine possibly recapturing the wackiness that ensued in the first 60 or so posts!

message 62: by Papaphilly (new)

Papaphilly | 5045 comments The only true concern I have as a reader is that political correctness kills good writing. I am also very concerned that schools will bow the said correctness and kill young minds and the exposure to great literature.

Philip (phenweb) I was thinking about writing a book about how a TV reality star decides to become President despite a history of bad behaviour a cast of dubious friends. After a tension filled election a nasty virus tries to wipe out large parts of the electorate, whilst the incumbent tries to get re-elected. meanwhile political discourse creeps towards civil war.

I decided not to as its too far fetched and unrealistic.

Edit: would any reader read it?

Merci. I hope we can not only recapture but surpass the wacky spirit here or elsewhere :)

That's a fair concern and I hope it'll never deteriorate to crumble under the PC pressure

Kinda happened in Ukraine. The desperate electorate fell in love with the movie image of a modest teacher becoming a president and fighting corruption and exerted overwhelming support, when the actor ran for the real thing.
As of the readers: they enthuse in mysterious ways :) Sounds like an interesting project and if you have a muse to do it, why not?

Bah, even as fiction, it would too far fetched. 8^)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 8079 comments I'm with you, G.R. If you read the thread from the beginning - it's pretty amazing.

message 69: by G.R. (new)

G.R. Paskoff (grpaskoff) | 258 comments I probably keep to my literary likes 90% of the time, and even then only after carefully researching them based on previous reader reviews and weeding out the reviews that are just fluff or vinegar. Occasionally I will stray from this formula and sometimes I am pleasantly surprised but often not. I almost never opt for the massively popular book because I don't seem to share the same tastes as the masses.

Land sakes, Miss Annie! Where'd y'all get to?

message 70: by Marie (new)

Marie | 643 comments That wackiness was cool in the beginning of the thread! Seems like it was fun times! Us newer members are sorry that we missed the party! :)

As far as what the thread was truly about - I tend to stick to my genres mainly as I have authors that I am familiar with - it is rare I branch out into the unknown. If that does happen it is normally something that has been recommended by a friend then I will try it out - other than that I will stick to "familiar territory". :)
