1. Content- try to focus on something you like and know well and books are really good since you can’t talk to them about anything Andy there’s an audience for the content
2. Equipment- if you want videos you need the right stuff and for books I would say you would need a camera and a microphone since these are most important
Camera- now the camera will help a lot you can use your phone if you want but I would recommend a camera and it doesn’t matter what camera you get as long as you can shoot videos at 1920x1080 29.97 FPS (since you Americans love decimal points so much) and of course mp4 video
Now from experience when you look for camera it is honestly the most confusing thing ever since you don’t want to waste a lot of money on a crappy camera and I decided to go for a camera I got for cheap and you k ow what I learned.....IT DOESNT FUCKING MATTER as long as you k ow how to use a camera it’s fine you can even use your phone if you want
However what is important is sound as audiences can watch a video with bad video if the sound is good but it doesnt work the other way around and if you decide to record with a camera DO NOT USE THE IN BUILT MIC BECAUSE IT IS HORRIBLE I think the best thing to do for now is get a cheap lav mic which are small microphones that attach to your shirt and talk into like in interviews you can plug into your phone as I found one that can do that on Amazon which I hope to use soon
You can have a tripod if you want to put your camera on and if you want more camera specifics send me a message because I could go on
3. Commitment- why do you want to do it Niki for fame or for passion because if you truly love it then you won’t care what others think and continue to make videos even if they don’t reach 10 views or so and trust me YouTube has some commitment and I don’t mean to scare you but I’ve been watching YouTube for 12 years and I’ve seen people devote so much time for it
There’s probably more but I’ll stop there I hope o didn’t scare you hahaha

I’m rambling but I hope this makes sense
Haha no not scared, thanks for the awesome advice!! Especially regarding equipment. My husband has all the bells and whistles I can probably steal to film (including studio lighting equipment and a tripod).
It sounds like we're in the same boat of desire but lack of time lol.
I think my biggest hurdle is a mental one. Intimidation: I think having all the professional setup is making me feel like I won't be able to deliver on that caliber, so I might start with just an iPhone for the first few videos just because it's quick and I can film before I talk myself out of it. And self consciousness: I'm kind of awkward and weird, especially on film, but as I watch other youtubers i think that individuality is actually what I like most about them. I've had that glam wedding photo up so long that it feels vulnerable to put my real everyday self out there. I just need to get over it. I don't really want the people who follow for superficial reasons, anyway. Still, it feels like lowering a shield.
My motivation is my passion for books and I think it will be a challenging and fun experience to talk about them on a different platform. If I start it, I'm in for the long haul (which is probably another reason I haven't started lol). I've managed to keep my blog running without hiatus since 2012, so I'm not worried about the commitment.

It makes total sense. :) what would your channel focus on (like, what would your angle on filmmaking be)? I've been trying to percolate how I can make mine a little different.

Awkwardness is normal I’m an introvert and honestly your not alone since that is just your brain reacting to the situation as at the end of the day you are talking to a camera and that shyness creeps in voice actors have that issue and they don’t emote well and you hear it but the more you do it and the better you sound and less monotone you will be and you have a lot to talk about are you a good speaker? Cos The best thing you can do is structure your videos accordingly beginning middle and end you can write a script of what you will say but you may run into the trouble of limiting yourself so think how to structure it would be good and all o have to say is we live in the 21st century you want to make videos.....do it
Also for me o want to focus on not just filmmaking but stories in general since I love a good story and I’ve seen different types varying from art films social realist Hollywood and I still need to explore more but I want to have a go and talk about films books and video games in my channel relating to story and also talk about filmmaking maybe post some videos or short films I plan on doing if I ever get to them
Now I’m tempted to show you guys a short film I did this year which could have been a lot better but was proud to make since it was my first film and I think I proved I am able to shoot and edit stuff so yeah
Ahdam wrote: "I totally get that and I still need to learn lighting (my first short film the lighting was bland af) but as long as we can see you then it should be fine all I would get is a camera microphone and..."
Generally I'm not a good speaker for something uncandid like this, but I do find it a lot easier to talk books over everything else because my blog has helped me formulate structured reviews.
That's a cool angle - It will give an audience a look into your unique perspective on things and filter it through your filmmaker's eye. Nice!
I think we both need to get more comfortable sharing the things. I'd say go for it! :)

