Kirk, for you I choose Brinshore because I enjoyed Emma and Elizabeth by the same author and had forgotten about this one. Look forward to your review!
Kirk I read Brinshore some time ago. I'll be very interested to hear what you think of it. I haven't seen that many reviews for it.
Debbie, I am SO SORRY it took me a few days!!!! I closed on my house and moved in this weekend so I have been busy from sun up to sun down since Friday and fell asleep if I sat down!!! Okay, enough if that. I am recommending Searching for Captain Wentworth by Jane Odiwe. I've that on my list for awhile and haven't gotten to it yet!!!! I'm interested in your take of it.
Thank you for your recommendation of Mistaking Her Character, I believe you or someone warned me I'd be reading it and I'll get to it!!! I can handle most stories, just better start now if I need to take a short break!!!! Lol
Abigail, yes it is!!! I have boxes everywhere. It will take a long time to get everything like I want it!!! Though parents are helping!!

@Erika Congrats! When's the party(virtual)? :)
@Debbie I hope you enjoy the book! I certainly did.
Kirk, I will have to send out invites when my brain and body function again!!! I am so physically and mentally exhausted and that is coming off a weekend!!! Lol
I moved house ten years ago Erika and I'm still getting over it!!!!! My brother (who was helping with the move) said there should be a law against how many books a person can keep. This, after he nearly threw his back out handling the countless boxes of books we had. He's not a reader so wouldn't understand :):)
After I moved out of my parents' house at age 21, I went through a 9-year stretch where I moved 10 times. But none of those were as difficult as when my husband and I moved in 2007 from a home we'd lived in for 12 years! Exhausting!!! But exciting, too. Congrats, Erika, and know that the box phase won't last forever and you'll have years of joy living there. Congratulations and felicitations!
Debbie wrote: "And thank you for the book selection. I'm sure I'm going to enjoy Searching for Captain Wentworth!"it is my favorite by Jane Odiwe. ! Especially if you are fans of Persuasion.
I've read 7 of Jane's books, all 4- and 5-star reads for me, so I'm sure I'll enjoy this one, too. And Persuasion is my second-favorite of Jane Austen's books (after P&P). Win-win!
Could I get someone to pick two books from the following list for me to kick-start my August reading? I have really been neglecting some books I have had on my TBR pile on my Kindle and need to get serious about it. I think 2 will be a good starting point. I will say right here that I am worst about reading the non-P&P variations, modern P&P and those based on the other characters in P&P. So, I am going to start with those:
My BFF
The Ballad of Gregoire Darcy
The Deception at Lyme: Or, The Peril of Persuasion
Mercy's Embrace: So Rough a Course
The Importance of Being Emma
The Pursuit of Mary Bennet: A Pride & Prejudice Novel
Barb wrote: "Could I get someone to pick two books from the following list for me to kick-start my August reading? I know now Sophia picks people to determine each other's books and I should have done this before today. But, I still need help. Any volunteers? I would just love some input. Thanks, all!
Barb wrote: "Could I get someone to pick two books from the following list for me to kick-start my August reading? If you like Barb I'll pick The Deception at Lyme for you to read. I opted out of the pick this month as I had to get a handle on my TBR pile as it was threatening to take over the house. I'm sure the others won't mind you joining in on the chat on the thread for the August challenge. They're a lovely bunch.
Hi Barb! I read My BFF on AHA and really enjoyed it. The Emma story that Anji suggested is an excellent read too :)
Okay - two for the Importance of Being Emma - so that is a go. Debbie suggested, Longbourn's Songbird, so I am starting that, and I will then do the Deception at Lyme. When time allows, I will start on the Pursuit of Mary Bennet. You women are wonderful! Thanks for the great input!
Sheila wrote: "Deborah, there were a number of good ones there on your list. How about if I give you Side by Side, Apart by Ann Galvia I read it as WIP when it was entitled Bruises and then as i..."
Sheila,
Thank you for such an excellent choice. I loved Side By Side Apart. I felt so bad for Darcy and the kids, and Elizabeth. Mrs. Bennett was her usual obtuse self. Now, onto Chaos Comes to Longbourn. I have been also eagerly anticipating reading this book.
Debbie
OH, that is an excellent one also. I know you will enjoy it. Glad you also enjoyed Side by Side: Apart.
I have finished Longbourn's Songbird and The Deception at Lyme. Thanks for the suggestions - both were 5*! Now on to Importance of Being Emma....
