Not THAT out of nowhere... Me, Laura, Manju, & Iniya started a Naughty Book Club thread a few weeks ago for reading romance... and Laura and Choko and others did the same for light Historical Romances / Feel Good Books...
@idiffer: some authors, regardless of gender, can be downright cringeworthy in their word choices...

Some glitch - I only now found out there is a page 59 to this discussion, and you guys gave examples of awfulness by female authors, so that happens. But speaking in tendencies, Keely's argument still holds probably, the guy HAS read a ton of fantasy of all kinds.

In fairness I was away from goodreads purposefully for a week so o didnโt even know there was a notification issue ๐๐๐

I read this forum thread/article several years ago about anatomically impossible actions in romance novels... pretty much anything to do with the cervix was the main topic... it stuck with me...

welllllllll.... technically the cervix isn't all thaaat far away from the "entrance" but I don't really think that mentioning it would get my fires going, But maybe that's because I've had two kids and everyone talks about that particular part way too much.

Different topic: are there people among you who know their way around London and could give me recommendations for book shops? Especially shops with a good fantasy selection, independent or second-hand bookstores would also be welcome :)

Well I've been there and I'm not sure if your from here or not but there are a good number of Waterstones outlets in London and I'm fairly certain there were a few independent bookstores when I was walking around the city as well

No, I'm not from the UK but I'm planning a trip to London this summer, that's why I am asking.
No, I'm not from the UK but I'm planning a trip to London this summer, that's why I am asking.I'm aware of Waterstones, I meant smaller bookshops not everybody knows about.
I visited London and went to a lot of the bookshops on Charing Cross Road. A lot of those were older books and such, so not sure if they would have what you're looking for.

The best Waterstones in London is their flagship (I think) store on Regent's Street near Green Park; their fantasy section is on the first floor (second floor, if you're American). There's also another indie bookshop on Regent's Street (sorry, can't remember the name offhand).

There's also another indie bookshop on Regent's Street (sorry, can't remember the name offhand). Sadly a lot of places on Charing Cross Road have closed, but you still have Foyles, and on the other side a small second-hand place: Any Amount of Books. The fantasy section is tiny, but if you're lucky you might find something worth picking up for a couple of quid.
There's also Henry Pordes Books, but they're a bit snobby and expensive, so fantasy might be 'beneath them'.
Of course Forbidden Planet is in Shaftsbury Avenue.
When are you making your trip? I'm heading down south in a couple of weeks (family birthday) and will be sure to look out for any new places to recommend!
Oh no, when did all of the Charing Cross places close? I was there a couple of years ago and loved that street for all of the bookshops.

Thanks, I'll check those out! :)
Thanks, I'll check those out! :)I love bookshops, but the problem is that I read most of my books in english and the selection of english books you can get in bookshops here in Germany is pretty bad (at least in my town). The next bigger town does have an english bookshop, but it's very small and expensive. If you're searching for fantasy books that don't happen to be the latest YA-blockbusters or are not generally that well known it's practically impossible to find those in store. So I usually buy my books online but that's just not the same as shopping in a bookshop :)
I'll be going in August and I'm very excited. London has so many great places to visit!

Tell me about it... I had to go and buy some spray a few weeks ago, because I couldn't leave my apartment at night... there were like 100 moths swarming my porchlight, and 1-2 would squeeze through the cracks and end up between my screen door and regular door... was annoying... I sprayed around once and there hasn't been a problem since...

C.P. wrote: "Oh no, when did all of the Charing Cross places close? And Bookends, where I spent the odd Saturday afternoon.
I'm afraid they all went a few years ago - they were killed off by the online book trade (one of them, a shop that had been there since the 1920s, had a mock 'blue plague' in the window that squarely blamed the internet for their demise). There's still a few bookshops along the street ( hope - I haven't been down for several months), but they're mostly antiquarian high-end shops.
An update from a person you forgot existed, lol.
An update from a person you forgot existed, lol.So after 3 months of waiting I finally got my invalid pension approved by the government. It's small (around 150$), but I'm in the lowest (3rd) group of invalids. So I got 450$ in one payment for the three months that they made me wait.
BUTT I was told that there would be a small bonus for me cause I don't officially work anywhere. So I go to get that sorted, and to my surprise they say that the sum total of my pension + bonus will be 300$. And even in moscow I can live off that money, especially with some income from my unofficial bookselling business.
So now I gotta wait till the beginning of august, and then I'll get 4 moths worth of bonuses - 800$ in one payment. Woohoo!
Also they gave a card so I can ride public transport for free, which is mega awesome for me.
Congrats idiffer itโs nice to see you might be doing well with the pensions Iโve met a lot of people who really struggle to get by with there pension in my previous job here so itโs nice to see someone in that position looking on the bright side

Since I work on a shared machine and actively post on all the book threads....i usually have the book essays pre-typed. Then I chk the Random Chat and Vent threads coupel times a week. Also I check the people I talk to. The people I talk to most often, I follow or check on most often. Duh...goes to follow!
I guess this is the same for everyone.
Some others I chk couple times a week. This gives the cunning and fearsome i pressiom that you miss nothing, but actually saves you lot of time checking very few threads, posting and being online generally.
May not work for everyone and actually my machine skills are pretty deplorable but still...my account sux and blows but I still use it in this way...
EDIT: ๐๐ at peruse...can you tell the brother has been reading Regency lately?

Voila!
In view humble vaudevillian veteran, cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate.
This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi now vacant, vanished.
However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified, and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin, vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition.
The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta, held as a votive not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous.
Verily this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that its my very good honour to meet you and you may call meV Iain
