I just pick a shirt/team color and yell them out anytime someone asks me who I support, or there is a sports game on in the break room at work... I'm oblivious to sports... altho I've read some books with sports in them...

message 2804: by Zaara (new)

Zaara | 4273 comments Haha @Abster...while I appreciaet the Harry Potter curveball, truly I do....I see what you really want, is that you are totally craving soccer talk...and...uh...you chose me? Are you confusing me with my brother, the gorilla maniac soccer fan?

Flattered of course, taaaa daaaahlin' but if I talk much about this I would quickly expose my gaping ignorance + bore you to death. See...gone are the dim yesterdays when I ran with an uncoutf crowd who used to maniacally support Arsenal. Nowadays the closest I come to televised sports is supplying my boys with bucketloads of beer + catrloads of salty snacks and gently patting them on the head before closing the door on all the whooping testosterone and heading for a night out with my gals.

But I do admit it will be a refreshing change if them Latinos don't jezzt lift the cup like the entire tournament was a mere formality...otherwise I'm strictly neutral.
So I will just join you (and Siobhan and Shai and Hailee) and cheer for England...
But ONLY bcuz the Netherlands isn't playing 😉😉

Meanwhile I suppose you must be bug-eyed from the lack of sleep? Staying up to watch every minute of every match? I wish I could indulge you with much detailed sports talk with all the creepy statistics and stadium lore...but the truht is that all the hardcore soccer fans will not now be *snort* on Goodreads. Not that the two species are mutually exclusive but (generally speaking) you would find them either in front of their TV sets or rabidly surfing the sports forums. So you should take your chat craving to those places and make it purrrrrrrr....

And ooo look, another phantastically ugly picture! Dontcha jezzt love it when @Ab gets totally charged up and goes random? The best one was that surgebind thing on the Obscurity thread. For the longest time I didn't even know what it meant...and then I read WoK and I was all 😂😂😂 this boy will bring my white hairs tottering to the grave...

(view spoiler)

Same here. But, as I work in the construction field, I hear 'football talk' all day long. I work in Monaco so there's supporters of Italy, France and Portugal (most of our workers are Portuguese). Lunch conversations are scary :o

I don't tend to do that many Br's because I'm in too many challenges. I mainly keep it to one group. The only sport I really care about is baseball and I watch some reality tv. I tend to read instead of watching tv.

Because Goodreads is pushing book covers, book blurbs, and ads... we've been complaining in the Feedback group/thread, but people that don't read books with 5/10/20/30/40/50+ books or 200+ comics seem to like the layout... the "focus group"... those of us that read long series aren't happy... better off doing a book search with series & author name in the top bar... at least then you can see more at once, again...

I used to shelve my books by series/author... I shifted to genre when I broke 100 shelves and it became multiple pages...

I was at work today, stocking in the pillow aisle, and found this pallet of kids shaped pillows and throw blanket set... it had all these innocent shapes, like rainbows and cars and cupcakes and trucks and spaceships... and this really suggestive pink castle tower with a golden roof... it even had smaller castle-y buildings on either side of the main tower, making it worse.................................

And that's why old Disney movies are Dens of Iniquity... from the penis on the Little Mermaid cover (tower in background)... to the word SEX in the clouds in the Lion King, when Simba is communing with his father... to the subliminal "Take off your cloths" in Aladdin (dunno when that happens)... and the split-second porno in a background window of The Rescuers when the Albatross is running down the rooftop to take off...

Lol what Lena said.

It has to make sense for the story for me, either by building character or advancing plot (or even creating an atmosphere). I haven't come across too many authors who throw it in just for kicks and giggles.

message 2837: by Bea (last edited Jun 18, 2018 02:10PM) (new)

Bea | 2050 comments It usually doesn't bother me if it's well-written and not totally cheesy (in the end it's something normal, so why should it not be included in fantasy?)
However I don't like overly explicit scenes because that's just not what I read fantasy for :)

I'm kinda hoping that Germany doesn't get to far in the Worldcup because my neighbourhood went totally crazy with partying the last time and I don't need that again (I've got exams in July...). So I was actually quite pleased with the fiasco against Mexico (sometimes I'm a wicked person :p)
Still rooting for Iceland though

message 2838: by Anni (new)

Anni | 5066 comments For me it depends... I can't stand cheesy sex scenes with lots of paraphases. For example the Outlander series were just cringe worthy and eye rolling for me.
But I won't complain if it's well written and suits the story.
I also like the the sex scenes in Abercrombie's books, they aren't erotic at all, maybe a little more realistic and very funny :)

message 2839: by Timelord Iain, Tech Support (new)

I'm fine with it, but I'm sure a lot of it comes down to whether or not you already willingly read genres where it's more common/expected...

idiffer | 765 comments @Shaitarn

you should read some Keely reviews here on GR. Great fantasy reviewer - very smart. He says sex in fantasy by male authors is a problem most of the time cause the authors just let loose all their fantasies warped by nerddom, geekyness, what have you. + they don't know how to write a proper sex scene from a more technical point of view either. I recently read smth like "she impaled herself on his manlihood". I cringed.
But personally I don't notice it most of the time. Or I haven't read that much fantasy. Generally I like a hot sex scene (hint: I read romance novels).
