Exactly right!! She's creepy.

I wonder why the guy at work didn't like it. He big into animal rights?
I've come across people that don't want to watch it or didn't like it because it's cruel to the cats. It's obviously cruel, it's awful, and these people are not painted in a good light by any means!!

Saar The Book owl | 3096 comments I have a rough couple of days behind my back...We had a new collegue since a couple of weeks now. We're working in a team of 6 people, but a couple of us (including me) had the feeling that there was something wrong with her. We had no connection with her, she was there, but 'not there'...And we've got a very responsible job. It's like she was 'off'. Then I've received a call on Monday from one of the collegue's saying that she committed suicide. She was only working 3 weeks here, but still it felt unreal. And on top of it all: the doctor tested her post mortem and she got corona, but didn't knew. Now we're asking to be tested, but our responsable says we can't! We work in a hospital at the reception desk. I mean, it's ridiculous!

Shae | 372 comments Oh Saar, that's so rough :-( I guess we can't always really tell what's going on for people, especially a new team member. A very sad shock for your team for sure.

Gosh, it seems crazy that your management won't facilitate you all getting tested! Can you ask anyone higher up to support your team with their request for testing? Do take good care of yourself :-)

Beena (beenz) | 2198 comments Oh god, that's horrible Saar! That is ridiculous, you definitely should be tested! Madness..

Saar The Book owl | 3096 comments Thanks everyone. I just can't get my head around it. We can talk about it in our team, but there's a lot of doubt about or responsable person of the team. She keeps saying we don't need to panic. Me and another collegue talked to someone of the staff, about our concerns, but so far nothing...One of our team members her husband is heart patiënt and her daughter has an auto - immuun disease, but the doctor refuses to get her tested. It's just crazy...

Did my functioning adult thing, for the year...

Filled out the 2020 US Census (5-10 minutes, mostly finding my mail & the ID number for the website)...

Did my Federal taxes (20-40 minutes, mostly checking for errors... I have a simple form)...

And my State taxes (10-20 minutes, mostly saved and auto-filled from previous years)

I procrastinate for weeks/months, every year, and then it's relatively painless to complete, just before the deadline :D

I've been hearing about things like this in the news... it seemed like they just wanted to assume all medical people interacting with corona patients just HAVE it...

In some places in the US, like New York, medical staff are staying in local (otherwise shutdown) hotels for free, to stop from spreading the virus further...

Not sure what the situation is, in Belgium...

Saar The Book owl | 3096 comments That's not what is happening here. Medical staff just go home and keep working, even if they have mild symptoms with precautions. Some nurses of retirement homes stay in the homes, but that just don't happen very often.
But me and my colleagues are not medical staff. We work at the reception desk of the hospital. just can't get my head around it. We suspect that she had mental issues. There were some in the past, but because we only knew her for 3 weeks, we don't know a lot. We can talk about it in our team, but there's a lot of doubt about or responsable person of the team. She keeps saying we don't need to panic and keeps other things for herself. Me and another collegue talked to someone of the staff, about our concerns, but so far nothing...One of our team members her husband is heart patiënt and her daughter has an auto - immuun disease, but the doctor refuses to get her tested. Before she committed suicide, she was caughing and short of breath and one of our colleague asked her if she had corona, with a joking undertone, but she denied. She got tested post mortem, so I think she didn't knew. There is no routine here, only if new people get admitted, they're testing them. Also nurses who work with quarantined patients, patients who are possibly infected...As a reception desk we get daily contact with patients, but because we're not care takers, we won't get tested. The confidence now in our team responsable is very low now. It's just crazy...

Thanks, Narilka, I'm trying not to panic.

I'm so sorry to hear that, Saar. Suicide is always hard to deal with, even if you did not know the person well.
I can only imagine how crazy it must be to work in a hospital right now

message 4414: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 3096 comments Thanks, Siobhan. It's difficult working now. We're asking to get tested, but the answer is still no. We lost our trust in our team responsible on handling things.

message 4416: by Bea (new)

Bea | 2050 comments Something fun and silly in these hard times:

I've set up a hardboiled egg tournament to keep my family entertained over the easter holdidays.
We have this family tradition that whenever somebody wants to eat a boiled, coloured egg, it must be cracked by smashing two eggs together.

Now I have made four groups of four eggs of the same color. In round one in each group a duo of same-colored eggs fights against each other. Round two, the two same-colored winners fight. Next, the blue winner against the purple winner and then comes the big finale.

Each family member makes a bet, what color the winning egg will have. The winner of the bet gets a cake baked by the losers. If the winner happens to be the cat (since there are only 3 humans in the family but 4 egg colors) she gets an extra treat :)

message 4417: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 3096 comments That's sounds like a lot of fun, Bea! Even the cat gets her share :)

message 4418: by Anya (new)

Anya | 58 comments @Bea, we have that tradition too. Not the tournament (which sounds super fun), but here in Serbia everyone does that - once the eggs are coloured, the only way to eat them is to battle it out by knocking them together. The winner takes the loser's cracked egg and eats it. If they want. They can pass it over if they are feeling generous :))

When I was a kid, I used to cheat by having another bird's egg, forgot which but much stronger than a chicken's, and I'd beat all other kids and take their eggs. I was a devil child...

message 4439: by Karishma (new)

Karishma (karishmanewar) | 1617 comments Sorry to be a downer.

