Did you get a partner? I wanted to join in, but Manju told me... mods will be reserved for late comers..
But then am scared to be your partner, as I am sure of being suggested a fantasy from my shelves.. my last partner was also a fantasy freak...
And Manju herself sees to it that I am on a steady diet of fantasies :P

And I will retaliate by choosing the dullest contemporary from Mridupawan's 270 odd numbering books. >_<

Book 1 for you is The Final Empire
I'm aghast that you haven't started it yet. But when you do start, make sure you've the time to read the trilogy back to back.
Or, you can read book 2 i.e., Touch
This is not a fantasy which you're trying to avoid. This is one author who I absolutely love other than Jodi Picoult. So go for it.
And since I played fair, be kind to me.

I don't have boring books in my tbr :D

If there is time, I will finish off the other book too (Touch)/

I'm going to read The Shadow of the Wind. I'd keep Martian for some other day as I already watched the movie first like an idiot

Mort it is. Reading all the Discworld books is my plan, too. BTW, I'm following this guide to the reading order. It might come in handy for you, too.

1. The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins : This book is a landmark book in the sensation novel genre and one of the first mystery books ever written.
2. The Alienist by Caleb Carr : This book explores the development of the field of psychological profiling of suspects. So this book will be good.
