Iain B | 2 comments OK - So SPOILER ALERTS all over... I'm going to roughly detail a few short stories in a book that I can't remember the name of

1. Set in the future where jobs a very scarce, a candidate tries to get a job as a post office clerk via a Virtual Reality Interview with increasingly hard customers to test his resolve. He fails and has to tell his wife.

2. Set in the future a man and wife have had two children, one newly born, only one is permitted by law. To balance the books a 'murderer' is released from prison to kill the father, or the father can kill the murderer. Attack happens in their house.

3. The Ultimate Weapon. Father tells family the story of the Ultimate Weapon, the damage it caused, how it changed everything in warfare etc at the end the reveal is that they are sitting in a cave and the weapon is a bow and arrow.

4. Organ harversters appear as soon as someone dies, if they are not wearing an opt-out necklace.

5. A man harnesses free power in the form of a radio. A racist policeman arrests him and crushers the radio.

Thanks!!

Iain

Iain, I moved your request to the Unsolved folder because you're looking for a specific book.

What year did you read this science fiction collection/anthology? Are these short stories written by one or multiple authors?

Andy | 2124 comments The ultimate weapon story is Harry Harrison's "The Final Battle" I think. Here's a list of where that story has been collected http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cg... - one of them might be your book

Andy | 2124 comments And I think the post office one is also by Harrison "The Fairly Civil Service" - which means the book is likely Prime Number Prime Number

Andy | 2124 comments This discussion of Harrison's work http://andrewdarlington.blogspot.com/... mentions the population control story "A Criminal Act" and the free power device story "Mute Milton," both of which are also in Prime Number.