But my depression is really hammering me down today. I don't know how to deal with the fact that during the whole lockdown people around me are improving their lives so much, losing weight, learning new hobbies, making innovative recipes, doing online courses, catching up with reading, reconnecting with friends and having a really good time even with the anxiety.

And I am doing things so slowly. I'm improving too, I'm studying, I'm improving eating habits, excercising, cooking but it's meh boring normal Indian food not fun Innovative food and definitely not pasta and pizza and pancakes, but I'm doing it all so slowly.

And my brain is telling me look you are always worthless and you will always be worthless.

Everywhere the messaging is (at least in India) that if in this lockdown you don't completely change your life around then the problem is with you, you are lazy. You want to ruin your life, otherwise in these days you have a unique opportunity to change your life and become a better person.

If in this lockdown you don't gain new skills and develop old hobbies then the problem is that you are lazy and incompetent.

All of this messaging is really really having a difficult impact on me especially today.

It just feels like even coping with the fact that my exams are indefinitely cancelled and job market has gone for a toss is difficult but then just everyone doing so much is even more stressful.

I know my situation is not as traumatic as most people's, I'm not going through something very difficult or many people have it way worse that me.

I just wanted to share because I'm just not feeling good even if I may be shallow in feeling this way.

Just because you think other people have it worse doesn't make your feelings any less valid. You are allowed to feel like shit even if you know objectively you have it ok. Depression doesn't care.

I'm really sorry that you're feeling this pressure. I just want to say that I think you're doing a great job - studying, improving eating habits, exercising, cooking - that's all really positve self care/self improvement, and it doesn't matter how slow you feel doing it. You're making changes at your own pace and that's all that matters. They are big acheivements! Don't let other people's acheivements belittle yours in any way. <3 <3

I read a post by Alaa Hijazi on exactly this only a few days ago (I put a copy of her post into the spoiler so my comment is not too long) and it's been shared and liked many thousand times so far. So you're not alone with your feelings, I think many people feel like that right now.

(view spoiler)

I really hate that our society is so obsessed with constant productivity and having to visibly improve all the time. It only gives people that constant feeling that they are not good enough. Just because you're making small steps that others don't immediately notice doesn't mean they are invalid, on the contrary! It's so important to listen to your own feelings and emotions and do what feels right for you. You are not worthless, you are good enough, just the way you are and your feelings matter! ❤

Sorry you're feeling down. Karishma. I'd take all the social media messages with a huge grain of salt. People's Instagram lives are rarely as polished and perfect as they'd like to have you think. The reality is more likely that most people are bored and unmotivated and going a bit stir crazy. I don't know how many fellow readers I've heard from who actually say they're reading less right now, myself included. Weird, but true. You just do what feels appropriate for you and your particular circumstance and if you don't come out of this lockdown a gourmet chef, it's still fine. I won't be one either. :-)

Sorry to hear you're feeling this way. Your feelings are always valid, as they are yours. It doesn't matter if other people have it worse or not; you feel how you feel.

Personally, I'm getting really tired of hearing all the 'we need to learn new stuff & be productive' narrative. It's just utter nonsense. You don't have to do anything; you don't have to learn a new skill, create healthy habits, or anything else. None of us should feel obliged to behave in such a way. Everyone should do what feels right to them, and it sucks that you feel pressured by society.

We all deal with this pandemic differently. The people feeling the need to reinvent themselves are probably people who can't stand the thought of not doing anything, which is also completely fine. But it doesn't mean everyone should behave that way.

All I can say is, you're not alone in the way you feel, and if you do come out of this pandemic without any new skills, you're still not alone in that either. And it definitely does not mean you're lazy or worthless.

To help you deal with your feelings, what's always helped for me is something I've learned during mindfulness therapy: you are not your feelings. You are not your thoughts. These things do not define who you are. They are changing states, and they will pass. Accept the feelings you have instead of fighting them (but not wallow in them), give yourself time to process them, and they will pass.

Sorry, this post got a bit longer than I intended to xD. Hope you're feeling better soon!

Saar The Book owl | 3096 comments @Karishma: sorry to read that you're feeling that way. Don't ignore your feelings or tell yorself that they aren't worth bothering, because they are. You do matter, Karishma! You are wonderful and important to anyone you know, but more certain to yourself. Don't look on what people are doing during this lockdown or after it, but make your own choices, listen to your inner voice telling that you matter, that you're beautiful and that you can be able to fullfil everything you want.
We don't need to learn new things or change our lifes. It feels like this stands for this pandemic, but it is all about how you deal with it, not looking on what other people do. It's not an obligation, just stand out from the crowd. If you want to relax with a book in your favorit chair instead of learning, let's say, knitting, well, then do that :) Take care of yourself. There's only one of you and that is important.
