Lol. I'll take more photos of it the next time I'm at my in-laws. Ended up buying two of the refurbs (one as a gift).

Diana Stormblessed (dashichka) | 5357 comments I haven't seen the new paperwhite but I have the old one and love it to itty bitty pieces. I know I'm spilled a little water on it before (Cuz yes I will read while brushing my teeth) and it's been fine.

Virginie, how was your time with your brother?

Virginie | 6109 comments Oh, I haven't seen him yet - thanks for asking.
I'm leaving for Paris on December 17th (until the end of the year); I'm both excited and worried (it'll be the first time I spend lots of time with his girlfriend, since he's working and she's still a student)

She seems really nice though; first time he's officially introducing a girl to the family :p

I've had my Paperwhite for awhile now... since I don't read from it like I used to, it gets used as a paperweight on my forklift at work... I'm probably going to need to buy a new one myself, sooner than later... for the past 6-9 months it's been struggling with connecting to my computer to manage uploading and downloading of material...

It instead enters this loop where it keeps entering and exiting USB mode every 1-2 seconds, with the backlight flashing off and on... only way to exit the loop is to disconnect from computer and hold the power button to force a reboot... and there's no guarantee it won't start looping again when I reconnect the USB cable to Kindle/computer... internet says the software is breaking down...

Clearly I'm too considerate... I didn't realize I could have been vacuuming near midnight in my apartment building... like my upstairs neighbor is right now...

I try to leave that kind of stuff for "normal" hours... instead of hours convenient to my work schedule (get home at 6am and start vacuuming before I sitdown and don't want to get back up :) )

message 3606: by Shae (new)

Shae | 372 comments @Iain - Oh that is a bit rough :-( Perhaps you need to ask Santa for some noise cancelling headphones for Christmas, or even better - a new upstairs neighbor!

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments Alright everyone

Tomorrow I will be producing my the first episode to my book podcast which is called the book basket podcast where I talk about a book to my mate (who isn't a book reader) and I will give him a few tasks related to the book and then discuss the book with him.

The book I will be talking about tomorrow will be Saga, Vol. 1

Now I have a few ideas for this episode but I kind of want to get you guys involved in it. Not as in having you join in via skype JUST yet but maybe get some comments from you guys about this graphic novel and your thoughts on it what did you think? so when I record it I can read off your guys thoughts as well as some reviews on the site.

I was wondering if anyone was interested maybe if the mods will allow me to create a folder where you guys can post your thoughts on each book/graphic novel etc. I've got the books planned and I'm hoping to work on it through Christmas with my mate via skype (We done a few episodes which were film related and today we used skype for the first time which was a success)

So anyone interested?

Hey Adham! To keep it fair to authors and promoters of other kinds, I think we need to keep a discussion thread in the Self Promotion Thread, but feel free to set up a thread there :)

Kathrine | 1249 comments So Spotify released the "Your 2018 in music" today. I absolutely love these stats and seeing what everyone else's been listening to. Here are some of my stats:

Top artist: Troye Sivan
Top song: Mystery of Love by Sufjan Stevens
Minutes listened: 147,427
Number of different songs listened to: 5,029
Top Genre: Soundtracks

I love that my top genre is Soundtracks. I listen to instrumental music while reading and it made me happy to see that Spotify has noticed hahaha

Anyone else checked their 2018 music stats?

So... mod titles...

Jenna is wielding Dragnipur, and Scott is a soul chained inside it... when did this happen? :)

Music: I really don't listen like I used to... for a couple years I listened to a bunch of dubstep / derivatives... which I always found funny, since I hated how people talked about the genre when I first learned of it... occasionally I listen to piano/violin instrumentals, like I've mentioned before... and most recently (past year or two) I've listened to a bunch of G-Eazy & NF...

