Questions:
1. "placed criminals and terrorists of any crime on this planet and have erased there memories..." -- If the criminals' memories have been whiped, then why would they still have a criminal mindset on the new planet? Kinda goes against most nature vs. nurture research, no?
2. "planet earth but has retained the infrastructure/ technology from the 21st century..." -- If the second planet has 21st century technology, then how do they not know about the utopian planet? Seems like a conondrum, because if they're far enough apart to not be discoverable, then you've got a challenge explaining how the two main characters are able to meet. Maybe all space travel/research is controlled by the authoritarian regime?
3. "One of the people in that group is in charge of the second earth..." -- I'm curious what this guy's motivations are. If he's an antagonist, then it makes me wonder what he's getting out of control of the criminal planet; he's already living in utopia...so what else could he want? Most utopian sci-fi villains seem to be motivated by keeping utopian control...is that the thought here? Or is he trying to be altruistic but just not very good at it?

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments Thanks for the questions Andrew this really helps to model my world

1) that’s a good point and something I didn’t think about. But this could work in my favour instead of anarchy and destruction it’s oppresive and totalitarian and I think perhaps with the mindwipe it may be a select few retain there sadistic and psychopathic qualities from there previous lives. I think this idea of removing criminals kind of shows the elitist nature of the dystopian society almost like a class system. Overall instead of anarchy and destruction it’s authoritarian but a select few are still crazy of that makes sense.

2) another good point in my idea the utopian society is still hiding the fact there is another earth so they created technology (I’m leaning towards satellites outside the atmospheres which conceals the planet) but this has a knock on affect on the earth I’m still figuring that out

I agree it might be good if the dystopian society to be purposefully stunted with the technology as well as the dystopian government come up with lies and explain the dystopian world as a natural event like an eclipse. But something else to think about

3) I haven’t thought about the role of the big cheese of the second earth but thinking about it he could be integral in this coup maybe ruling this world has given him a new idea of the perfect society and wants to take control of the supposed utopia and turn it into his vision.

I think a point what I ant to hit on is the illusion of the perfect society and how perfection is impossible to attain as the first earth believes they have created this perfect society but have created lies and secrets to hide the ugly truth

Right now it doesn’t make much sense and it needs some work but thanks for the questions Andrew and I hope my answers were clear for you. 👍🏽👍🏽

Also one of my favourite youtuber have thought of hiring an editor to help with a big project and I offered my services

I probably won't get it but once can hope :) :) :)

message 3258: by Bill (new)

Bill | 2150 comments I just spent my morning plotting out the rest of my reads for this year so I can go into next year with as clean of a slate as I can. Can’t even think about next year yet.

For now, like Anni, I'm focused on using my increasingly open reading time to catch up on series I've left by the wayside in favor of Buddy Reads this year... next year will largely be ruled by the whims of the Master Buddy Read list, when the time comes, assuming the books I want to read are already on the schedule...

I'm doing what Bill's doing, only with less structure and planning lol. I kind of want to be zeroed out with current series so I can let my whims take me were they will in 2019 (which is incredibly different than my tactic this time last year, where I'd already had reads planned through August 2018 lol).

Ok but I’m really really gonna try to plan out my reads.. maybe

But the rest of this year I’m really just gonna work on my reading muscles cause for the first 9 months life just totally did me in!

The more plans you make, the more plans you break... that's what I learned in 2018... like you, I now just pull up the monthly BR list at the end of each month, and plan out my next couple weeks... but sometimes I miss the next book in a series I'm Buddy Reading, since I don't remember all the names of the books in it...

message 3270: by RuinEleint (new)

RuinEleint I have now started reading all the new releases I got and never opened. Should take me at least a month. Also I have a couple of leftover reading challenges. Next year my reading is going to focus on trimming the TBR (I always say that) new releases, and Buddy Reads.

I have stopped worrying about unfinished series. Far too many of those. I will get around to them when I get around to them. If I am leaving a series unfinished, it probably means that the opening book wasn't that good anyway.

I truly cannot imagine attempting that. If nothing else, either a Kindle sale or new releases would end up blowing the whole schedule.

Siobhan (poi5ongirl) | 8702 comments I wrote a list of some series I would like to get to next year, and some buddy reads came about. But nothing too busy. Just one a month. XD

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments Ok so I was watching some videos on YouTube, and I come across this video by this guy I enjoy watching.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMGBf...

I'm not gonna go to the original videos because I rather not have conspiracy theories recommended to me, but it seems like there are people who believe Australia doesn't exist and everyone who is from Australia is either an actor, or is confused and they've been used by the British government to hide the genocide of millions of criminals apparently. Sorry Angela, Zaara and my other Aussie friends, it seems your all actors used to spread the myth that is Australia.

