Yup, currently they're still on the app but not the desk-top version.

Not surprising... every recent "improvement" to GR has removed features...

message 3703: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments Hopefully, that is a glitch. You can still make book updates but you have to click on the book and do it from there vs the update page.

A bunch of us gave copious feedback when GR "improved" the series page last summer, so you can only see 2 books at a time on-screen now, instead of 10-14 books... and again when they revamped the profile pages and stopped letting people befriend authors... made very little difference...

The GR trend seems to be bigger pictures, less words...

message 3705: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments ? Is this one the app? Is the change with authors recent?

I friended a couple of authors last year. The option to do it is still available on my end. You have to click on the down arrow for other options than "Follow" author. That seems to still work in the browser in desktop mode.

I don't use the app anymore. Easier to use a browser.

Yes to the author's one, I have done that too.

And Goodreads in desktop mode on the chrome app is way better than the app if using your phone.

Maybe I'm wrong about that one... or they reverted the change... I'm not in the habit of friending authors (most of the authors I'm friends with, I wasn't aware they were authors when I friended them, lol... I just met them in groups)... only author I can think of that I've talked with since reading their books, is Angela Verdenius, over in GG&G, and she only pops in occasionally, from what I've noticed... (and Graeme, here and in Urban Fixation -> Spells, Space, & Screams)

I really don't use many pages on GR, anymore... bulk ratings/reviews, and I have the notifications summary page as my homepage, for finding discussions to respond to...

Shaitarn | 2185 comments We're dogsitting a couple of dogs for a friend of ours for the next couple of days. Having to clear up after one of them when we took them for a walk earlier has done more to discourage me about getting a dog of our own than any discussion with my husband.

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments And that is why I have a cat yeah she’s lazy but at least I don’t need to worry about her making a mess

What are the odds that the street cats are meowing outside right now probably some territory stuff 😒😒😒

message 3711: by Shaitarn (new)

Shaitarn | 2185 comments I would love another cat, but my husband is a real cat hater... well, cat disliker, anyway.

I'm starting to think my suspicion that cats are better than dogs in every way is correct. Yes, they can be lazy and mercenary, but they don't look at you with huge begging eyes when you eat, or need walking, or whine for 15 minutes when their owner leaves!

message 3712: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments You should see my cat when we eat chicken we have a spare chair in our kitchen so our cat sits on it and looks at us occasionally she would lean on us or put her paws on the table until she had some chicken

Yeah we definitely spoilt our cat

I thought I was a cat person most of my life... then I got a dog. I found I’d much rather have something that does it’s business outside of my house lol.

message 3714: by Diana Stormblessed (new)

Diana Stormblessed (dashichka) | 5357 comments As both a dog and a cat owner, I am hands down a dog person. My dog spoons me to sleep. The love he gives me calms me down and keeps me grounded. (My other dog is crazy so I can take her or leave her). My cats are very social as well, but it's on their own time. They don't make me feel loved like my dog does. And with dogs, cats, and small kids, my life is surrounded by mess, so I'm used to it and that I don't mind at all.

Our cat actually never uses her cat toilett. She goes somewhere under the bushes at the back of the garden. Nobody goes there anyway, so it's okay :)

message 3717: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments @Anni I guess I’m lucky my cat only scratches the wallpaper off

Although it is funny to see her run to the door when the doorbell rings yesterday she opened one of the doors so she could get to the entrance (the door was lightly open but usually she waits for me or my family to open the door)

Is it just me, or is Goodreads taking forever to load today?

message 3719: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments So a few weeks ago I found out something really interesting.

So my dad was telling me how his dad was Indian with his mum being Pakistani making him half Indian

Then my mums mother was also Indian and her dad was Pakistani making her half Indian as well

Which means that along with being British and Pakistani I am also a quarter Indian (I hope that’s right)

Yes technically I would have been Indian anyway but I never knew it would be that recent which is kind of cool and probably explains a lot

The more you know am I right?

message 3720: by Charlie (new)

Charlie (charlieridley) | 5750 comments That's really cool Ahdam, I'd love to know more about my family history and where we all came from.

message 3721: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments I know I do want to take one of those dna tests to see how far back my heritage goes I’m assuming it would mainly be in the east but it would be interesting where

