Siobhan (poi5ongirl) | 8702 comments The UK has announced full lock down now and my anxiety is through the roof. My fiancé's company just messaged to say they're closed as of now, not to come in. I'm lucky enough to be working from home. But I need to go food shopping tomorrow and I'm just really fucking anxious.

Zaara | 4273 comments Sometimes its like bad wordplay, puns and Walking Dead jokes are all that's keeping us going...that and not feeding the fear.

The earliest scenes of supermarket madness were offputting. Surely taking all the loo paper and sanitizer is self-defeating, xcuz the only way you're safe really, is if everyone is washing their hands 😂
+ when people were buying irrational amts of things like sugar and batteries...

I'm hopeful the tide's turning in Europe now...Italy's reporting less (or at a lesser rate) day on day, I heard...and if we can break it's back there.......

Guess everyone's laid aside some staples now...I saw those videos of ppl cheering essential services workers...stay safe, ppl and extra ❤️ to Saar and Lambic.

@Margret: Lord of the Flies by William Golding

For everybody:
1. Museum visits for free (these double as more birthday gifts for @Melissa):
*These mostly in Europe:
https://www.demotivateur.fr/article/v...

*And these in the US (some redundancies between the lists, of course):

https://www.usatoday.com/story/travel...

https://robbreport.com/lifestyle/news...

https://www.cnbc.com/2020/03/19/coron...

2. And some Broadway musicals for free, if anyone's interested:

https://www.insider.com/stream-broadw...

3. Or (those inclined) can always start NanoWrimos early :) they're pretty active right now...

This is on the front page of Imgur right now, and it's hilarious... it's a collection of tweets being replied back to the conversation-starter, about how all these Work-From-Homers are learning what type of spouse they married, through their workplace persona, for the first time ever, because of all the conference calls going on (some have been married for decades):

Those are pretty funny :)

message 4359: by Shae (new)

Shae | 372 comments @Zaara - love the museum links, didn't know virtual tours were a thing, but with 2 teens home from school starting this week - very glad that they are :-)

@Ian - those Imgur comments are very amusing :-) My hubby's a builder and I run his office (as well as doing freelance bookkeeping work for a few other local small businesses). I guess our work personalities are not a surprise to one another - but one thing that always amazes me is how he can be so jokey and sweary with his crew on-site, yet, so incredibly polite and considerate with his clients at meetings.

The context appropriate behaviour does make sense, but the 2 different personas make my head spin a bit sometimes :-) I guess a lot of people are going to see a whole different side to their partners with many people now working from home!

message 4360: by idiffer (new)

idiffer | 765 comments Why are ppl surprised about different personas. "Masks" have been a thing since like forever. It's logical that a shitton of factors have influence on the way you talk in different situations.
I'm more patient and "to the point" with my clients than with my friends.

message 4361: by Shae (new)

Shae | 372 comments @idiffer - I think most people do understand that different situations require different sets of social skills :-) But most people only see their partners within the relationship/family context - so it can be a tad disconcerting seeing how they relate outside of that. Not a bad thing, or necessarily a big surprise - just different :-)

I'm in no hurry, happy to wait until a month when you have less scheduled? My June onwards is open.
But if there's a date that works for you and Kari earlier I will fit it in somehow. :)

Zaara | 4273 comments idiffer wrote: "Soooo... what about The magus? Weren't you supposed to start on the 9th of march?"

I DID begin on the 9th of March, I'm still reading 😝😜 and I think Jessica is too, I know she bought the book. We keep leaving each other messages about it and missing each other...truth told, I think we were both just feeling lazy/slumpy back then so we haven't progressed too far.

I went and read your review, btw Andy and enjoyed it very much...it's definitely a book you gave a lot of thought to...I remembered (during our NeverNight essaywriting binge) you telling me to watch out for the gf in the early parts of the book so I kinda paid attention...what abt the char did you want to talk about? Seemed to me more of a consequence of the language/tone of the book than anything in the char yet but I only read the first part so I dunno if the gf comes to Greece?? I'm keeping notes, once Jessica gets going I will post...actually I think I will go pull up her comment bank and see where we last talked abt it, we got scattered all over the place EXCEPT naughty books...hehehe!

Also, I didn't read the last portiom of your review because it seemed kinda analytical/superspoilery...I dunno why you think/feel you're socially awkward bcuz that was superarticulate. You should try being me for a day...😂 and get HIM to write the novel....😜

message 4379: by idiffer (last edited Apr 04, 2020 11:15PM) (new)

idiffer | 765 comments @Z

About the gf. I remember her arguements with the MC being not very logical. I'll need to reread to be sure.

For me the tone of the book is inseparable from how the characters ARE in reality. If a character speaks illogically, i can't just say "ohhh, it's not the char that is illogical, it's just that the author chose to write it this way".

Well, I'm not condoning leaving comments everywhere but the designated place for them. Cuz... see, I'm already out of the conversation, it seems.

I don't remember what I said where about being inarticulate, but at this moment I can say for sure that my written english/russian is way better than when I'm speaking, especially english since I don't practice speaking at all.

Me and Tammie really like Lady Sherlock... we read A Study in Scarlet Women last month, and are reading A Conspiracy in Belgravia right now in the Mystery Club... we invited you Follow You Home a few days ago, and we read it, but that one was really weird... we both liked it in the end (4 stars), but had many misgivings along the way...

Haha @Siobhan, now the hints are all too vague and extremely unclear but cutting thru the fog and obfuscation, it sounds like Kari may want an earlier start....😂😜
Near the end of this month ok with you guys?
Say 25th? That seems the earliest I could squeeze it in.

Re messages 4388 and 4389:

EDIT @Andy as long of course not...its because all the terrorists are depressed at being upstaged...😛😝 and the only ppl making money are Netflix...btw, I've been bingewatching the Office...the earlier seasons are hilarious...I'm just reaching the episodes where Carrell leaves the show...

2nd EDIT after ages....that show...when I watch those guys...it makes me feel real good in my self-esteem/"consciousness" of how socially awkward/dorky i am...
