I gifted The Veiled Throne and The God is Not Willing to myself if that counts. :)
You?

December is weird for me - my birthday, chanukah, and I married a methodist, so I get books for all 3 occasions from the family.Catherine the Great & Potemkin: the imperial love affair - From my wife because we watch "The Great" and I'm a former history major.
Tiamat's Wrath -from my in-laws -gotta catch up on the expanse!
The New York Times Cooking No-Recipe Recipes - yum! also from my wife
Black Knight: Curse of the Ebony Blade also from my wife
Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City also from my wife
The Storyteller: Tales of Life and Music from my sister
Empire of the Vampire from my in-laws. go figure :)

I got two books this year:
1984 - George Orwell
Fahrenheit 451 - Ray Bradbury
That and I have credit to get one more book at the local bookstore whenever I go later this week. I'm not sure what I'll get as my third book however. A part of me wants to get the first book in Sanderson's skyward series, but another part of me wants to get something non-fiction for my physical collection.
@Emily I got a copy of Noor for Christmas too! Only book I got as a present, so @Jenna, I bought myself several presents too. Leviathan Wakes, Jade Legacy, and the Veiled Throne. Plus a haul from the used bookstore. And the online used bookstore (https://www.betterworldbooks.com/). I may have gone overboard...I gave a lot of books for the holidays, and they all hit well, which was exciting! I gave copies of Spinning Silver, Kings of the Wyld, Cloud Cuckoo Land, A Deadly Education, Penric's Progress, Redshirts, and Three Parts Dead. Everyone seemed excited to read them.
All of y'all's acquisitions look really interesting!
@Julian--I really enjoyed Skyward (but then I really enjoy most things). It's so exciting to get to choose a new book! I'm sure you will choose something awesome.
And happy post-holidays pre-New Year everyone!
@Nirkatze Would you recommend Skyward over The Rithmatist? I think those are the only Sanderson series that I haven't read.
I'd mostly recommend Skyward more than Rithmatist, if only because Sanderson is actively writing 4 Skyward books and some co-authored novellas...
Rithmatist functions as a standalone, but Sanderson has had an idea for a sequel for like a decade now, and no time/inclination to write it, due to other options and responsibilities...

Choosing which to buy and own. I've actually never step foot inside my local library, just rely on whatever I find that they have on libby.

There was a while where I wasn't using the library because I was too busy to keep up with the books I bought. Once I got into audiobooks, I had more time to 'read' while I got other stuff done. That rocketed my reading to where it used to be and beyond. lol Now I'm about the rate I was as a kid and a beyond. As for purchasing, I'd go with Skyward between those two choices. Like Iain said, Sanderson is actively writing that series.
I pretty much did the same a while back. Went to get a library card for libby/overdrive and haven't stepped foot again since.I'll admit Libby has been a game changer for me. I got it sometime last summer and the amount of reading I've done has skyrocketed since then.
As for rithmatist vs skyward, there's like a 20 week hold for skyward while rithmatist is readily available on libby so that made my decision on which to end up purchasing easy.
@Nirkatze let me know if you'd be up for a buddy read for that sometime this year (past January/February, I don't want to over-commit). Also those are all great ones to gift. I'm always hesitant to gift books because most of the people I know don't have the same tastes as me, and I never know if they'll like it.@Soo since 2014 I've been almost exclusively audio, but I do want to get more into reading this year. We'll see how that works lol
Also, you know that feeling you get when you finish a book that you've been reading for months and it was actually really good? That's the best. Just finished Space Opera and I ended up loving it after not liking the beginning too much (which is why it was taking me months. Also the fact that I read, read it.)
Should I try to hit 50 books read before the new year or should I purposely stall and start the new year with 3 books read?

Is anyone else having problems with the site... I've been having problems all week/month/year, but it's been getting worse...
Slow load times, frequent errors (either oops with the fake book quote or page unavailable / timeout errors)... it's really annoying...

It's been very slow for me today, and I've frequently gotten messages that GR is taking too long to load. I think a lot of people sign in to update their New Year's challenge. I can't think of anything that would account for other times of the month/year though.

Yes its always the same on 1st January. Half the time you just can't get on goodreads as they are overloaded.I have noticed it happen a few times in the past week or so I think maybe people were just using it more to catch up with updates they've let slide before the year ends 🤷♀️
Anymore, I feel like... if it's not one thing, it's another...
1) January 1st overload
2) GR decided it's a slow time and they can take down half the site for a week/month to "improve stuff"
3) There are just bugs floating around for months/years now, that they don't seem to have any intention of fixing... or it's on purpose to prevent other annoying-to-them things...

The site has been working fine for me for the most part. There has been the occasional instance where a page didn't want to load and I'd have to refresh but for the most part everything has been working fine.
How did I just KNOW the stupid 2022 Reading Challenge in my notification feed broke GR again?... it's like I know this site too well... haven't been getting comment updates for 2+ hours now :(

Does anyone else find that the more books that they give ratings to the higher your standards become over time? Some of the recent books that I’ve read would probably have been a 4-5 star in the past but I now view as just a 3 star.

Goodreads always changing things... catering to mobile, usually... they were getting so much pushback from desktop/browser users that they shutdown the Feedback group a few years ago... I feel like the site has been going downhill ever since...

Oh, definitely...
Ratings are so ephemeral... the first time you see a plotline/trope, it's new and great... the 5th/50th, it's not as shiny anymore...
Leads to some books getting higher ratings, because you're new to a genre and didn't know any better... and others getting lower ratings, because you've seen it all before, now...
Not being in the right mood for a book can also tarnish it's rating...

Does anyone else get really cheesed of when they register a new book they're about to read here only to find out it's book 2 or three of a series they've never read? Publishers, if a book is part of a series, please print it somewhere on the cover!!

OUCH... don't books include that somewhere in the first couple pages, with a listing of other books by author / in series... i remember that, as a kid, but these days I find all my books online, so something usually warns me...

I always make sure to check on goodreads first before getting a book to avoid that. There have been times however where I was burned at the bookstore clearance isle where they sell book 2 but not book 1 lol.

What really bugs me is when it's not just Book 1 in a series, but only Part 1 of 2, and not even a complete story, and not labeled either!
(Obviously graphic novels would be an exception to the complete-story expectation, but those are usually clearly labeled.)

Yes, definitely. The more I've read in general the harder I've become on books.
Ha, GR has been doing downhill since Amazon bought it. =P I guess we should work on making a Discord channel or something. Though, that part isn't great for record keeping. I like the interface for general look on GR for that. At least we can import/export our shelves. So, it's not too hard to import into other GR like websites.
Have you all heard of storygraph? I've been meaning to check it out eventually. They even have buddy reads built in to the app apparently