Sooo... I have a YouTube channel, but I've not posted for over a year. It wasn't a BookTube channel, but a beauty one (skin care). I have been playing around with ideas to revive it and include books and book reviews.

Also other advice try to think how to shoot you video since it is easy to fall into the trap of filming yourself up against walls and it can be pretty boring and isolated to look at so a bookcase might help but this is a preference as I see a lot of book tubers do it and I might do it for mine mainly due to space and having a small bookcase
Overall don’t feel constricted and try to experiment as some of my favourite youtubers try and do something different in each video obviously you don’t have to follow this but yeah

Looked up bullet journaling. I used to do that with notes on an actual wall calender, but it turned out to be too tiresome. Now I just make lists of the book buyers and sellers I need to visit the next day. Everything else stays in my head perfectly, but I'm not exactly the busiest person alive, lol. I'm very free most of the time.
Have u written a full book yet? The members creatios thread is waiting for u))
With my passions it's not so clear cut. I struggle to call anything I do a passion. For example I edit russian fan translations of japanese light novels. BUT I hate these novels, they are shittier than YA. I can't say I outright enjoy doing it 100%, it's "work" more like, though I'm not getting paid exactly. Half a year ago my translator finished the project I was editing, so here I am waiting for her to start a new one, meanwhile I'm not editing anything, though I have a million potential projects (all of which are below the quality standards I have for translations). So how much of a passion is this?
I sell books, I enjoy doing it, especially filling out my excel catalogue. But I don't think it's a passion, because it's not that creative and it's tied to money, which isn't a worthwile goal in my opinion. And the buyers, GOD, the buyers, they're the most irresponsible ppl I've ever come across. Some just disappear, and I'm always left angry at them.
Before, I thought translating was my passion, but after a few years I got bored and switched to editing.
I think my truest passion was skateboarding, I did it for 8-9 years, but my smoking habit killed the opportunity to continue.
I thought a new passion was writing book reviews, but for a long time there haven't been any books that make me want to say something about them. It makes me sad, but I can't write a review for just any book, so again - how much of a passion is that?
I'm not even passionate about reading anymore, cause it's so hard to find a five star book.

Just soaking this all up here :) I love how practical the discussions get here sometimes. So much knowledge shared

THANK YOU ALL OF YOU GUYS.
Sorry for the late reply. April has been busy. ;D
I know people always talk about book cover buys, but I find I get pulled into book names too. Anyone else here get tempted to buy books because the name just sounds so good?... no... just me? lol ok.
One the other hand, every book I've purchased because of this has turned out great for me, so maybe it's a good system after all.

C.P. wrote: "I am the same way. I don't know that I have ever bought a book because of the title (or cover) but I have read a lot of books because of their titles."
Well I usually buy my books discounted, so at $1-3, I'm usually like "oooh, well that title sounds enticing!" Then into my basket it goes.

Or there are those that feel like naming there stuff something stupid like attack of the killer bikini babes from the planet zavirok and you can’t help but laugh at it and put it away
I’ve gone off topic but you get the point

I get sucked into the name more than the cover, mostly cuz I read on kindle or audio so I rarely actually even see the cover. But I've def reads books based on name alone.
I somehow keep missing that this thread updates. I wonder if I'm not subscribed to comments lol.

I remember seeing Sufficiently Advanced Magic and thinking "just sufficiently? Sufficiently advanced?" and I immediately needed to read it. LOVED it.
So of course I'm excited for my latest title buy: Too Like the Lightning. That just sounds so vague but beautiful to me.

