Also I have a nasty habit of going through comments and looking for arguments and when I see a book I’m interested in get 1 Star I don’t read the review I look at the comments

The king killer chronicles was definitely one where I got the popcorn out and watch the disagreement and anger takes its course

Haha, I like to do that as well.
I like reading negative reviews of KKC, even though I personally love this series. But I understand why some people don't and these discussions with hardcore fans can be very amusing.

Also I love reading negative reviews of books I didn't like. It only gets frustrating when a book is so popular that you really have to search for negative reviews.

message 3305: by idiffer (new)

idiffer | 765 comments I gave kingkiller chronicles 4 stars, but agree that the whole thing is a huge pile of ridiculous wish-fulfillment. And uhhh... the whole love subplot? Denna was her name? Such a bitch. Also agree with criticisms I've heard about the second book being meandering or whatnot.
I didn't write a review of the books, so here ya go))

I do the same thing. I love reading negative reviews. Even of books I liked. I find that negative reviews are more honest and less sugar coated than the positive reviews.

message 3308: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments Of course I look at reviews but i do enjoy the fighting in the comments

What phrase was it idiffer?

message 3309: by idiffer (new)

idiffer | 765 comments @Ahdam
"judgement snapshots"

PS. Agree with Diana. + a lot of the time ppl can't PROVE the good things about a book. You can quote good writing style, but you can't quote character and plot development. But when we talk about the negatives... ohhhh, examples are abound.
Also... I forgot what I was gonna say, so have a Twain quote:
"Fuckers in the franxx!!! Fuckers in the franxx!!!"

I kinda like them too... but they tend to start affecting how I feel/felt about the book... so it's got pros and cons...

idiffer | 765 comments PS. if you enjoy fighting in the comments, check out some reviews of the Quran or smth. iirc, the comments on emily may's review of it were hilarious.
Also, I think there was a POSITIVE review of mein kampf, that was fun too.

PPS. I wrote Quran with a capital letter to show my respect, btw.

Them five star Mein Kampf reviews are interesting... some seem like trolls, but others clearly enjoyed the book while disliking his later actions...

The funniest tho, was the commenter to the review that mentioned the Bible/Quran... tried to argue which book led to more deaths... like they'd never heard of the Crusades...

Zaara | 4273 comments Ahdam wrote: ""

For @Ahdam

What DON'T we like about our fave authors?
Ok sticking to fantasy and off the top of ym head....

1. Ok pls note I adore Mark Lawrence ok? I think the Broken Empire was sublime and elegant with the pathos...
a. But the emding of RQW was a horrific b@lls up where all the complex story threads were jezzt...sequentially dispatched one by one with ABSOLUTELY every char turning up at the last moment in a frenzied curtain call. It was like he just couldnt be stuffed anymore amd was all "ok goombye it ends now."
The series was fine for me until the second half of the last book.
Vomithate when authors do that. They think it doesn't show but it totally does.

B. Also ML's second books are the weakest...they tend to be journey books, heavy on the dialogue, char growth, setups for finale and LOTS OF black philosophies...all of which I extremely enjoy but I know many ppl find them slow. I dont mind slow. That's why I love series like MS&T and Robin Hobb (despite *yerking* the masochistic git FitzChivalry amd his endless attitudes of taking ever more pain and doormattery....

2. MJ Sullivan...yeah...
A. malaprop/anachronistic issues...where there is a sudden jarring note of modernity in his extremely medieval settings...the one I beat to death discussing was the name of the horse *snort* Chrysanthemum, and somewhere in Revelations he talked about spelunking...dialogue too a bit too modern for the setting.

And stuff like...
“Rumor has it I was both conceived and born on the same crate of pickles.”
See...a street urchin would never know or use the word "conceived"...it'd be better if he used the word "made" if he wanted to avoid being crude. If it were GRRM, he'd never have made that mistake. And he'd have gone crude bcuz life is crude on the streets. Nobody balks at saying the word "fukk" esp if they are doing the activity on a crate of pickles, no?

B. Also some other issues of naivete...but this I find endearing. My inner Editor Bitch from Past Life notes it but I grin bcuz my human side rules now.

Still, I love these boys, ok?? I will buy everything they write...first in ebook and THEN in physical paperback. C. Also Sullivan needs better covers, dude. I never got over the urine yellow Theft of Swords cover with the creepy photoshop dudes. Apparently there are hoods I DON'T like. Somehow they carried this theme all thru. But I am rambling away from actual authorial issues.

I'll repost if I can think of anything else. Wait....wait...Ahdam...I thought of something else immediately....