Meanwhile, I'm struggling my way through Searching for Captain Wentworth, as anyone who sees my updates can tell. The romance between the two current day characters isn't clicking for me, the time shift stuff is weird because I'm not sure how much is Sophie and how much is Sophia (and neither is the character herself, apparently), and all the historical detail just drives me nuts. Definitely a "pearls before swine" situation, because I know how many of you love this book, but I gotta say... it's not grabbing me at all. I'm 61% through it now, and I'm still waiting to get interested.
Sometimes that happens. I still feel badly that a particular book and its sequels did not hit it off with me after several other whom I respect loved them. C'est la Vie.
Good to know you got two 5*s, Barb! I was really impressed with Longbourn’s Songbird, too, and am looking forward to The Deception at Lyme.
Debbie, I'm sorry Searching for Captain Wentworth is not grabbing you like we hoped!!! I had good hopes for it, but may have to reconsider.
Debbie, I would add that I just finished Mistaking Her Character and LOVED IT!!! Maybe it was because of all the warnings I got on how despicable Mr Bennet was, or that I now remember reading some bits and pieces and Maria Grace was posting it, but it wasn't as cringe-worthy as Implacable Resentment in my opinion. Especially since I read it in less than 24hrs!! I will get my review written and posted soon!!
Erika, if you're a North and South fan, you might like Searching for Captain Wentworth more than me. This is very heavy with room and setting details. And FASHION! I feel like Mr. Bennet! Please, no more descriptions of lace and dresses! Some readers eat all this stuff up and enjoy the historical deets, but I am not one of them. If you check out other reviews for it, you'll find that the romance grabbed others more than me, also. So I wouldn't discourage anyone else from reading it. Just ain't my cup of tea. I hope to finish it today and move on to something I'll like better.
So glad you loved Mistaking Her Character! It was a 5-star read for me, so I hoped you'd enjoy it, too, especially after our "chat" about Implacable Resentment. Sounds like you must be starting to settle into your new place if you actually found time to read! Congratulations again!
Erika-you've moved in?? Am delighted to hear it!! Heartiest congrats!! Wishing you the very best of happiness in your new home!
I have been in my home for just over a week now, finally got back to the gym last night (hadn't gone in 2 weeks) and am trying to get my reading in. Only issues is that my house will take forever to organize (per my OCD tastes), and I am so far behind on writing my reviews. Will work on that tonight!!! House is a WIP!!! I love my house and being in it!!
Erika-no matter that your home is a WIP-it's your HOME.....four little letters of the alphabet that mean so much, that everybody needs and is yours to do with as you please!! Think about that!!! You should be so proud of yourself!!
Take your time. I always found I needed a full month, without going to work, to get my house in order. So if you are going out to work on top of organizing you have a time before you are settled in. But as they say "Home is where the heart is" so make it all your own system. Congratulations.
Debbie - what I am most impressed by is how you can pinpoint what it is you don't like about Searching for Captain Wentworth. Surprisingly, or not, for me, that is the hardest thing. I can be reading and not really getting engaged, but cannot always put my finger on what it is that is causing the problem. This is what makes you a good reviewer! Just finished Importance of Being Emma, and although I enjoyed it, something didn't sit right with me, and I am puzzling it through as I write the review.
OK, finished my August Pick-It-For-Me. My review of Searching for Captain Wentworth is posted. Beautiful writing, but you already know I didn't like how much it delved into descriptions, and I didn't find either the current day romance or the foray back into history particularly engaging. I gave it 2 stars.
Have you read other books by this author Debbie? I'm just wondering whether it was this particular book you didn't like or if her work just isn't your cup of tea?
LOL. My review actually starts by stating how much I've enjoyed Jane Odiwe's other books: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...Definitely this particular book.
Have you read it yet, Ceri?
@ Debbie, I'm sorry you didn't enjoy SFCW as much as Jane Odiwe's other books. It was chosen for me as my Someone Pick It For Me in June and I totally enjoyed it. But, hey, life would be very boring if we all enjoyed the same stuff and to to the same extent.@Ceri. I guess time slip is something you either like or don't. As I'm a big sci-fi geek, in addition to wearing my Janeite bonnet, anything that has elements of both will usually go down well with me.
I felt like I was reading a different book, with all those 4- and 5-star reviews! But, as you say, we're all different.
Re. the time slip, some I like and some I don't. I don't really have hard and fast rules on it. The other Jane Odiwe books I've read had elements of it and I enjoyed them both. However, another book I read with time travel elements I really didn't like, so I suppose for me time travel in itself might not be an issue, but the other parts of the story and the circumstances around it make all the difference.