Oh, I like both of those titles.

Bullet journaling started out as a novelty for me, but it has slowly evolved into my favorite project. The possibilities are endless. I wouldn't call myself a super busy person, but if I can write it down then I don't have to waste energy thinking about it.
I've written the first draft of a full book, and most of another, but they're a loooong way off from anything I'd consider presenting. I love the member creations thread idea - I keep meaning to find something to post there. :) I love seeing what everyone is doing (your graphic design stuff is really cool).
I'm one of those people who lives in extremes, so basically anything I'm currently enjoying has the ability to become an obsession or a passion. I also am pretty active online and the passion description is part of the "schtick" (I've no idea how to spell that so hopefully you get the idea what I'm trying to say). So I've had a few years to really narrow down what makes me tick through various conversations.
Even if none of those things are strictly a passion, it's cool to see the types of things you've been doing. All of them sound really interesting - especially the book selling/catalogue creation. :) Did you ever skateboard for competition or just do it for fun?

I think this is where Scott commented on hitting 5000 comments back in February... well... I have 4000 comments now... I think I talk too much... apparently Niki broke 4000 in the past few days as well, since she's at 4043 right now... I'm comin' for you Niki...

Jk you're totally going to pass my by the weekend, I've no doubt.

I think I had like 2300 comments at the time... I'll probably pass you by August/September at around 6000-6500 comments... it's all the Buddy Reads... I haven't gotten into too many lengthy discussions in a single day in over a month, I don't think..

I do!
I sold some books today and it felt so good! Selling books that disappointed me is so cathartic. Bye Shades of Magic trilogy, and station Eleven, and The Door..... Yay space on my shelves!!!

My secrets don't help other people... I'm a single hermit... kids and other social activities cut into your reading time...
I listen to books at work, and focus on activities I can listen to books while doing at home... and when I'm in the mood, I refresh the Goodreads notification page way too much to see if people have responded to my comments...

I guess that would do it. I wish I had a job that I could read/listen to books all the time.

It's gonna suck if/when I ever end up in a job where I CAN'T listen to all these books like I do now...

If you dont mind answering what's your job? I tried listening audiobooks at work but even though I mostly read by audiobooks I can't focus 2 things at once at work (English is not my native language too). I can listen when I'm on public transportation or walking to somewhere so at least I got that going for me :) Maybe I need more practice I don't know, but realizing that I've didn't understand last 1min and rewinding all the time doesn't help much :)

I'm to vote your first collab videos name.
1 for Fifty shades of Sanderson :)

I work in a warehouse / bulk merchandise store... where you buy 45 rolls of toiler paper instead of 6-12, etc... so all the produce comes on pallets and we swap them around with a forklift... so I spend my nights dropped these products from overhead storage racks for swapping or hand stacking onto shelves (low quantity items like paper tower dispensers for businesses)...
There's a level of multi-tasking required, but otherwise, my job is kind of mindless... I get 5-6hrs of listening done in an 8hr shift... with increased listening speed that's 8-12hrs of audiobook completed...

Nope, only skated for fun. But I wasn't good enough for competitions anyway. I knew some cool tricks but could only do them on flatground. I couldn't grind or drop down a set of stairs, as they do in the cool vids. + I wasn't that consistent. The kids who win SKATE flatground competitions can do a trick 10 out of 10 times. Me? 5 out of ten. Maybe.
My question: how do you get good at crazy skating tricks without killing yourself, or having bones sticking out of your body?...
I can't watch them shows that compile skating accidents and the like, but I've unavoidably seen a couple over the years...

Well I want a mindless job now :) My job involves a lot of sitting by the computer and also some people management, don't get me wrong I love my job but also I envy you too :)

Dunno myself. One time I tried to master a short gap in a skatepark - in 30 min I was barely walking, having killed my legs in various places.
Probably like them prodigies in the books we read... where they just kinda KNOW how to do things others can't...