Then again this might explain Zaara's randomness, perhaps she was sent by the government to brainwash all of us to submit to the ultimate cover up.....Nah Zaara would be too much to handle for them and she definitely has Asian blood, which would be a recipe for disaster. :) :) :)

Haha I'm pretty much exactly the same. I miss reading books on a whim so much!!! I'm determined to leave myself as open as I can next year. I have found that I enjoy buddy reads a lot more if they are a not planned too far in advance. So my intention for next year is to see just see what strikes my fancy as they come up rather than saying I'll join a specific read 6 month before it takes place.

message 3276: by Hailee (new)

Hailee | 2762 comments Timelord Iain wrote: "The more plans you make, the more plans you break..."

Absolutely true. I definitely found myself breaking more buddy reads the further into the year I got. Plans I made in December 2017 just didn't appeals as much in July 2018. I am definitely learning from my mistakes in that regard.

Haha, if I'm a full time under cover actor for the conspiracy that is the existence of Australia - I want better pay! 😋

@Margret

Some days at work are just a painful slog 😪

Biggest thing that works for me is to make the conscious choice to step outside the office and take a short walk during my lunch break. I need the sun and fresh air to feel alive!

Also, eating something really yummy but super nourishing for lunch helps too 😊

message 3281: by Ahdam (new)

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments @Shael yeah probably not with the British government your not

Also I only had a half day yesterday and after I had eaten I fell asleep which is probably due to laziness over the summer but I should get used to it as I get used to uni again

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments Well then if that’s a normal Russian I hate to see what would happen to me if was there for all I know the police would be on there way the minute I set foot there or one of those ladies see me

For real though I’m not really surprised since I just read a graphic novel which was a satire of Russia’s lord and saviour and I’m pretty sure they banned the graphic novel since they banned the film that was based off it

Did you see the John Oliver segment when he visited Moscow to do an interview with Edward Snowden, that guy that leaked NSA documents about illegal surveillance?...

John Oliver didn't get permission from HBO to go, Snowden was late for the interview, and the interview was taking place across the street from the Kremlin, I think... he was freaking out, but everything worked out...

Yeah, I saw that episode. Great explanation from snowden about the necessary risks of freedom + all around great series.

And yeah, apparently we don't care about criminals as long as they're not OUR criminals, lol.

Ahdam (snowlocke) | 2429 comments Ok I was sitting in my room thinking (like always) and a memory of a video popped in my head where Stephen king talked about lovecraft and I remember how he said he enjoyed a specific book but commented he can’t write a scene or setting at all

This got me thinking as I hear a lot of people say if you truly admire someone’s work they need to understand there limitations if that makes sense and I agree

So I’ve to see what issues people had with Sanderson and surprisingly there were a few stuff that I agreed with there I won’t say here at risk of spoilers but yeah it is eye opening

I’m not sure about creating a thread since I’m shy and lazy to ask but I would like to challenge everyone here to talk about there favourite authors....but instead of why they like him talk about what don’t you like about him if it’s his writing, story etc anything because I AM HERE TO READ SOME BOOKS AND CHEW BUBBLEGUM.......BUT I’M ALL OUT OF GUM

It's only worth it if you read/listen to at least 5 books a month on it. A lot of the good authors do not necessarily have books on there because Amazon doesn't pay authors well.

If you read a lot and enjoy unknown authors, you can get your money's worth from KU.

I bought the membership during Prime Day & got a discount for 2 years. I'm definitely getting my moneys worth but it takes effort because it's hard to find good books on there.

This month, I hit gold because a few authors I like have their books on there as a Read & Listen option. It's not always like that. A lot of the times, I end up reading so-so books just because I feel like I should since I paid for the service.

A lot of the books that end up on Kindle Unlimited go on sale for FREE or 0.99 cents. If you don't read a ton or fast, it's actually better to do a search & download the free books like once a week.

I have a crap ton of books on Kindle Cloud and most of them were freebies. I will probably only enjoy reading 15% of them.

I love George RR Martin's books but I think his weakness is his lack of creating an outline for his story so it started out strong and ended up lacking direction. The 4th book in ASOIAF was a fucking nightmare

idiffer | 765 comments I already linked my review of The Library at Mount Char in the BR thread. Or find it in my profile, I'm lazy.
Basically I gave the book five stars, but ppl were going away saying "If u didn't like the book why did you give it five stars???"

Also I five-starred The Sea of Tranquility, but there is a one-star review floating around, that I almost wholly agree with.
I'll be back if I find the review.

Oh, and my review of Nevernight might serve as well.

Hurray for PR, eh? But seriously, I'm not going to repeat what I said somewhere else already. Like and subscribe, muthafuckaaaasss
