I wish I could send you some of our rain. It's been raining buckets here for two weeks now. I'm really sorry about your sister, and no need to apologize for the long post. It's completely understandable that you need to talk about this stuff.

I'm so sorry to hear about your sister! I understand how this must be a very difficult situation for you and things like reading can become hard to be enthusiastic about!
Never feel bad about writing long posts here, sometimes even talking to some weird booknerds on the internet can help and we're here for you!
Sending strenght and comfort for that difficult time 😘

message 4503: by Bea (new)

Bea | 2050 comments Another topic I've been thinking about the last few days and with sommer on the doorstep it's becoming very important again: sun protection.

A few weeks ago I noticed that one of my moles had changed. I have very fair skin and had already had several moles surgically removed, just to be sure.
I went to the dermatologist immediately and this week I got the news that it's actually an early stage of skin cancer. The good news is that the melanoma was still so tiny that it's highly unlikely it will spread. Today everything was removed and now I'm sitting here with a bandaged arm.

I've never been sun bathing and tended to stay in the shade in summer because I get sunburnt very quickly and get dizzy from the sun anyway. But still, I did not always apply sunscreen when I was outside and the occasional sunburn 'happened'. So even if you think there is only a small risk, it won't be 'that bad' and only older people who have been sunbathing carelessly their whole life will be at risk.
No. Everybody is at risk, pale people like myself even more so, obviously.
I know I'm going to be a lot more careful with sun protection from now on!
Just wanted to share that, be safe and cover up and if you notice skin changes, visit a dermatologist asap!

Oh Saar, I'm so very sorry to hear that. Know you can always come talk with us here if needed.

Like Tammie, my area has had tons and tons of rain this year. Wish I could ship you some.

Thanks Bea for the reminder. I admit now that it's finally warming up, especially having been cooped up inside for months on end, the urge is strong to go outside and bask in the sun. I feel so deprived, but that's good to keep in mind.

I'm relieved to hear that it's in the early stage! People don't always wear sun protection, but it's so important. Glad you've got a look at it and got it removed.

message 4508: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 3099 comments Thanks everyone for the kind and warming words. If only I could see what was coming ahead, but I try to stay strong...

Well, some rain will be so welcoming! Besides the corona crisis on the news, that's the new hot (haha...) topic now. I'tll be warmer next week and there's code red for nature parks. That means high fire risks.

Veronica (readingonthefly) | 3613 comments Josh Gad has been (Zoom) hosting movie cast reunions on Youtube to raise money for various charities and this weekend he had the cast of The Lord of the Rings movies. It's 50 minutes long but I wanted more. I adore this cast! I can't believe it's been close to 20 years since these movies were released.

Mel | 2360 comments Thanks for sharing, Veronica!
When I read it had been 20 years though, I literally cried out, "Noo...!" in disbelief. Like, 12 maybe? Surely not 20.
(In my head, the reversal works better: "十二、 not 二十" )

These protests being hijacked by rioters, are getting serious...

A bunch of Wal-marts & Sam’s Clubs were looted over the weekend... so last night they sent all the after-hours workers home at 6pm when the stores closes on Sundays to customers... and blocked the glass doors with pallets of water bottles...

Starting tomorrow morning, openers don’t come in until sunrise/6am, instead of 4am... management is playing the rest by ear... more protests scheduled today at 3pm at the state capitol building...

I’m off the next 2 days... need to see what things are like Thursday morning...

Sounds scary, Iain. Stay safe. <3

It's so annoying that the peaceful protesters are being tarred with the same brush as rioters and looters. :(

This is what I get for letting events conspire against me:

1) All this talk of riots
2) Left my dehumidifier running after I got home from work yesterday
3) Went to bed

Result: around 3am, the dehumidifier's reservoir maxed out... apparently, this causes the dehumidifier to make a beep 5-10 times, sounding similar to a smoke alarm... I'm half asleep, vision blurry, and think there's a fire in my apartment building...

Nothing to see here :D ... I never DID get back to sleep... luckily 3am is pretty close to when I usually get up for work, even if this is the beginning of my weekend...

Thanks, Beena :)

It's very serious what is happening in the States and it's sad that the rioters are setting the real message of the peaceful protests in a bad daylight.

+1 what Choc said about the recognition for hard work.

It's so annoying that the peaceful protesters are being tarred with the same brush as rioters and looters. :(

I'm following the headlines too. That's true, Siobhan.
Everything sucks right now...the weather isn't helping.
Stay safe, everyone!!!

And I saw that cast too, Ron, at least it popped up on my YouTube feed and I marked it but haven't watched it yet. Mostly nowadays I watch simple, silly things... puppy videos...

*announcement voice*
Aaaaaaaaand noooow, the theme song for "these troubled times" performed by M. Carey... :D

My friends, I am thinking of you all especially those facing harm during riots among all the other difficulty this year. I hope you’ve all been able to protest peacefully.

To our black patrons: we love you and stand with you always. Black lives matter.

I’ll be updating some stuff this afternoon after I get some sleep. Sorry I was on “vacation” for two weeks getting some things done and being a substitute teacher 😂. I’ll also be posting a resource list of anti racism books for our members as well as a thread for recommendations for black authors as well.

message 4541: by Bea (new)

Bea | 2050 comments From the category random but cool news:

My cousin knows somebody who works in a chocolate factory. They were taking care of all the leftover chocolate from easter that has not been sold so he brought home over 5000 big Milka chocolate eggs (is Milka a thing internationaly? Idk, but it's one of the biggest chocolate brands here) and distributed them to everybody.
So now we have 250 chocolate eggs in the house (yes I counted them because I have no life right now, haha)
There go my weightloss plans...

I don't know in which country the person works, but here is Milka chocolat very popular! And it's just very delicious!

message 4547: by Bea (new)

Bea | 2050 comments That factory used to have a little shop were you could buy Milka chocolate in bulk (without fancy packaging) for ridiciously low prices.
Eventually Milka made them close the shop. Kind of understandable from their standpoint, but I and everybody else who used to buy there was still devastated xD
