This is an aspect that makes the parties so interesting to me. Face to face folks are polite and sometimes even fawning, then they walk away (or think in the case of the narrator) and become judgmental and catty. Totally consistent with social gatherings I've experienced all my life.

Good! I'm not just imagining things then. :-)

I'm surprised that M. Vaugoubert is quite blatantly checking out the young men with Charlus at the party, given that he's in constant fear of being outed. I guess they're talking obscurely enough for the others not to know what they're actually doing.

Dave (adh3) | 779 comments I think the point is that now that the narrator's consciousness has been raised by his observation of Charlus and Jupien, he notices a whole new "level" of interaction between characters he failed to observe before.

Yep, that's how I took it as well, Dave.

Dave (adh3) | 779 comments Its nice to have at least the tree of us "on"at the same time. Enjoyed this exchange. I've got to go get ready to go to my local book club monthly meeting. Today I'm talking about ISOLT, whether the rest of them like it or not! lol

Was that like the Monty Python Summarise Proust Competition.?

Dave (adh3) | 779 comments I've heard about that but never watched it. I love Monty Python and bet it will be even funnier having read Proust's novel.

None of the contestants get past the first volume so there are no spoilers :-) The link takes you to YouTube.

Haha, just watched it! I love Monty Python! Didn't know this existed. Thanks, Jonathan!

Dave (adh3) | 779 comments I just watched it! Hilarious, but I couldn't understand much because they were talking/singing so fast. Is there a text of the script? Don't look it up, I can search for it on Google.