3. Sanderson (pls dont kill me, @all + pls go away Fibar you've heard this half dozen times already)
A. unnecessary capital letters in the middle of his sentences when he gives proper names to his magic.
B. And also unnecessary descriptions of ALL the miniscule steps performed in the magic. Why do we need to read half a page of Szeth Lashing and Half Lashing and Quarter Lashing hisself over a wall? Why not just say "Szeth lashed himself (no capital) over the wall?"
Story is not affected. And with the Pushing and Pulling.
And now WOR 60% (view spoiler)
Audiobookers won't even know how eyesore these sentences can get when they pile up into a block of text.
C. Also...(this one is not serious) why is there NOT more Dalinar in EVERYTHING? Bring that dude everywhere. He should be the new Hoid.

Finally I fully admit my hypocrisy before one and all. Bcuz when JK Rowling describes her magic with Capital Letters...I am enchanted. I love it! Somehow the Lashing, Pulling and Pushing grinds my gears, Ahdam...but the Vanishing, Banishing and Summoning doesn't. Filthy hypocrite, no?
😈

message 3323: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments I don’t know why but I feel like you turned my saying grind my gears into something dirty and I almost feel violated by that

Also I’m not really surprised your boss has you do that as you do seem the type who has difficulty with that no offence but it seems you need to develop thick skin and a spine not to tell them to piss of but to deal with these situations and I haven’t done this stuff so I can see why it would be difficult

Finally I get more snippets of who you are zaara your an English teacher and you work charity the picture is slowly becoming clear. Also I deduce that you have south Asian blood since you name is zaara by the way I’m interested do you have Indian blood by chance? I’m curious because you knew what my sisters name meant and your name is stemmed from those areas.

What I’m asking is are you from my ends (technically I’m of Pakistani descent but same difference)

Also I was not expecting that detail it’s gonna take me some time to get used to but I think I’m slowly getting used to your rambling even though you take my words and twist them in your own ways

message 3324: by Shaitarn (new)

Shaitarn | 2185 comments @ Zaara What sort of items are you selling to this woman? I'm curious because you said 'consumed' which led me to thinking it was some sort of food - I don't know if it's even legal to give food products back unless there's a problem with them. If 'you don't like it' then - tough shit!

Can your boss get a sign posted on the wall behind the counter, something like 'we regret refunds can only be given if an item is returned in the same state as it was sold'. If this wretched woman comes back point out the sign to her and politely inform her of this rule. You can polite and apologetic but explain that that's what the boss says... she can always take it up with him or her if she wants to, but she sounds like a chancer to me, so I don't think she will.

Shaitarn | 2185 comments My husband said something moronically stupid the other day. I mentioned something about making a birthday/Christmas present list (this is something we do every year: put down a dozen or so things we really want and choose a few to buy. That way whatever you get is something you want and a surprise as well) and he said "But no books, eh?"

I gawped at him, gobsmacked; he said "Well, you already have so many..." saw the look on my face (half Munch's Scream half Medusa) and shut up.

Admittedly he's been putting up shelves in the spare bedroom so I can fill them with books currently piled behind the TV, but even so!

My list currently has two DVDs on it and he's not my favourite person at the moment!

Hmmm...perhaps 'consumed' was a misappellation, @Shaitarn. Handcrafted items mostly. Some paper products, lots of pottery...glazed and unglazed, fabric...there's a beautiful flower (mainly rose) garden so there are some floral mists and paper products with pressed flowers and candles, soaps, incenses, pot pourri and the like...
Nah, things like...using most of the paper from a stationery set and returning the envelopes (bcuz who sends snail mail nowadays??) or returning a set of glazed tile coasters with couple missing...and she'll say they were cracked and chipped...
Returning pot pourri in a Glade bag...now that's just so fukkin lame, no?
😡
Not so much food.
Thanks for your comment...working on it.

I wouldn't mind so much if he didn't roll his eyes when he finds me playing computer games and refuse to buy me those as well!

And he wants some more Prussian or French soldiers for the Waterloo diorama he's been working on (he has thousands of tiny, tiny 1:72 scale figures) - do I say 'no, you have so many already!' and refuse to buy them? No, I do not! (Admittedly, I could spend about the same amount of money as it would take to fill a shelf with books on figures and probably not have enough to fill a shoebox, but the point still stands!)

Oh yeah, and congratulations - you're mobile, yay!

Shaitarn | 2185 comments @ Zaara Could you ensure someone else is in the shop at the same time as you are? Make sure they'll back you up beforehand and then when this woman comes in to return something, say "I'm really sorry, but our policy now is not to accept refunds unless they're in the same state as they were sold." if she complains, the other member of staff can agree that this is the case. I think once she knows she's been rumbled she'll back off.

I don't like confrontation either, but she's clearly taking the piss - I mean, who returns the envelopes from a stationary set or pot pourri for crying out loud?

Oh wow! Thankfully my wife and I are both major book nerds, so that's a bridge we've never had to cross. Although book storage was indeed an issue, which we remedied about 5 years ago by committing to Kindles. I know that's blasphemy to some people, but it gets rid of the storage impediment so that's just one less excuse to not buy more books! It's probably good that you can't see our monthly amazon bill...that company has GREATLY benefitted from our conversion to ebooks.
