I am suffering from writers brainstorming block

Hello, everyone it is Vixen 201, again, hope everyone is doing ok. I don't know if I post this or not. My friend told me in February 2013 that much as I read books, I should write one and its been over a year and I still haven't gone anywhere . I have got my reading passion back. I am already read 13 books out of 25 books goals for 2014. But far as getting focused & doing my brainstorming for my crime novel, I can't do it. But the funny thing about it, I am doing research & reading materials on how I should write my novel. Any tips, thanks, Vixen 201 :-)

I don't know where you are in the process, but I would do two things.
1) Write an outline
2) Make a long synopsis. Imagine you are telling a very interested friend about the book. They want to know how it begins, whats in the middle, and how it ends.

Another thing I do is to write an important scene and limit it to 500 words. That forces me to get to the crux of the scene, and from there I can write backwards (what led to this point?) and forwards (what was the result of this scene?)

I write fantasy... so I am not completely sure this will apply but I will give you my method.

Because I do fantasy I create my own world. Lore, history, language, characters, events, places, purposes.... and the list goes on! Most of these things will never enter a book in any significant way...but some of them will.

So if I find writing hard I start daydreaming. Thinking of these things. I might create a new town, figure out it's economic system. Why is the town there in the first place? does anything specific take place in that town? Who lives there? What kind of lifestyle do these people live? etc...

Or I might create a new plant.... something poisonous...or maybe an herb that heals. Give the plant a little back story (No it's not weird) how has it been used? who significant in history has used it? how was it discovered for the uses? etc...


World creation, in my opinion, is one of the best ways to get re-inspired.