But bunch is a very relative term... I probably listen to less than 10-20hrs of music per month... compared to ~200-300hrs audiobooks at 1.5x speed (so really closer to 300-400hrs of audiobooks)... this is a rough estimate, since I listened to 9000-12000 pages each month and assume audiobooks go at 30 pages/hr at 1x, 45 pages/hr at 1.5x... this is very shaky math, since narrators and material varies... still gives SOME idea of how much I listen to books these days, tho...

jess (nu6586) | 1729 comments Adham,

I love Saga!!

Saga’s first volume is what cemented my foray into graphic novels. It’s always described as a “space opera”. But at its basest elements, it is the story of a family and how they came together and fell apart across the fathom of space. There is war, sex with robots, soap operas, drugs, ghost babysitters and so much more. The humanity (even though they aren’t humans) is so damn relateable!

message 3626: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments @jess we’ve finished recording it today and I’m gonna have a go at editing it this weekend I’ll be creating a thread in the promotion thread once I’ve finished the first edit where I’ll tell you guys the book I’ll be talking about next week. But I pretty much enjoyed it for the reasons you have

Can’t wait for you guys to hear it.

The problem is, as I get caught up with more and more series, reading less just means I'm falling behind on everything...

Since 2013, my heaviest years have been 350-400 books, and my lightest have been 175-200 books... and I fell behind on a lot of series those years (2016/2017)

The Bird and the Sword

I consider it so, anyway... the author is a Christian author, and before this most of her work had a Christian leaning... in this case, I think the fantasy is Christian-inspired... but there don't seem to be any shelvings that explicitly agree with me...

You could argue that the Narnia books are Christian fantasy. I remember reading This Present Darkness years ago, when my parents were getting back into Christianity. I suspect it would make me wince a bit if I read it again now.

People often consider The Lord of the Rings as christian fantasy also.

message 3638: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments I’m a bit skeptical on that to be honest I know Tolkien and Lewis were friends and I think Lewis convinced Tolkien to be a christian but I think LOTR has more of a mythological and historical background it knight have some religious stuff

I remember watching a film called gods not dead 2 and it was pretty much about a teacher who has to fight the school board when she said Jesus in class and it was pretty terrible for a few reasons

message 3639: by Karishma (new)

Karishma (karishmanewar) | 1619 comments Narnia is supposed to be Christian allegory - I remember reading that Lewis wrote the same in his letters.

On the other hand Tolkien wrote in his letters that his work wasn't allegory.

message 3640: by Shaitarn (new)

Shaitarn | 2185 comments @ Ahdam - other way round; Tolkien convinced Lewis to return to Christianity.

I think if LotR does have any religious significance it's only because Tolkien himself was a Catholic and naturally his writing was influenced by his own beliefs. I think I read that Tolkien deliberately avoided putting any religion into his books.

And there is a campaign to have Tolkien recognised as a saint. I would support that purely for amusement.

Narnia started out as fantasy books that Lewis could read to his daughter/niece... but as he got going, people pointed out the Christian influences, and Lewis just started emphasizing them more and more as the series progressed, to their detriment... I found the last couple barely readable... the first couple are great, the first most of all... Charlie would agree... there was a series Buddy Read in October/November, and I'm the only one that made it to the end, out of sheer stubbornness... and because each book was about 3hrs long (at most) at 2x speed...

Kirsten (kmcripn) | 2 comments I like the Narnia books. Don't let the Christian thing throw. I can see how it's there but not overbearing.

The audiobooks are especially good as they're all narrated by a different famous British actor: Michael York, Lynn Redgrave, Kenneth Branagh, etc.

I saw it more in the creation myth at the start of the book... and this review on Amazon see's it in Lark's talk about words from the Creator, and their power...

But frankly, what I like about Amy Harmon is her light touch with the Christian themes... the book that stretched my credulity a bit was the Bonnie & Clyde one, Infinity + One... but Making Faces and her other books were great...

I also liked Bird & Sword purely as a fantasy novel, and I liked it more than the second book, The Queen and the Cure
