I picked up an iPad awhile ago... I don't use it much... mostly got it so I can listen/watch Twitch streamers while doing something on my PC's whole monitor, and to run Discord voice chat, because I've had problems with my PC recognizing headphones in the USB extension cord (and my PC doesn't have a Bluetooth receiver)

It doesn't get much use because that kinda stuff gets in the way of audiobooks, and I don't usually need it for anything else... so I forgot I had it when I was setting up Apple's Two-Factor Authentication, which requires a 2nd Apple device to receive the code... oops

I considered buying a spare phone so I don't have to shop for a new one for a long while, even if the same battery problems crop up on this one in 2022-23, but decided against it, for now...

I don't know when GR added a comments button to the profile dropdown, but I only have 13-14,000 comments on the entire site... 10k here, 2-3k in GG&G, and the rest sprinkled around...

It's much easier to find for your own profile, since you just click your photo in the corner of any page and the button is near the bottom... after a little digging, I was able to find it for other people tho... scroll down to groups on a profile page, and there's a button that says "recent posts" which does the same thing... not just group posts, but status comments/etc... you have a little over 4000

what's everyone up to this weekend? My sister is coming over tonight and we're going to a pumpkin festival tomorrow after my son's hockey practice in the morning. It'll be nice because we've both been having a bit of a rough time lately, her with just some life uncertainties, myself with major family issues etc

message 4015: by Rob (last edited Oct 04, 2019 04:15PM) (new)

Rob (nefariasbredd) | 2418 comments Not much tonight. Get the kids to bed, maybe pick a new show to binge wth my wife, and read a bit more of A Little Hatred. Lots of health issues all around this week with my in-laws out of commission the early part and my wife's recurring medical conditions cropping up again. I took off today and we had to get a new toilet (emergency) and had a new dishwasher coming today as it was today already. So I"m glad I took off.

Tomorrow take the kids to soccer and then my in-laws take them for the rest of the day while my wife and I attend a co-worker's wedding.

Sunday - head to my folks for a delayed Rosh Hashanah/pre yom kipupr get together (everyone was sick last week) and see if my sister or brother in law have read the above book yet/watch football or baseball playoffs.

So quite hectic!

message 4016: by Shae (new)

Shae | 372 comments Gosh, sounds pretty hectic for everyone all round - we're getting ready for my brother in-law, his partner and their 5 children (ranging from 3 to 12) to come and stay with us for the school holidays - I love them all dearly, but am seriously keeping my fingers crossed for good weather so we can do fun 'outdoors' activities. Also, my 16 year old has just got her first ever boyfriend (I'm not really ready for this!) and she's very keen to introduce him to the whole family this week - poor boy, actually seems quite sweet and a bit shy, he has no idea what he's in for, lol :-)

Finally found a good iphone app for fast audiobook listening... it's called Greenlit Audiobook Player, and it goes up to 3x speed and has a setting to trim silences... only minor thing, is that the speed setting is a slide bar that is 80% 0.5x to 2x and 20% 2-3x, so the topend adjustments are rough... but it's great to finally find an app to go faster than 2x without clipping or hollow room sounds...

This should make a big difference with my next Michael Kramer book ;) (He's a pretty great narrator, but he reads slow... I could probably speed him up to 4x)

Note: it's a $3 app...

Yea... this felt like a final followup to those discussions where I asked about apps... but I didn't want to try and figure out where/when those discussions were... probably last year...

My new phone is on iOS 12 and iPhone 6S, and I updated the apps on there after I copied all the settings from my old phone... and Audible interacts with iTunes 10x worse than before... if I try to play a book from iTunes, the buttons don't work, and clicking anything just cycles the playback speeds from 0.75x/1x/1.25x/1.5x/2x/2.5x/3x... it's weird... so I needed a new app if I wanted to try speeding up my books more, again... Audible is great for books downloaded directly, tho...

message 4021: by Anni (new)

Anni | 5066 comments I don't have an iPhone, so I can't compare and also I tend to listen at 1.5x-1.75x speed normally, only going up to 2x speed for slow german narrators or some Worm audiobook chapter, cause they are really slow. But I do see why getting the right audiobook app is important. I actually have 8 different apps installed to listen to audiobooks and music, because I really need all of them 😂

I'm getting there, too, with iBooks, Audible, Hoopla, VoiceDream, and Kindle (for Kindle Unlimited Audio titles... altho that might have been a waste because they don't sound good with the built-in player), and now Greenlit

THANK YOU... the interapp interactions are weird... either it didn't work before because I downloaded the book directly into the Kindle app, or it's because I hadn't allowed Kindle permission to make notifications on my device, but when I downloaded the ebook of book 2 in the series, then switched over to the Audible app, the book was available for download from the Cloud... I only now, finally found the first book further down the list around when I added it to my Kindle app...

Only downside to this Greenlit app, is that it seems to drain my battery much faster than iBooks and Audible do... tradeoff for listening faster, I guess...

That way, If I'm finished I can jump into any that I fancy or schedule some last minute ones but I'm not under pressure. I've put way too much pressure on myself this year to the point where it's not always fun and I feel like I'm forcing myself to read.

I share your thoughts on this one. Allthough, most of them are interesting BR's, I don't like the feeling that I must/need to read. It can't be a task...

Virginie | 6109 comments Just learned that France v. England and New-Zealand v. Italy were canceled (Rugby World Cup).
Beyond the weirdness of having no contingency plans (a typhoon in Japan during the typhoon season? Who could have guessed? :O), I'm so sad to be deprived of the chance to witness:
1. The All-Blacks crushing yet another team (that's always fun)
2. A match against France's biggest rival on a world stage.

I get the concern for security, I really do... But it was the Crunch, damn it! :( :( :(

My college rugby team (I used to play on the wing or more I used to mauled by bigger players rather when I played on the wing) was playing a game close by to me (about an hour away today). My old housemate is coaching now but got too busy to go see them play. It would've been fun.

@Virginie: it's a really big typhoon. I've saw it on the news this evening. The heaviest in 60 years! But I understand your dissapointement ;)

message 4033: by Virginie (last edited Oct 13, 2019 01:08AM) (new)

Virginie | 6109 comments Oh yeah, I saw it on the news too. Scary :O
I totally understand why the games couldn't be played. Safety first!

To be honest, I'm more disappointed by the decision to cancel rather than report and/or move the game to another location. While such a big typhoon couldn't have been anticipated, the decision to hold such a big tournament in Japan in typhoon season meant alternatives should have been prepared in case of perturbations due to the weather. I don't understand the unwillingness to work around the weather.

There's also the disrespect to the Italian team by implying that their game being canceled doesn't matter 'cause they would have lost anyway, and the unfairness of having 3 teams (potentially more) being having a lot more rest & prep time.
The way I see it, my most anticipated game (and possibly my enjoyment of the rest of the cup) were axed not because of a typhoon, but by lousy organization, and that irks me.

Are you KIDDING me?!?... I just got a letter in the mail about a safety recall on a part of my car... this is the second recall in the 4 years I've had the car... what really galls me, is that the recall is on the part they used in the last recall... apparently the replacement passenger airbag inflater from the last recall is defective in high heat situations... the whole thing sounds similar to why they replaced the thing last time... to top it off, they don't even have parts ready to fix this yet, this was just a warning that soon I'll be able to take it in to a dealership for a free fix...

It's a definite tradeoff... ever since the front page changed to the new layout a year or 2 ago, I've just been unsatisfied with the front page anyway... it's so selective in what it shows... even when you tell it to show you things...
