Book synopsis
The Matrix is a world within the world, a global consensus- hallucination, the representation of every byte of data in cyberspace . . .

Case had been the sharpest data-thief in the business, until vengeful former employers crippled his nervous system. But now a new and very mysterious employer recruits him for a last-chance run. The target: an unthinkably powerful artificial intelligence orbiting Earth in service of the sinister Tessier-Ashpool business clan. With a dead man riding shotgun and Molly, mirror-eyed street-samurai, to watch his back, Case embarks on an adventure that ups the ante on an entire genre of fiction.

Hotwired to the leading edges of art and technology, Neuromancer ranks with 1984 and Brave New World as one of the century's most potent visions of the future.

Beth | 503 comments I will try to join this, but I won't have the book for a few days.

Is there an end date for the buddy read? How soon do I have to finish it to join?

I don't think we will be reading very fast. First, it's too hot to read fast. And second, it's not a super-easy book to read :) You can join whenever you're ready!

Kirby (kirbym) | 232 comments Woohoo! Officially starting today! Can't wait!

message 8: by Anna (new)

Anna Nesterovich | 189 comments Or more like yesterday :) How much are we going to read in one day? It seems there are only three of us here for now. What do we want do discuss right away?
My library lost the book :( So I'm waiting for an interlibrary loan now. Or I can listen, since I have an audio version, but it's not great. How could they loose such a book! And the only copy in this town

message 9: by Kirby (new)

Kirby (kirbym) | 232 comments How could they?!

I'm not sure how much we should read... I have the audio and a hard copy but I prefer the hard copy version too. As far as breaking it down, I'm not sure what's easiest... It's 23 chapters so try to average 5 chapters a week? 10? Somewhere in the middle and 1 chapter a day? I'm happy to match the pace that's easiest for everyone.

message 10: by Anna (new)

Anna Nesterovich | 189 comments 5 chapters a week seems reasonable. As soon as I get the book :) it shoud arrive tomorrow or in two days at the latest.

message 11: by Anna (new)

Anna Nesterovich | 189 comments Does it equal approximately 12 pages a day? Sounds good to me.

message 12: by Kirby (new)

Kirby (kirbym) | 232 comments My copy is 271 pages so if we only do a chapter a day it comes out to a little under 12 pages a day.

message 13: by Anna (new)

Anna Nesterovich | 189 comments I asked for the 2004 edition, which is much longer :) I hope it's not longer because there're more words in there :D

message 14: by Kirby (new)

Kirby (kirbym) | 232 comments No my copy has pretty small print. It's one of those more compact paperbacks. I'm sure yours is the normal size version. I have this version: https://www.amazon.com/Neuromancer-Wi...

Anna Nesterovich | 189 comments Is it comfortable to read?

message 16: by Kirby (new)

Kirby (kirbym) | 232 comments Yea, I like the smaller size because I can fit it in most of my handbags. If you click on the book photo for "look inside" from that page and switch the tabs at the top (I think it defaults to kindle view) to print book and scroll down you'll see what it looks like.

Anna Nesterovich | 189 comments I got the book! Though the small pocket edition :( you never know with an interlibrary loan. The letters are too small for me, but I started reading anyway :)

message 18: by Kirby (new)

Kirby (kirbym) | 232 comments Woohoo! I'll start tonight then! Yay!

message 19: by Kirby (new)

Kirby (kirbym) | 232 comments How's your progress? What a dense read! I started yesterday and I'm about halfway through the first chapter (distracted by another book I'm reading). Think we can chat about the first chapter soon?

message 20: by Anna (new)

Anna Nesterovich | 189 comments I just finished the first chapter. And I also got a bigger edition after I complaint to the library that I can't read those tiny letters :)

Beth, are you here? You said you wanted to read it with us. Did you start the book?

Reading it I got side-tracked lots of time, trying to visualize what's going on and ending up googling coffin hotels for example :) I knew in theory that they exist, but I never saw one, so youtube was a great help. Though the ones on youtube are stacked two high, much less crowded than in the book O_o

What are your thoughts so far?

message 21: by Anna (new)

Anna Nesterovich | 189 comments Kirby? Beth? Somebody? Anybody! It is a very silent discussion.

I had been stuck at the airport for 5 hours yesterday, so I finished chapter 6 already. Oh, he lost me so many times. So far I managed to find my way back to the story each time.

message 22: by Kirby (new)

Kirby (kirbym) | 232 comments Hi Anna! So sorry! I'm not very good at posting over the weekend - weekdays are easier for me. I'm a bit behind. I just finished chapter one. And I'm a little lost myself. But it sounds like based on what you said, I'll find my footing again in the next chapter hopefully? I brought it to work to read over lunch so I'll get a good hour in. Hopefully I'll make some good progress so we can talk details :)

message 23: by Anna (new)

Anna Nesterovich | 189 comments Brought it to work!?!? I would nevet be able to return to work aftet a lunch with a book :)
Looking forward to details. Remind me later that I want to discuss horses from chapter 7 :)

message 24: by Kirby (new)

Kirby (kirbym) | 232 comments Hahaha, oh I have a kindle I LEAVE at work! I need it! It's the best way to escape whatever I'm working on and return all refreshed. It does take a lot, though, not to want to continue reading all afternoon haha.

And I just realized I have a day off tomorrow so hopefully I'll get the opportunity to catch up!

Horses. Got it. (Horses?! Wat?!)

message 25: by Kirby (new)

Kirby (kirbym) | 232 comments Just an update - I have 30 more pages to hit Part 3. Assuming my lunch goes uninterrupted, I should be able to start talking horses later this afternoon :)

message 26: by Anna (new)

Anna Nesterovich | 189 comments :)

message 27: by Anna (new)

Anna Nesterovich | 189 comments I too have an update - stuck at an airport again ( though hopefully not for long, at least not like the last time). Finishing chapter 12 by the end of the day.

Kirby, why do you think Gibson felt necessary to give us that horse detail? Or rather a ton of information about the world. The book is not full of details that not totally related to what's going on. Except for this one.

message 28: by Anna (new)

Anna Nesterovich | 189 comments It seems the discussion stoped before starting :(