On a side note I made a start on my dissertation and I’m already 2000 words and I’m already worried about writing too much (its 8000 words)

message 3722: by [deleted user] (new)

I took one myself, and I was very surprised actually. I expected to be mostly German and Irish because of my surname and my mother's maiden name, but it turned out my Germanic and Irish heritage only made up a very small percentage of what I am. I was also almost 30% Iberian, which is old world Spain/Portugal, and I would have never in a million years thought I had Spanish ancestry considering I'm as pale as a ghost. Also, randomly I am 1% Nordic too (which seemed out of place since most of my DNA centered around Spain/Portugal, England, Ireland, Germany, and Greece.

message 3723: by [deleted user] (new)

Also, congrats on writing lot of your dissertation!

message 3724: by Charlie (new)

Charlie (charlieridley) | 5750 comments @Ahdam Congrats on your dissertation.

@Nelda That's a really cool mix! I'm guessing some Scottish somewhere due to my colouring ( very pale skinned redhead) but honestly I have no idea.

message 3725: by Shaitarn (new)

Shaitarn | 2185 comments @ Nelda Rae Maybe one of your Iberian ancestors took a shine to a brawny Viking in the past!

I would love to work out my ancestry sometime, but I'd be more interested in finding out who my ancestors were rather than my genealogical mix, if that makes any sense. If I ever had a year to do nothing else, I'd spend a lot of it digging through the old census records!

message 3726: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments Cheers guys I'm looking at south Asian representation in Hollywood which isn't too bad

@Nelda Pretty cool I'm assuming that 1% was some Viking doing some frolicking with one of your ancestors :) :)

@Shaitarn I would love to know my descendants but something tells me it would be a lot difficult for someone like me to find this kind of stuff. I'm not sure how india stores there census data.

Impressive, that must have been a lot of work!
Especially considering that several of the relations changed over time.

Shaitarn | 2185 comments Brief explanation: Robin Hobb was doing a postcard giveaway a while ago: send her a postcard, and she'd send you one back. I sent a postcard and got a nice card back as she'd run out of postcards.

I will post a picture once I have a new memory card for my camera (I'm the only person in the world who doesn't have a mobile) and have figured out the intricacies of GRs image system!

Has anyone ever gotten someone's car towed before?...

I almost did a few year's ago, but they moved their car when they saw me calling the tow number, I think...

Giving it another go today, tho... someone was parked in my assigned spot when i got home yesterday... forgot about it after being home 2hrs... then I went to work last night and noticed them STILL there and was pissed... got home this morning, and they were still in my spot, and another car was blocking the dumpster (which management has left notices about before and gave me an extension to call Monday thru Friday)... I called at 7:30 as suggested last month, and didn't get a callback or anything... 10am, I knocked on the neighbors most likely to be responsible, and got no answers, so I finally called the tow company on the sign warning people about these things...

Only slight worry is if the car owners try to retaliate... I feel like I've been more than accomodating, yesterday and in the past, as long as it doesn't turn into a multi-day thing... doesn't help that we still have that big snow buildup from the past 2 weeks... and to double the threat, I reported the car blocking the dumpster, since I was already calling to get my parking space cleared...

There's ample on-street parking space... it's where I've had to park when my spot is full, and the entire parking lot had to do it last year, for a couple days, while they repaved & retarred the lot...

message 3744: by Soo (new)

Soo (silverlyn) | 6898 comments If it's the same people, next time, take a photo of the car + license plate. Make sure time stamp is on the photo. Call your complex office and let them know what happened. Give them the car details & license plate #.

Make sure to notify the office each time it happens. All of the photos & office call in is to compile evidence of what is happening.

Go ahead and call the tow company. Tows cost money. Hopefully, they will stop doing it once you get them towed once.

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments So on the way home I thought it would be cool to watch a few cringe channel videos to see what they are like and I found this baby

https://youtu.be/B_86DuIkYIs

To give context this guy is part of the pick up artistry movement for those who don’t know it’s just men who have a lot of issues with women teaching other men tricks to get into a girls pants....yep

So this guy is pretty delusional it’s almost sad and yeah please watch at your own risk and don’t go further into it because it can go from funny to absolutely disgusting 😨😨😨😨
